I can't get enough of the .22 LR bench rest. Keep it up. I tried a box of the Eley Team yesterday morning in my CZ 457 American 24.8" barrel, and it performed very well. It did not feed well using the single shot adapter, but it fed smoothly and perfectly from the magazine. Accuracy was great. I shot ten 5 shot groups at 50 yards. Five of those groups went less than half an inch. WOW.

Hey Day, I don't know a single BR shooter than I shoot with that loads from the magazine. With the soft lead/coated bullets there's a lot of potential to mar them/scrape the wax off inconsistently during feeding. Depending on the gun it may not matter but if you want to eliminate that variable then single loading does it. Given the fact you're shooting for accuracy with a front and rear rest off a bench you may as well.

Yeah no harm I may try it next. Though I know all BR shooter are mainly shooting single fed rifles. Some of this is about what the rifle is possible of with the best ammo and how most would be using it meaning with a magazine. I do have a single feed sled and may just give it a try after I determine the best ammo. Might be a reason for a range trip just to complete this series 🤣

@@Dayattherange Well, given that many people may not use front and rear mechanical rests on a bench as well ignoring the additional accuracy potential of single loading for that reason doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Also I've always thought of it this way. If I know that my rifle is shooting most accurately then that accuracy translates into all situations I may put it in. In those situations I personally might be less accurate but I'll know the rifle is doing its part. If I figure out that the rifle is less accurate(usually in the form of fliers) when feeding from the magazine then maybe I can fix that. Although as usual, different strokes for different folks! Enjoy your range time!

How come no one ever includes Eley Biathlon in their tests -- I can't be the only person in North America who shoots the stuff? 🙂

I have a few boxes left of Eley Target. It shoots pretty good but has never out-shot Aguila Super Extra in any of my rifles.

Try a different magazine when you have flyers like that, Eli. I see you have your rear Ransom rest set with two feet pointed forward. That's what works best for my rear Ransom rest also; it's the most comfortable for me and positions better on my bench. 👍

I'm thinking a machinists approach may be mindful here.. Maybe we could push a projectile down the bore for some exact spec measurments and with that info measure ammo diameters to reference which diameter shoots best??

My shooting buddies at the club were sitting around just jawing, and the topic of Eley ammo came up, It was interesting that 4 out of the 5 of us there have never had any luck with any Eley ammo except for their benchrest semi auto match in our 10/22s. Cyclops Joe has had great luck with it , as has Josh. Interesting test. I think you might be on to something with the bullet shape . One other thought... did you by chance install the bolt shims using Lapua/ SK ammo as your calibration ammo? I believe Eley can be as much as 0.012" less in rim thickness according to my local ammo guru. Would it be crazy to think a change in shims might dial the eley in ?

Have you shot RWS R50 or R100? It shoots better than Tenex or Match in my LA101, plus the flat nose on the Eley gets caught going into the chamber which the round nose of the RWS or Eley HVHP doesn't.

I see you sometimes having what I call double grouping where the shots want to go into one group or the other. In my experience that is the rifle and/or shooter. Something is changing with the rifle and/or shooter. There may be something different in the way you hold the rifle or the way the rifle is supported by the rests. I always shoot over a chronograph to see if there is a relationship between variation in muzzle velocity and impact point. Regarding chronographs, I had the opportunity to shoot rounds over two identical chronographs placed one right in front of the other so I got two velocity readings for the same shot. They were Caldwell. Readings varied by as much as 47 fps. for the same shot. For forty shots the average variation in readings for each shot from the two chronographs was 24 fps. I got rid of those and bought a LabRadar. Testing done by Bryan Litz of Applied Ballistics shows they are very precise. If you're ever in northwest Montana contact me and we'll try shooting 22 LR at 400 yards. Out at that range the most important factors are the variation in muzzle velocities and the variation in ballistics coefficients from shot to shot. The latter is the most important. How well a particular brand shoots at 50 or 100 yards makes little difference at long range. It's the above two factors that are significant. I have degrees in Mathematics and Physics and like to look things from that perspective. But it's important to conduct field testing to verify what the theory says should happen is really taking place. In most cases it does. I've been studying External Ballistics for the past 60 years. I've run on too long, I look forward to watching more of your videos. Thanks for all your work in putting them together.

I think that I would remove that end cap on the barrel. I think that it affects the barrel vibration harmonics, and could change group sizes.
@MMBRM
@MMBRM Жыл бұрын
There's a small possibility that's the case(it's likely too light to matter much given the weight of the barrel). However, there's no reason to believe the barrel harmonics would be better with it off than with it on.

@@MMBRM FWIW, I tried it on two of my threaded rifles with no difference. I even replaced the cap with a Kaw valley Linear compensator. I did get a poi shift with that, but groups didnt change size. But different guns, you never know. I have heard some claim it makes a difference for them.

While it may be as simple as your Lithgow doesn't like Eley Team or Target cartridges, it may also be that the current production of Eley has gone downhill. The last Tenex I bought was awful and the guy who shot next to me this past Saturday had multiple fliers with Eley Match. I used Lapua Center-X and scored a 500-24X on the IBS target, placing second. The winner shot a 500-32X, also with Center-X. Eley seems to have lost favor with the benchrest crowd as SK and Lapua are dominating.
