Since I got back into the hobby back in mid 2019, I have been searching high and low for this locomotive, and I finally found it! That only took two years. Lol I hope you guys enjoy this unboxing and quick running session of my dream locomotive!

Congratulations. It’s one of Lionel’s best locomotives EVER. I have both generations and prefer this one, the first version. Enjoy your new toy!

FYI Roman The Bigboy, 844, as well as the 3985 challenger all wear the same Hancock long bell 3 chime whistle. So they SHOULD all sound the same. If you listen to different videos, they do. There are minor variations depending on steam pressure, whistle wear etc. IMO, the particular recording of a Hancock whistle Lionel sampled for this locomotive sounds a bit more raspy and flat than the prototype. Almost as if the whistle was iced up on recording day or something to that effect. Having said that. First gen Legacy locos are indeed some of Lionels best. Enjoy your find!!!! On a side note, heres a tech tip. If this is N O.S, these engines came equipped with a 6ohm rersistor in the smoke unit which taxes the regulator and causes it to fail over time. Lionel recommended changing the resistor to an 8 ohm to prevent this.

Lol I’m aware they all wear the same ones in real life and I’m also aware of the different steam pressures but me personally I have listened closely to all three in many videos and I can hear the differences between them. Yes they all do sound very similar but I can hear the slight difference in pitch. I work as audio engineer so I know I’m not crazy lol but non the less my little rant was about the models not the real life engines. I just personally like having my models with different sound files, which is why I got this model in particular and also the 2010 run of the vision line challengers. But none the less thank you for watching and for your comment, I totally agree with you about the early legacy models. There’s something special about them and those are definitely ones I’ve been adding to my collection recently. And thank you for the tech tip too! I’ll definitely look into that since I don’t plan on getting rid of this engine at all lol. Thanks again!

There a show called trains unlimited. That showed 844 helping a stalled freight train.One of its locomotive broke down.I have the MTH railing 844 in the greyhound paint scheme. Looks cool pulling freight.

Super video here great engine .. love this engine 844 and challenger 3985 are super cool looking in person... this model is a great scale replication.... love the sounds .. Bravissimo Roman !

I agree with you on the sound file. My 2009 EM-1 is much nicer to listen too(especially the chuffing, much smoother) compared the latest run EM-1's. Newer chuffs sound like a pounding hammer sometimes on some locomotives and it just isnt as pleasant to have running around a layout for an extended amount of time. Great engine addition. Northerns are always great locomotives.

I agree, not only that but a lot of the horns on the diesels now are really ear piercing as well compared to the older ones. I’m not trying to sound like a stickler or anything I still love a lot of the newer models but you can definitely tell the difference between the older legacy models and the newer ones!

Congrats on the find. This locomotive is no. 1 on my wish list. I relentlessly stock e-bay all the time looking for one. I know one day I will find it. Or maybe just maybe Lionel will re-introduce it in an upcoming catalog.

I would think someone’s already mentioned this, but the UP big boys, challengers, and FEF’s all had the same whistles. So that’s correct. Unless you just don’t like the exact sound file? You want it to be just SLIGHTLY different?

The answer to your questions about LIONEL is simple they are A-HOLES not real train enthusiasts just business they really don’t cater to the real train lovers that want to see models that emulate the real ones the prototype’s if you will just business and yeah for the damn money that you have to shell out you still don’t get satisfied yes frustrating indeed!!! You can literally just skip to where he actually runs the trains… I personally like how he goes into detail about the engine, but for those who don’t (like you) you’re not forced to look at the entire video.
