It’s so refreshing hearing someone talking about the big trends, standing back and taking a look at the overarching themes. I think the TikTok generation is constantly going on about “new trends” when in reality they are all under the same umbrella but you, with you wide knowledge of makeup history, can take a step back and look at it all for what it is. It’s a nice slow pace which I appreciate

I think that's partly due to marketimg. Brands want things to appear "fresh" and "new" so they'll rename old trends. Like Cloud Skin or the Cold Girl Look. Then social media picks up on the marketing term and we have a "new" trend, but not really lol

That was an EDUCATION! I think you should make more videos like this Lisa where you dissect trends and actually teach us something about make up history. No one else explains it like you. You have the knowledge, wisdom and authority to do so. Fascinating!

I was a teenager too I used brown eye shadow black mascara and black eyeliner. Was terrible with eyeliner. Nude lip gloss. 😂

Keep in mind that back then nobody used primer on their eyelids. I don’t think it existed. A huge part of the greasy eye look was we were just young and greasy. We didn’t really have to add any shine at of the time. Things were simpler, and so was our makeup. We didn’t obsess over it or have to show it to anyone. We lined our eyes black, threw on a burgundy lip (maybe), a flannel and went to a coffee shop to read. Try it sometime. Bring it all back. (The only thing we did obsess over was having pencil thin insane eyebrows. Bring it all back, minus that. 😂)

I was working in a high end department store when we got the original Bobbi Brown line. We had an exclusive on it for years so I felt ever so chic wearing it. In my humble opinion, it lost something when she sold out to Lauder - now that she's totally away from it, I fear that it's turning into more of the usual, with glitter and silly names for colors instead of the basic descriptive shade names that she started with. Fortunately they still seem to be carrying the original lipsticks that caused such a craze back then.

I was 19 in 1994 and my aesthetic was very much the Drew Barrymore thin dark brows, virtually white eyeshadow all over the eye and a dark, black red lipstick. My contact lenses were most displeased when I tried the grungy eyes however! I love the look you’ve done today Lisa but the real joy in this video is the history and your own experiences of that time. I would love it if you’d make more documentaries on the history of make up and it’s trends. The BBC work you did was fabulous ♥️

I was best friends with Kevyn since he was a teenager and worked with him on many projects..so I thought I would let you know some of his favorite products. He usually prepared skin with Kheils ultra facial moisturizer…the liquid one…his favorite eyeshadow to use was Madeline Mono matte collection because they were so pigmented …the matte black was used to contour the lid and as liner…he use to say I have never seen anything this black! When the face was matte he loved Lancôme cream powder base…the Halston model Chris Royer turned hiim on to it…it was the beginning of him “baking”…she told him put it on heavy under my eyes ..let it sit and then dust it off….h was so excited that day and told me oh wait till I show you this trick!…when makeup became more natural and dewy he’s would lightly use Cody air spun…in the leopard print box. Makeup was so much fun and very creative at that point. I could go on and on but just wanted to give a little input….great video and you Lisa are a great artist.

What a throwback! Being a teenager in the 90s, this brings back so many memories… I had lots of acne, so I stuck with heavier coverage cream or powder foundations (the ones in compacts you’d apply with a sponge). I always smeared a kohl liner on the eyes just like you did (and never fell out of love with the definition and light it brought to my brown eyes). And then MAC Lipglass ;) We only had very expensive luxury classic brands like Chanel and Shiseido, or very bad drugstore products (does anyone remember Gemey?). I still remember getting my first YSL touche éclat already in the early 2000s… new products took soooo long to get here… My mom never allowed me to pluck my brows so I got away from that trend. In the later nineties I had them a bit more plucked but nothing like that very thin line. It’s still a gorgeous look :)

@@pliktl Gen Z here; I have one of those. My grandma bought it for me. I usually wear it as a natural peachy blush instead of a face powder 😅 If I use it as a powder, I apply a bluish base underneath so the orange of the powder can be neutralised

Oh Lisa, big love! This is exactly how we looked in 1995 when I moved from the countryside to Vienna (for university)! When we went to concerts and festivals, students parties, university and even jobs. Lived in make-up, kajal from the night before, very pale (we did not self tan or use bronzer). I love this look and sometimes I still do it. Thank you so much! Edit: I feel we were so free back then.

Born in 94 so didn’t get to ‘live’ this for the first time around. But grew up admiring the ‘coolness’ of those in their teens and twenties. Never been able to let it go and embrace the heavier looks and now it’s back! Thanks for the education, Lisa. Your videos are a cut above the rest! ❤

I was 15 in 1994, experimented with a tiny bit of matte brown eyeshadow. 1995 ushered in Poppy King’s matte lipsticks here in Australia, named after the 7 deadly sins. I wore Avarice and Lancôme kohl in black.

