@@BrantfordKia I've been doing some research, and I can't seem to find the answers to some questions. I consider you the resident Kia expert in Canada - so I'm taking a shot at posing this to you. Do you know why the towing capacity of the PHEV Sorento is lower than the regular Sorento? And if it's related to the hybrid mode, is there not a way to force the Sorento into gas-mode? I just put a hitch on, and I'm curious as to what mode I should be towing in. I sometimes wish the modes were a little easier to understand. Maybe I'll re-watch a few of your videos to get a better sense of the different modes. Thanks again for all your videos, we appreciate them.
@BrantfordKia
@BrantfordKia 2 жыл бұрын
@@lakeshorehearts My understanding of why the towing capacity is lower is because of the added weight of the PHEV. There is also the fact that the engine is not the same engine as the other vehicles, and being just a 1.6 litre turbo, they may not want to push it too much. At the end of the day, they make decisions on these things for a variety of reasons, and we don't get told why. Lastly the mode to tow in would be the NORMAL mode, but the Sport mode could be used to hold the revs higher and keep you in the powerband, so it may be useful on hills or other situations where you want power.

Hi, love your videos, I find them very useful. My questions: 1. Which version of highway drive assist does the sorento phez ex+ have? 2. What is the difference between the LKAS(Lane keep assist system) in the sorento, and the LKA(lane keeping assist) in the Santa Fe? Particularly, is one more aggressive in its correcting than the other? Thanks again for all the hard work!
@BrantfordKia
@BrantfordKia 2 жыл бұрын
The only Highway Drive Assist available right now is the first version. The second version should debut in the Ioniq 5 and EV6. There is also a difference between Lane Keeping Assist and Lane Follow Assist. Both Kia and Hyundai share this technology, so there shouldn't be a difference between brands. The Lane Follow Assist is the "more aggressive" system, but I think a more accurate description would be "more precise" as it works to hold you in the centre of the lane.

You make a great point, it DOES seem like a lot to learn, but the reality is your gasoline car is pretty complicated too. In that car, you get in, start it up and drive. In this car, you get in, start it up and drive, but in this case, you're going to save a lot of fuel. The only thing to learn is that when you get home, you probably want to plug it in to save a whole lot more fuel. While it CAN be intimidating, you don't have to understand HOW it works to appreciate THAT it works.

Thanks Peter for making these videos! What's the difference between the eco and smart modes?
@BrantfordKia
@BrantfordKia 2 жыл бұрын
The Smart Mode allows the use of the gas pedal to move it out of ECO into normal or sport modes, where the ECO mode will do it's best to resist downshifts, and give a dull pedal feel to make sure that it doesn't rev more than necessary (unless you floor it etc) Some people find the eco mode to be difficult to get used to, especially if you're a lead foot.

Nice review. What will be the durability and reliability of this car long term especially the battery life and drive train
@BrantfordKia
@BrantfordKia 2 жыл бұрын
As a class, hybrid vehicles tend to do better than traditional vehicles when it comes to overall reliability. The batteries are designed to last the life of the car, and are rarely in need of replacement, while the engine is spared from working in its toughest conditions (under hard acceleration, the electric motors help out, etc) so I would expect excellent reliability from these vehicles.

I still have to spend more time with this car. The A/C doesn't tend to be a huge draw when it comes to affecting mileage on EV's, but an elevated fan speed can definitely change that. I expect that on this car, the engine may run if it needs that elevated fan speed. I also expect remote starting to "potentially" run the engine, so always remote start it outside, and not in a closed garage. I need to spend a lot more time with this vehicle to be able to give more specific answers.

