@@coconuciferanuts339 Sure, this discussion is happening in the context of the war in Ukraine... While I agree that most human idiosyncrasies are harmless, each one of us has destructive ones as well. It's just that laws, customs and education help most of us avoid indulging in them excessively. Sadly, this war is nothing new, and that is a problem. The silver lining here is the global reaction to it... but I'm sceptical about how far beyond Russia this enthusiasm for enforcing IHL will last.

A key trigger was a decree on 10 June by Russia's defence ministry ordering all volunteer detachments - like the Wagner Group - to sign contracts with the government, which would effectively be a takeover of Prigozhin's mercenary troops. Of course this was not taken lightly. A mandatory draft into the Russian military by Wagners men. No thank you. Mercs are much more free than enlisted men. This was no anti-war peace march on to Moscow where Wagner was going to sit outside the Kremlin singing Kumbya and stand up to an unjust horrible war. Quite the opposite, Wagner has been complaining it is being held back from fighting properly in Ukraine. So those that were cheering on this attempted coup are nuts. How would having a bunch of psychopathic mercenaries in charge of nukes be good for anyone? The reason the march on Moscow was halted was because most likely Prigozchin cut a deal and he also knew it was doomed to fail from the start. Lets get serious folks. 90% of the Russian military was going to stay loyal to the Kremlin. And Wagner forces would have been nuked literally to send a message. The Kremlin saw this comming days in advance. How do I know, Because Everbody knew, even the CIA. The Wagner were massing troops and equipment on the Russian border days before the so called coup attempt. So What does Putin do? He gives stand down orders to not start anything with the Wagner group as they move towards Moscow. Obviously some did not get the message, But in the end Prigozchin cuts a deal for himself and his men. There is no devious underlying conspiracy here. No sneaky Belarus plot, no CIA spending billions to buy out Wagner, and no country wide revolt of the common man. So the deal was probably.... Any Wagner merc wishing to stay a free mercenary go to Belarus. That includes you Prigozchin. As for the last wacky conspiracy theory is that Putin is so angry he will track Prigozchin to the ends of the earth to finish him. Putin is too smart to throw away a useful tool like Prigozchin. He now owes Putin his life. For all we know this deal was cut days in advance of this lame coup attempt/protest march just so Prigozchin could save face and flee to Belarus after being responsible for sending thousand to their deaths in what has now become a cluster-f of a war by the Kremlin.

The thing is that a large part of the orc population is totally oblivious to everything that has happened. They are spoon fed propaganda from the state of Orcville - the average person in Orcville thinks Ukraine is a bunch of Nazis, Putler is God and the West is trying to stamp out Orcville. They have effectively been brainwashed over multiple decades into that is all they have known. It's not a "free" society like in most parts of the world. There is no way for Putin to end the war in Ukraine without looking fatally weakened. This is not the case for Prigozhin - he could stop the war and still look strong in the eyes of the Russian people. The general's point that Prighozin turned around due to not getting the support of Russian troops as he moved north is the real reason why this mutiny failed. Kadyrov stayed loyal to Putin and Prighozin realised that his gamble had failed. A colourful day in Russia will assist the Ukrainians no end. Historians will compare this move to Napoleon's gamble when he escaped from Elba. As he moved towards Paris the French army sided with little corporal and we all know what happened a few months later. Prigozhin's St. Helena will be short stay in Belarus with a mysterious "suicide" at the end. Putin's only hope now is a Trump victory in 2024 - can he hold that long?

If is true that Prighozin made a mistake, then why Putin pardoned him? That doesn't make sense. If Putin knew that Prighozin was not going to make it, he simply should had said"bring it on". But he did the opposite, which leads me to think that Prighozin never wanted the Cremlin.

Prigozhin has been playing a long game for many months already. This man used to lie all the time, even in things that were obvious. But for many months now he has been very careful about telling the truth, He's picked the specific truths that he was going to say, cherry pick them, but he has not been lying. I always saw that as a significant symptom, something that told me he was starting to play a political long game against the other court members of the Kremlin. This was also to cement his hold on not just his own troops but those who had interacted with it. What failed as the general has said, is that he did not get any support from any military units or commanders, nor did he politically get any support from any of the higher-ups in the Kremlin. He probably overstepped but too early, because of his temper. I think his move was always going to happen, but had he not given into his temper, he might have had more success by waiting a little more time. On the other hand he probably felt forced to do what he did, because he feels, and I think rightly, that people in the Kremlin even if not the boss himself, were attempting to assassinate him. This is what I think finally pushed him over. But I think he's still playing the long game, by evidenced on the deal he made that protects those who went with him, while at the same time giving him a modicum of safety in exile. I'm not sure he made the right choice in the last bit, but, he might not have had any other palatable choices to make as far as his own safety is concerned

like everyone in Russian politics, he is an opportunist. Putin holds them in line by offering something, getting loyalty in return. Prigozhin got too powerful and is still using truth as a tool. Because it suits him right now to do so. I suppose he knows him and his forces pose a threat. He underlined the weakness of the military and underlined his own 'superiority'. Saying Putin was lied to is basically manipulating Putin into at least getting rid of the 2 guys Prigozhin hates - which was his goal. It's just that he slapped Putin in the face by doing so, I think he underestimates that, or perhaps really isn't that scared of Putin. It's an odd move, full blown powerplay, flexing bigtime!

We have already seen how the 2nd most powerful army in the world turned to be the 2nd in Ukraine. Now we also know that the former mediocre KGB-officer is as strong as Nikolai II on the spring of 1917. Looks like there´s going to be "fun" like in 1918-1921 or at least like in the 1990s. Good news to Ukraine and the civilised world.

I wouldn't be so sure. Prigozhin as a leader would be far worse than Putin, and anything might happen in the Zaporizhzhia power plant while the Moscow leadership is in disarray. My country is not far from Ukraine and some of my friends are starting to say "we hate Putin but it would be better if he stayed in power".

Prigozhin's criticisms were ALWAYS aimed at Putin. It was politic to direct the charges at Shoigu and Gerasimov, but they, after all, were commanded by Putin. Only by attacking the underlings and humoring the boss was Prigozhin able to be seen on state television (thus gaining public support and establishing himself as a strongman, tough and smart. He may be pushed aside (for how long?) but the damage to Putin has been done; no longer a strong leader or brilliant strategist, but a weakened, ordinary man.

Prigozhin folded his inside straight when called by Gerasimov; so the erstwhile black knight realized his limited reach, giving Putin ostensible, though pyrrhic victory over said aborted putsch. Putin is weaked still; and, if he remembers his Machiavelli will do the necessary cruelty quickly.

People think too much in terms of Putin as some absolute monarch. Putin isn't just Putin. It is the KGB gang that repositioned him from Dresden to Leningrad, then to Moscow. The senior figures behind that are no more, but we've been left their subordinates: Putin and his comrades, like Patrushev etc. These are the worst of the worst from the old KGB, in every respect: fanaticism, paranoia, corruption, and murderous personality. And this gang is just dealing the cards among themselves, to see how they can best prepare for Putin's succession without their corrupt and authoritarian power system unravelling, without power change. Therefore, they eliminate or keep at bay opposition figures like Nemtsov, Navalny, Kara-Murza, etc., while popular support that is lost by Putin gets diverted to fake "opposition" figures such as late Zirinovsky or, today, Prigogin. This way, whenever the time comes to replace Putin, some other gang member will be crowned, and business as usual will resume. Possibly going even further than Putin could or felt necessary, in terms of tyranny and fascism.
