Do you add a preservative to the final product?

@RiverCountySoap I think the million dollar question is: If you have watery soap instead of putting a solution of water & salt into the soap to thicken it why wouldn't you just add a little salt to the soap & eliminate the water? Forgive me if it's a stupid question but I don't understand the water part considering you're trying to avoid watery soap...

Your liquid soap making is impressive and quite difficult. Please kindly tell me your measurements of the oils and quantities of lye solution.

Hi, is that necessary to add preservative for liquid soap after diluting
@fhm213 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of debates about this topic. I've just started making soap so I haven't been able to keep it for a long time and see what happens without preservatives. I normally add 2% citric acid and extra lye to form chelates. That neutralizes metal particles and prevents from spoiling. Also I add vitamin E. That prevents oxidation. I know other people add rosemary extract to prevent oxidation. Or you can add some synthetic additive.

If you preserve the soft paste while it is being stored, which do you use please?
@connieback75774 жыл бұрын
I had a bottle of body wash I purchased that had too little consistency to keep it in my hand long enough to get to my body-it was going down the drain unused. I mixed a half teaspoon of xanthan gum with 5 grams of olive oil. I added this mixture to the 16 to 18 ounces of body wash still in my 24 ounce bottle and mixed it all up. The result is a thick, rich feeling liquid. Xanthan is hard to impossible to dissolve in water so it should be dissolved in oil, not water. A little olive or other oil is fine in soap.

I say trust peolle like this using more natural ingredients. The wholesale suppliers are trying to cut down the steps and making many of the ingredients into bug long chemical names then jacking up the prices so we "think" we have to buy their product. Research their msds sheets or ask the retailers the ingredients then Google those long names. You would be surprised what a simple common name or jargon it will be then we can concoct that organic or natural mixture for a fraction of the price. Example: Hydrosol (also known as Floral Water).

Is it just a terrible thing to use another type of mixer in this type of soap making - more of a beater for cakes etc? So we don’t blow up our stick blenders? It’s one thing bringing our cold process stops to trace, but geeze, running a stick blender for an hour or more is not what those little guys were built for.
