My football coach had a strange tactic. He said when he played football, his mother died on the same night his team lost the state finals. He said losses give him flashbacks. He would say "Boys, don't make me re-live that awful night. My heart can't take another loss. Don't put me thru that again."

The best pre-game speech I ever heard when I played inter-city baseball in the early 90’s was when our coach just came up to us on the line in left, told us to gather around him in a circle, and then he started singing the meow-mix song and walked back to the dugout. Meow meow meow meow, meow meow meow meow, meow meow meow meow meow meow meow meow etc. Keep in mind, this was the highest level baseball in our city and he was a serious coach. We died laughing and I still remember it to this day. Take care everyone.

Great coach but his pre game speeches were off the hook. His speech before the game when we went to city championships was I have $1500 riding on this game if you lose y’all going to be Fucking sorry. I kid you not.

I learned later on in life that there is beauty in losing, especially if you gave it your all. I can rest on giving it my best and losing, but I can't rest on not trying at all and winning. You'll gain more from losing than you'll ever gain from winning. Learning to embrace loss is like learning to be alone, it's a reality in life that is better confronted rather than resisted. True victory is giving it your all to the very end, whether it be a win, lose, or draw.
@davidroman16543 ай бұрын
Worst butt chewing my coach and I ever gave our team was after a close win against a team we should have beat by 15 runs. They didn't play that bad again all season. Oh yea none of the players got their "free" drink after that game either. That team learned to win with grace and to take a loss the same way, but they took the field knowing they were there to WIN the game.

As a youth baseball coach for 15 years, that sounds to me like a guy that's lost a lot of games and blames everyone else. A whole bunch of bluster, not a single word about how to actually win a baseball game or what it means to be a team. Dingers? None of those kids are hitting it out of the park. Make the other team cry? What a noble goal! Sounds like a guy that yells at a lot of umpires and refuses to shake hands after a bad loss. Not at all what baseball is supposed to be about.

I bet you haven't had a winning season in your entire life. I've coached little league and high school baseball for 25 years now, and my teams have won the championship every year but two. Did I give them your snowflake little goals? Hell no. I told them to get out there and WIN because winning is all that matters. Coincidentallyl, four players I have coached have gone pro.
@humbledriver2536Ай бұрын
@OutInLeftField2 that mindset and you specifically are the problem in coaching young adult student athletes. I won't mention all my accolades because you're not worthy to hear them, but I assure you they are plentiful. Coaching the likes of Greg Maddux, Lance Berkman, Marty Cordova, and many more. I have conducted dozens of coaching clinics for youth baseball from Florida to Las Vegas, and you represent what I personally resonate with failure.

I cannot believe people don’t realize this is satire. The kids are obviously in on it. The parents are filming it. He’s taking their minds off the big game, calming their nerves, and giving them a laugh. I’ve got to think the people outraged about this are the same ones who want Mark Twain books removed from schools. Then again, satire is most appreciated by those with higher intelligence. Triggered is no way to go through life.
@JK-vc7ie5 жыл бұрын
You are only speculating. And I don't think you're right about it. Those kids are not nervous at all and that doesn't look like a big game atmosphere in a highly competitive youth program. Good ole regular rec level baseball. Nothing more. Also, the coach slides hard into second base in co-ed rec league softball....but probably never made his HS varsity team. That's my speculation.

Australia here: presumably, that coach had undergone a deep background check in order to get his working with children clearance, and that his language is in line with tightly regulated policies and procedures, first and foremost. Following that, his language is offensive and children should be protected from it. Or, he is a rock star who knows what his kids need. Like the best coaches I had as a kid.