No one on the Internet has the ability to capture and explain the history of makeup like Lisa! I’m 68 now and I had that Kevin Aucoin book and used the Vaseline as well. I actually did sleep in the makeup and the second day was better than the first. Thank you Lisa for bringing back such wonderful memories! I can’t wait to see what you do next!!! I love that grunge and grunge make up started with music, bands and musicians and was an authentic movement. It was a way for people to express themselves and be a part of a sub culture and the music they loved.

My mom actually grew up in Kevyn Aucoin's hometown, possibly on the same road, according to a local newspaper. One of the employees at the Sephora there told me about how she got to meet Kevyn's father, Isadore. She said he was the sweetest guy and was very proud of his son, which means a lot in a very socially conservative area where boys are pressured to be macho and play sports.

It’s amazing how evocative of a period of history and life a makeup trend can be. This takes me right back to amazing times at Leeds university in the mid to late 90s, and wearing this look to lectures. I studied physics and distinctively remember that I should have been revising for a quantum mechanics exam but instead I was sat in front of a mirror plucking my eyebrows to nothing 😂😅. Love that you’re telling us all the makeup history, it’s fascinating!!! xx

Yup, being a teen during the early nineties, I remembered that look. Even the movies had a 90s look, one in particular was the “Ref”. Judy Davis’s makeup was so 90’s. It was a grunge look, with an all matte look and browns. I did the no makeup, makeup as a teen. But I found it quite interesting during that time.

Love it! I'm 45 and still love this look so much, actually much more than the trend we saw the last 10 years with lots of make up, contouring, highlighters and stuff like that! When you started your make up I thought : Embryolisse and Mac foundation! that foundation was a big deal. I still have 2 products from Stephane Marais - a lipstick and a cream blush (that I don't use, but don't want to throw them!). I remember he was the 1st make up artist who was having a line, it was a big thing!! Also, I remember reading something about Carine Roitfeld, saying that she would do her black eyes and then have a bath, and so the make up would look smudgy because of the steam! Anyway, really loved that look, thank you for sharing!

1994: I was a 9 years-old French little girl. I always loved the 90's grunge make-up and the earthy tone of that era. Somehow, I stuck with the brown tones in my everyday make-up with a 2023 twist to it. Fantastic video and make-up history lesson. Very enlightening regarding the trends as well. It's quite similar to literature movements, for each era, there is always a counter-movement that follows. It reflects itself in Arts in general, whether it's music, cinema, make-up, etc. It's fascinating. Thank you for this incredible video, Lisa. As always, it's no surprise given that you are truly one of the most talented make-up artists of our time.

I did a bunch of catalog/print modeling in the mid 90’s. It seemed like every makeup person started our faces with a light layer of Vaseline. A pea size amount they would rub vigorously in their hands and then rub all into my face. I once asked why and was told that the foundation goes over it like a dream. I always had to wash it off right when the shoot was over or id have breakouts the next day.

We used Maybelline Black pencil liner in Red pencil- to make them more gloppy, we lit a match and burned the tip before application. This warm but not hot! Black goop made the whole look. Mushed up it was eyeshadow and also liner and waterline. That did stay on for days. 🎉 Also mixed some black with red lipstick and used as a stain! A lot of products - black shadows etc came from Patricia Fields’s store on 8th st (village).

Sorry for my spelling lol- I lost my lil glasses again and was using old ones but they made it all blurry. The Red Pencils came 2 in a bundle for .99 cents. The match heated just the tip until it cooled off and was pliable. I still use them and buy them for waterline- there is nothing better. I saw they now come in taupe, and brown shades - I am going to pick some up for my experiments!😍

This is definitely a very editorial look. Real young women who were in their late teens and 20’s during this era (such as myself) didn’t wear makeup like this. We wore a very monotone look. Brown eye liner, brown blush, brown lipstick. Heavy powder. Then there were the girls with the dark lip liner and light foiled lipstick with basically a matching eye. But monotone was the look of the day.

Agreed, certainly no contour or highlight. Concealer was only if you had spots! No Vaseline or grease.

Where I grew up, this is absolutely the look we tried to achieve (but with much less expensive products in most cases, as it was a sort of rural area at the time). We definitely used Vaseline and whatever cheapie kohls and kajals we could find at Walmart or the local drugstore, as well as burgundy lip products. Brown was popular, too, but I don't recall monotone looks being very common in my area. 🤷‍♀️ Of course, I'm sure we didn't look nearly as great as Lisa does here. 😆

I think there was a lot of regionalism since social media wasn’t around and things would trickle down maybe from magazines or celebrities, but were made really popular by that one girl who knew what she was about, or by whatever your friends thought was cool and then was made uniform.

