Thank you so much for sharing this video, I really enjoyed the info. 👍🏾 With all that water addition do you need to add preservative?

I had a bottle of body wash I purchased that had too little consistency to keep it in my hand long enough to get to my body-it was going down the drain unused. I mixed a half teaspoon of xanthan gum with 5 grams of olive oil. I added this mixture to the 16 to 18 ounces of body wash still in my 24 ounce bottle and mixed it all up. The result is a thick, rich feeling liquid. Xanthan is hard to impossible to dissolve in water so it should be dissolved in oil, not water. A little olive or other oil is fine in soap.

Thanks for contributing your knowledge of soaps to the KZfaqs! I'm making an industrial hand cleaner; and up until now I've been killing myself on buying these polymer thickeners to add in; so hearing how you more experienced folk do it helps a lot! What was that thing you mentioned with borax? I've heard that using borax as a thickener is pretty feasible with anionic surfactants-- but I've been having trouble finding more information on it. Is it really just as easy as making a 20% borax solution and plotting a salt-curve? Also do you get your rheology changing drastically after about 3-4 days?

Yes.

Thank you!! Just a question, someone here mentioned using borax with less water I take it that is the borax solution she is talking about to get the thicker consistency? Or less water when diluting? Man now have confused myself. Hiehie.

Hi Zanet, yes you can add borax as a thickener too. Make a 33% borax solution and add 2 to 3 tablespoons per pound of soap stock to start. You just have to test and test until you figure out what will work for your formula. I prefer using borax as it acts as an emulsifier too. Personally, boiling off excess water just never did it for me. When I make LS, I always start with diluting at 12oz of water ppo of paste. Then add water from there till I get everything diluted. Really, it is just testing to see the consistency cause there are other factors like what the fragrance added is going to do to the soap too. HTH, Robin

Robin, how about a video on how to make gel/body wash? I tried one and it is still sitting, so I don't know if the texture is going to be the way I want it to be. The learning curve with dilution and adding borax, adding glycerin is still confusing to me..I have read Carherine Failor's book but still...any help on that?
@RiverCountySoapworks10 жыл бұрын
Happy Easter Zanet! Are you wanting a very thick body wash as your final result? There is a fine line you can't cross in liquid soap to get that thickness before the soap coagulates. I've done it before using borax and got a very nice thick soap that sat on the bath poof and didn't run right through it like the liquid soap does. Glycerin never thickened anything for me. I use it only as a conditioner in the soap. When I dilute I always start with 12oz of water per pound of paste and go from there. I think a borax solution is going to be better to use for a thick body wash. Salt works fine for the liquid soap in my opinion but I do like the texture borax gives when going for a thicker product. There is a huge learning curve and I feel your confusion as I went through lots and lots of tests myself. Take a look at what you have already made. What does it look like now that it has sat? You might be able to thicken it up now. That is what I would try doing myself. Make up a borax solution. Take some of your soap stock out and add some to it. See what happens. Let me know.

Happy Easter Robin. I will do that and let you know. For a beginner what is the best superfat that you will recommend? Is 0% good and then have to superfat? It was mentioned that the 10% water or unpurities in KOH are already worked in there? How to go about with working out the superfat?
@RiverCountySoapworks10 жыл бұрын
Zanet, use Summerbee Meadows calculator. It has those impurities figured in and is very accurate for liquid soap. I use a 1% discount and do not have to neutralize. You can use anywhere from 1 to 3%. I just like clear soap. Also, using both KOH and NAOH can help to get a thick soap. You have to play around with percentages but try 80%KOH and NAOH or 90%KOH and 10% NaOH. Make batches with both and see what happens. Invest in a ph meter if you don't already have one. PH strips are pretty useless and you really need a meter to check your soap ph and also make any corrections if necessary.
@alomdiewereld10 жыл бұрын
Thank you for that information and helping with the percentage. That helps a lot. Yes I do need to get a ph meter. I have gathered that a person is pretty lost without one. I will take do as you say. Thank you Robin!

I use Olive and Castor but really you can use just about any liquid oils. Just experiment.

I like borax too. I went round and round whether to use it in soap for sale because of the "alleged" safety issues out there and because the EU does not allow it. Then I had a conversation with a fellow soaper in Spain who told me that borax is allowed in the EU in a small amount and she uses it in her liquid soap. So go figure. At any rate salt works LOL!
