Learn to Lip Trill. Many singers use Lip Bubbles...and many singers are doing them incorrectly. Dr Dan shows us how to do a lip bubble RIGHT! Get the most out of your lip bubbles - they're a great vocal exercise.
0:25 What are Lip Bubbles
Lip bubbles, or lip trills as they are sometimes called, are from the semi-occluded vocal tract activities family, and they have been around for ages.
1:19 The Primary Sound
The aim in any lip bubble is to ensure that the tone is the primary sound.
2:30 Learning to Lip Bubble
Before I work on lip bubbles with my private students, I always address two key topics first: tension management and breath management. A good lip bubble has an easily distinguishable tone with a free and agile larynx that is capable of moving through each of the vocal registers with ease.
3:34 Two More Things
Before you go off and start working on your lip bubbles there are two more things you need to be conscious of in order to get the most out of the activity.

Thanks so much for this Dr Dan. Realise this vid is two years old already but I'm brand new to lip trills. You made them look so easy...that was epic! I simply could not do that properly at first and thought ..I'll never get this. Then I sought out and specifically did the breathing management exercises on the CD (as you said you do this with students months before learning bubbles.) So after that and much practice( basically everywhere I went..within reason) I got the bubbles happening! It actually feels and sounds like it should, and with more control. 😊 Thanks again! bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb

Thanks, Dr. Dan! I think for now I’ve got too much tension in my neck and/or shoulders to do lip bubbles correctly. I have been feeling tension in my vocal folds during/after doing them, so until I get the tension relaxed, no more lip bubbles as part of my warmup regime!

Thanks for this nice tutorial. Though I have done nearly 8 audio albums, I have never done any vocal exercises. I am glad that I have now come to value the importance for one to do warm ups of the music apparatus we have to get higher performances. Till today, I had not heard of lip rolls and lip bubbles. I hope to pay more attention to this and other exercises before recording my songs.

I'm a singer, entertainer and I've never heard of this before. I've tried to learn from your instruction but can't seem to get the hang of it. I've had vocal training for most of my life. My first teacher was Marni Nixon, and Ron Dam but neither taught me this. I have a 4 1/2 octave range, so I should be able to master this, I hope, lol. I'll continue to watch and mimic you. How important is this, and why am I having trouble? I do have very full lips, and maybe I need to exercise them more, idk?

I had learned of "lip rolls"(same thing) and tried it. It was always hard for me to do, and of course I had no way to know there even was a wrong way. I had trouble making it last before I had even used much breath, the lips just wouldn't keep moving, so I tried "harder". Now I realise I was pushing too hard. It had made me feel like I was playing tonsil hockey, and not in a good way. Thankyou for a much more clarifying video than I had yet found. I do have a question about whether the "B" trill (liproll) is superior or much different in benefit to the "D" trill (tongue version)? I do find the D trill easier, and wondered if that would defeat the purpose.

I've been visiting a speech therapist for two years and a half (after a hard desease which affected my voice) and I think she never explained lip bubbles as good - and tersely - as you did. Thank you very much for sharing those tips! I was wondering, is it normal to experience some hoarseness after completing these exercises? It was never my case, but I heard that some people have that problem and it would be nice to know the reason (laryngeal tension, maybe?). Again, thanks for the video!

@DrDanRobinson

Laura, the 'placement' will move around depending on the vowel you are singing, and where in the range you are singing it. This being said, I think it is helpful to, for the most part, aim to maintain a forward sense of placement...generally speaking.

How come my tongue slightly sticks out when I do a lip bubble?from your demo I don't see yours sticking
@DrDanRobinson
@DrDanRobinson Жыл бұрын
During a lip bubble exercise, it's not uncommon for some individuals to have their tongue slightly sticking out between their lips. The tongue's position during this exercise can vary depending on the individual's anatomy, habits, or personal preference. As long as the exercise produces the desired effect of relaxed lips and a free, unstrained vocal production, sticking your tongue slightly out should not be a concern. However, if you find that the tongue's position is causing discomfort or negatively affecting the exercise, try adjusting your technique. You can experiment with gently pulling your tongue back, keeping it behind the lower teeth, or even lightly touching the roof of your mouth. The goal is to find a comfortable position that allows you to perform the lip bubble exercise effectively and without strain. Remember, every person's anatomy and habits are different, so finding what works best for you is essential. Working with a vocal coach can also provide personalised guidance and help you refine your technique for optimal results.