Loved this, Lisa, as a teenage 90s kid! I was around 15 and this was one of the best times in music, fashion, makeup, and the fashion magazines were the best at this time, if you ask me! I miss the scents, too (I will always love Sun, Moon, Stars by Lagerfeld and Sunflowers by Elizabeth Arden -- anyone else remember that?). I remember the amazing editorials in magazines like Allure, Vogue, Bazaar, and even magazines like Mademoiselle and Seventeen -- I had cut outs and pages scotch-taped onto my wall. Cindy Crawford and Todd Oldham were rockin' it on House of Style (MTV) which I never missed an episode of. Kevin Aucoin was a genius; it was sad when he passed away. I really miss those days. I guess this is the closest we can get to summoning them back. The one thing I don't miss from this year: the plastic child Goody barrettes. They were cool on riot grrls at the time, but there were also a lot of sequins, new fabrics and textures, and iconic lipstick and nail colors that never went out of style. PS -- if they ever discontinue Touche Eclat, I think I'd cry.

I have always loved a tame grunge makeup. Not to runny… I’m 56 and sheer, glossy, Smokey amber browns are still my ❤. Back then I was in the industry. Doing makeup still makes me happy❤. Revlon Rum Raisin comes to mind. I still wear it to this day. 😍❤️‍🔥💄 Kevin Aucoin was my Idol. I ran out and bought his book and read it like the Bible. Studied it. Breathed it. Applied what I learned from it. He was perfection in his craft. He is missed.❤❤❤

I am grinning while watching this video because I’ve just unearthed my FaceForward book by Kevyn Aucoin and was thinking of doing his In Balance look. I think the reason 90’s look will always comeback is because it is such an effortless look but has a lot of impact and can be interpreted in so many ways. It is so classic yet so modern. And I think you interpreted it so well.

I typically love how light handed you are, and what transformations you can make with your talent and such a light hand. But to me, this is much more wearable than what I would consider to be editorial. Maybe I just don’t understand the term well enough. But I could totally see rocking this look to the grocery store.

I turned 20 in 1991, the 90's were bomb! In makeup and because of my age, it truly defined my lifelong aesthetic towards beauty. A dark kholed eye and brown earthy lips... ICONIC!!! And to this day brown based lip colors OWN me. Thankfully, my eyebrows grew back in😂 Thanks mom for telling me to stop, I'll regret someday.

This took me back! I graduated from high school in 1994 and this was exactly how I did my makeup. However, I did pluck my eyebrows into oblivion! I adored Revlon's lipsticks in Blackberry and Rum Raisin and loved the look of a nearly bare face with that deep purple-y red lip. I'd love to see you recreate that version of 90s makeup too.

Thanks Lisa for always doing a great job providing the context and history around a certain look. I know that grunge in particular was a rejection of the digital music inventions and trends of the 80s that created an ultra-polished product. As you've said, this new go-around of pared back and more natural aesthetic could be brought on by some of the same reasons - a rejection of the technological deluge we're currently in. It's so important to know where we've been to understand where we're going. Gonna go smudge on some eyeliner!

I'm so fascinated by this. I've recently felt inspired by a combination of Grunge and Bubblegum Pop. I haven't quite nailed down how this would come together, but the simplicity and starkness of the Grunge, with the innocent prettiness of the Bubblegum Pop to make, I dunno, Bubblegum Grunge/Punk is very much what I want to do. It's quite an eclectic combination, but it's something I want to do.

Awesome! Being a teen in the 90's was an experience. In the first half of the 90's I remember everything being matte, eyeshadow wise, and berry toned. Then towards the end of the decade, lots of glitter and colour came in vogue. Love your channel!

This video brought back so many memories! I was definitely a grunge girl in early to mid 90s. MAC was my go to brand. I made the mistake of tweezing my eyebrows thin! Thank God they grew back. RIP Kevin Aucoin. His books are genius! ❤❤❤

Fascinating. I love how you can blend history and makeup trends into a compelling video. The history of Kevyn Aucoin's influence was so interesting. I do have two of his books because his aesthetic has always called to me. And I was so surprised by the use of vaseline and Elizabeth Arden's Eight Hour Cream to get shine. Today there are so many specialized highlighters that it's hard to remember simple products for simple solutions. Thank you for sharing your vast knowledge and this fun retro look.

I started wearing makeup in the 90s. I was spot-prone and had lots of redness and I hated what I was seeing on my friends to do with foundation, think that maginot jaw line between too dark foundation and bare neck. So, I lived for that dark eyeliner and dark brown lip look, no base products, because I felt it drew attention away from my skin and put the spotlight elsewhere. From now til then, I’ve always felt much more confident in a dark lip than a nude lip, trends be darned. Suffice it say, Ms. Eldridge’s Decade, in all formulas, is my soulmate lip color! 😍

So glad you didn’t overcommit to the thin brows. Many of us in the 90’s didn’t incorporate thin brows. Thank goodness! Look at how many people now have to apply so many brow products due to over tweezing. Gorgeous look you’ve created for todays video! Always enjoyable content in your videos!❤🌟

Ah 1992, I had just discovered fashion magazines, .I had no clue about makeup, I just loved the looks! From Aucoin to the grungy mid 90s artists like Dick Page or Val Garland made a huge impact on me. I still love undone makeup for "real life". thanks for this lovely nostalgia!