Bummed that the Tow Rating of the Sorento keeps dropping. 3500lb > 2500lb > now 2000lb. Is this from the added weight of features? Are they being more honest now? have they reduce the frame/suspension sturdiness in favor of road handling?? How is the drive when towing at capacity? The NEW Grand Cherokee coming out on the 29th will be an interesting comparison.
@BrantfordKia
@BrantfordKia 2 жыл бұрын
The Grand Cherokee is more of a Telluride comparison, it's got a 5000 lb tow capacity. The reality is that the Sorento should be rated for 3500 lbs. 5000 was a LOT for the previous generation V6, and to be honest, if you were towing a big boat around town, it was fine, but a big RV across the country wasn't the best with the old Sorento. 3500 makes sense for this size of vehicle, but yes, the tow rating is likely lower because of a couple of things. The added weight definitely plays a factor, but also the fact that the actual gasoline engine is just a 1.6 litre turbo engine. That's exceptionally good towing capacity when you look at it that way.

Another question. I'm having trouble deciding between the telluride and this phev. Been doing alot of research, I'm thinking it won't matter too much since I like to drive and take trips, although I do stay home alot and just drive around the city. But someone was test driving this phev on KZfaq and said after 20miles or so an hour (not sure what that is in km) it uses gas. So is that correct, you have to drive slow to stay in EV mode? What car would you choose ? I know you have an EV you said. I'm concerned that gas vehicles will lose value soon as I hear they are trying to phase them out by 2030.
@BrantfordKia
@BrantfordKia 2 жыл бұрын
What I would choose shouldn't influence you. I'm far more concerned in making sure that YOU choose the right vehicle for you, instead of you choosing the right vehicle for ME. I think they're both different, and if you can, you should definitely drive both. I've driven our PHEV with no issues on purely electric power around town, on country highways, and on multi-lane high speed highways, so if it was turning on for someone, it wasn't because of the speed, it was because of something else. To be fair, if you give it a LOT of gas pedal, the gasoline engine will turn on, but I was able to get on the highway and drive, without an issue, without using gasoline power. Which one is best for you? It will depend on if you need towing capacity, a larger vehicle that seats up to 8 people? Those are two solid reasons to choose the Telluride. For a lot of people the Sorento PHEV is a zero compromise alternative to a gasoline SUV.

I'm not sure if the 12 volt battery charges without the engine running (I would think it does, but I don't know) so I'll try to look into things and learn what I can. Any Sorento PHEV owners that can explain the fuel/EV settings? There’s EV, which is self explanatory. There is also a hybrid setting and an automatic setting. My question is what’s the difference between the automatic setting and the hybrid setting.? Automatic seems to adjust from using the electric motors over to gasoline depending on the type of driving you’re doing, but the hybrid setting appears to do the very same thing. How are the hybrid and automatic settings different from one another? Does the hybrid setting not draw any power from the electric motors at all? Any input would be appreciated. Thx.

You’ve probably figured it out by now, but Hybrid forces the engine on most of the time. It minimally uses battery capacity. Auto somehow determines when to engage Hybrid. It probably uses up all EV and then switches to Hybrid mode.

I don't know how to measure off-roading advantages in percentages, but we do have two drive modes that you don't have. They're called terrain modes here, and they are Mud and Sand modes. @BrantfordKia
@BrantfordKia 2 жыл бұрын
@@jlsteeves8463 I'll have more information on the PHEV Santa Fe soon. The pricing is a tough one though. In Canada there is a government incentive for PHEV's that have a model starting under $45,000 and not exceeding $55,000. So there is a reason that these are priced like they are. It's a decision to hit these price points, and in the case of the EX model for Kia, it's clearly priced at that level because of that incentive. So seeing a Calligraphy at a certain price point would involve a complete different company (Kia Canada and Hyundai Canada are separate companies) having to make decisions about price points based on a number of factors.

That's an interesting one. In theory, I think I agree with you, but there are a few things to consider. Adding a PHEV to a vehicle increases the purchase price, and in the Santa Cruz, the extra weight could take away from payload capacity, and towing capacity. On that vehicle, those things might matter more than to the average SUV buyer. So you'd be paying more for a vehicle that gets better mileage, but may have less capability. I hope they bring it out, but it will be interesting to see if the market is "truly" interested in that. If it was just more money, it would be a no-brainer, but the potential loss of capability is the big question mark.
