In this episode I find large Speckled Trout in their winter pattern. Deeper water, colder weather, way up a creek, but still chomping! The opinions I express in this video are not necessarily factual, just my personal observations. Thanks for watching and subscribing!

The biggest trout I have personally landed was just over 7 pounds on a top water plug, zara spook. The biggest trout I have ever almost landed was at least 10 pounds, fishing from the bank in the middle of the creek at about 9am in the dead of the winter. It was so clod that morning that there was patches of ice in the creek where the sun couldn't touch. I was using a Mirrolure 52 series 21 color. I got the fish to the bank and as I was bending over to grab him he made one last splash and cut off my 20 pound leader and floated about 4 feet off the bank to give me one last look as he submerged with my Mirrolure still in his lip. Took me awhile to get over that one! Great video man!

Good stuff! Couple questions if the trout like it deep why are they hitting a bait 2 feet ( minnow on a cork) 2. what size are the minnows ?
@haltysalty7537
@haltysalty7537 7 ай бұрын
Large shiners. Fished on slip bobber, set the stop at whatever depth you want, the bait falls to that depth and the bobber stops on the slip knot. I was fishing at 5-6 ft minnow depth in this vid

AH! Makes sense ! I suck at artificial so I think i’m gonna fish Blounts creek this way soon.
@haltysalty7537
@haltysalty7537 7 ай бұрын
That would work. Sometimes you have to be patient with shiners but if there's a trout near by he'll eventually eat. Check out some videos on the slip bobber, it works at any depth. I like to keep the minnow a foot or two off the bottom. Good luck!

Awesome job! The quest for gator trout gets into your blood and few people will understand it. I tried fishing in a kayak for the first time this Fall and immediately fell in love with it and had to order one more suitable to fishing. Now I'm impatiently waiting for it's delivery. Thanks for the video and please be safe out there!

Another awesome video man. I’m a kayak angler located in the upper Chesapeake Bay, but have always appreciated the Pamlico Sound fishery and scenery. How far up in the rivers do the trout migrate to, during this time of year? And may I offer some advice? Wear a life jacket at the very least brother, especially in the winter time. Water temps are cold and can kill if one isn’t prepared. A drysuit would be preferable, to prevent you from full submersion in the case of falling in. You just never know what life’ll throw at ya. Anyway, keep the vids coming!

Tim, sometimes they'll go up surprisingly far if the winter is mild and rainfall is low. This winter I havnt heard many reported far up river. I hear you on the vest, you're right, 100%. I actually tried to squeeze into one the night before the trip but it wouldn't fit over all the clothes. A new life jacket is in order👍

Great session! You know WHERE to fish, and that is the most important factor of all! You also know WHAT to fish, and WHEN. Was that a Daiwa BG reel? I just bought one for inshore saltwater lure fishing (and to double as a bass and kayak carp setup). I've got a 7' 6" TFO medium power fast action rod coming as well. Hoping to get into some reds and trout this year! Curious--do you use the same rod for bait and lure fishing, or do you have different setups? Are you using circle or J hooks? Based on some of your other videos, I'd guess circles. At any rate, thanks for making and sharing your videos and sharing your thoughts on why the trout and in that creek! Please be careful out there--an unplanned dip can be fatal this time of year!

Thanks Joe. My main bobber set up is an older Penn Fierce II, I've always loved the loud drag on that reel. The other set up is a Diawa Exceler 2500 on a Fenwick HMX medium light-fast, good all around rod. You'll love that TFO, good rods! Yes, circle hooks always for me.

Watched your video with the big diesel minnow. I got some 5” Spark Shad from Megabass. I have been tearing up bass on the megabass dark sleeper the blog trout truth had a show on using the dark sleeper for big winter trout. The Spark Shad has similar colors and profile except bigger. I tried an owner 4/0 weighted screw hooks Ian going to order some 7/0 from Amazon to have better gap for hook ups.

I just moved to NC within the last 2 years. I grew up fishing lakes and freshwater rivers. Im having a hard time finding the trout. I generally fish just outside of Washington with very little luck. Have you had any luck around Washington???
@haltysalty7537
@haltysalty7537 2 жыл бұрын
Nick, thanks for watching! Some winters the trout will migrate up river as far as Washington. This year I've heard of very few. Try fishing down river further, Blounts Creek, Goose Creek, Bath, Pungo Creek, Belhaven. You'll see other boats fishing these areas.

@haltysalty7537 2 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. I've definitely seen gar roll in other places. In this spot and a few others I have have actually seen the trout roll when in my boat. But some of them could be gar too. Trout swim with gar😉