Grateful for the 90s. I loved hearing your overview of what 1994 was like. I had graduated by then but when I was in high school you could see the difference in makeup being worn. There were the cheerleaders with their red lipstick and bright pink cheeks and then there were the rest of the people wearing mostly heavy smeared eyeliner, very light blush and lipgloss but mostly foundation lips. ❤

This makes my Gen X makeup artist heart sing. It reminds me of being in my mid 20’s and buying everything from Bobbi Brown when she had only 6 neutral eye shadows. Also I love to leave a bit of the darkness under my eyes to this day. It leaves a bit of mystery…was I up to no good last night? You’ll never know!

This is such a cool look. It's funny, it gives me the feels, despite the fact that I was born in 2000. But I hear that from a lot of people who are in my shoes. I just wish I could piece together what it is about this decade that tugs on the heartstrings of so many. Why it oozes so much nonchalance, freedom and plain cool. I always saw it as a parallel to the 1920's, because the grunge look is similar to the silent film look, the androgynous women's clothing matches too, and there's an overall feeling of letting your hair down and letting your mascara smudge, in search of a more casual approach to life, maybe that's the appeal. But I think the character of Evelyn in The Mummy (1999) showcases very well that similarity to the 20's. The movie is set in the 20's and her makeup gives off this dual vibe, it looks 20s, but also, 90's. Also, I love that you shared the actual products that you used to use back then

I loved Kevin's Nude makeup line in the 90's. Now that I'm 60 with good skin I still love a smudged liner matte contour in and above the crease and a medium shimmer on my lid with loads of lashes. My focus is skin and complexion and Kitten Mischief lipstick is one of my faves!! Thanks Lisa

In the early 90’s I was in high school, then college from 1992 to 1998. This is bringing back a lot of memories. I never wore a grunge makeup look, but I remember most of my lipstick was Mac - always, always the Spice lip pencil, two browny red lipsticks- one called Paramount and the other I think was Taupe. I had just one soft brown shadow and one beige. I never wore blush or mascara because my lashes were naturally dark. There was this amazing brand called Prescriptives that would custom blend foundation which was amazing as my skin is olive and hard to match and I often had concealer from them too. When Lisa showed those deep plums I do remember having a couple of really dark, purple-berry lipsticks but I don’t remember the brand, I just remember it didn’t wear well. I had L’Oreal black eyeliner that smudged like crazy, but I didn’t wear that everyday, just for going out. I didn’t own a ton of makeup then, not as many brands as there are today and was mostly a broke college student. The Prescriptives custom blend was a splurge for sure! Later on there was a brand of face powder too called T Le Clerc and the color I used was Banane because everything was matte, matte, matte.

The way you talk about makeup eras and how you explain the evolution of a look or makeup during a period of time is truly like watching a masterclass in art history, growing up in the 90s in the middle east in Cairo grunge was huge, we listened to nirvana and wore big chunky laceup boots and wore dark eye shadow and lipstick, no blush and ofcourse over plucked our brows, what at time to have been young, thank you for taking us down memory lane for those of us who lived during that time 🖤🖤🖤

As someone who lived, worked and went to clubs/gigs, I've got to say that my makeup was really like this. Coming off the back of being a punk and then getting into the New Romantic scene I went from heavy, dark and intimidating (late '70's) to a more colourful, structured look ('80's - think Boy George and Adam Ant) - I also found Barbra Daly and discovered the "halo eye" , which consisted of browns, gold and green. The '90's out came that khol liners with a vengeance!! Red lippies and/or glosses were my choice for my lips. Funnily enough I never used a lip liner, I hated the over blown look (I still do), as the lipsticks wore off all that was left was, imo, a strange line outlining the lips. I thought it looked dreadful 🙈 I didn't know about the brands you've mentioned here, except Mac of course. So, it was drugstore or Estee Lauder/Chanel for me. This was a fantastic "trip down memory lane" - Thank you Lisa 🥰 Love always 🌺💛🌺💛🌺

This is by far my favourite video from you yet, Lisa. So educational and fascinating coming from someone who truly knows their craft. Perfectly timed as well, as I’ve noticed in the last few months 90s fashion appearing back in shops and on teenagers. No doubt I’ll notice the makeup shifting too. Please do more videos like this dissecting the makeup trends and where they originated. P.s. lately I started using my crystal nebula highlighter on the lids and I think that would be great on top of the kohl pencil you used in this look as a modern twist of the classic 90s eye. 😍
