wow. the edges in the watercolour give it so much character. ive always been trying hard to blend to get complete smoothness but seeing this, its beautiful. i hope to reach a confident, personal style like this one day

Beautiful painting! That struggle when your paper is just working against you is too real. I have a watercolour sketchbook in which the paper just wont grab onto the paint, it just keeps slipping and sliding around on the surface! I think many beginners make the mistake that being able to lift your paint is a good thing, and I used to think that, too. But the ability to layer makes it actually easier and less frustrating. Little mistakes can almost always be fixed later with a bit of gouache or coloured pencil as you showed here :) .

Ms. Bruckner-you have SUCH an eye for portraiture!! I am sincerely drawn to your style of watercolor work--using the colored pencils atop the painting…it creates such a luminous and glowing appearance…🕯🥰 I have struggled with using more than one medium in my paintings-which is so frustrating because I adore the appearance of this style, once complete. Has anyone else reading this comment had difficulty with this, conceptually? As if somehow you were “cheating” or not truly a watercolorist, maybe doing “impure” work? It’s so ridiculous to me-ESP because I’m as far from a professional artist as anyone can be! As in, who am I to think I need to be a “purist” ( whatever that even means!) to watercolor, when people like this phenomenal artist Lioba, who is 10xx more talented than I am has no problem with this! I still struggle with the idea nonetheless😔 If you have experienced this, please let me know how you overcame this silly hang up?! Ps-I enjoyed your video so much, I decided to rewatch from my channel account in order to comment and give you a second like (after watching from my personal account)! Thank you for sharing your work with us on YT-it’s extremely helpful for those of us new to the world of watercolor and portraiture!!! God Bless you!!

OHHH I'm so excited THANK YOU SO MUCH for recommending Ali Cavanaugh! Gonna go explore her art now :D I also love how you described how you view your art as you work on it, especially the glass metaphor describes what I like about your and other artist's works so well! I wasn't good at describing what made me appreciate them so much and it's like you took the words out of my heart haha :D And of course, lovely piece again! Thank you for your tips! :)

I love the gentle easy way you work with water color. I have found portraits to be very difficult. Using layers like you have done, help to create stunning lifelike images. what paper is it that you use most generally?

addendum: if you are not using a proper water colour paper *designed* for water colour, or are an intermediate water colour artist working on a premium grade bristol or illustration board, you will never achieve results you will be happy with.

I bought some water colour paper from walmart but it always buckles. If i only wipe the paper once with water it dries right up. If i put two layers of water the paper warps. What paper do you suggest?
