Sunfyre being the only one who ever loved Aegon is so sad.

Please don't get me wrong, Aegon is an awful person. But the fact that he was capable of loving his son and his dragon makes his story even more tragic in a way. It showed us that if he had been raised by loving parents and grandparents who were attentive to his needs, provided discipline/structure, and taught him how to govern, he may have actually turned out to be a decent young man. I think the potential for it was there. 💔

We barely saw Sunfyre but that quick scene with him and Aegon greeting each other really set me up to start crying when he fell from the air screaming... And when Meleys looked back at Rhaenys with Vhagars teeth in her neck I BROKE.

Meleys’ last look at Rhaenys was so heartbreaking. It was like she was saying I’m sorry and goodbye. They did a great job with Rook’s Rest.

VHAGAR is so large and doesn’t have agility. Tim is right. Silence is her weapon. Her wing span is so large once she’s up she can glide - as if in stealth mode. Shes quiet and the sneak attack is formidable and deadly! Tim is spot on with that thinking! She’s like a Klingon war ship! Appearing out of nowhere!

Loved rhaenys/meleys giving each other that, “Once more into the fray, old friend” look before they hooked back around

Daemon wouldn’t eat the ( possibly ) poisoned beans, but he’ll drink a mystery juice given by a mysterious woman who knows a little too much about the inner workings of his own mind, and who just happens to intrigue him 😂🤦‍♂️

Last night was like watching three doggos that you love beyond words try to fight each other to the death. It was heartbreaking.

Seeing the sheer scale of Vhagar as she came gliding in over the trees. Don’t even want to imagine being a ground troop in that situation. Horrifying

Sunfyre is so cute, feel so bad for the dragons man they are wonderful creatures and animated very well. Aegon is being played masterfully. You have so much sympathy for him.

Visenya was the most contentious of Aegon's sisters with his rule. And at the time, Vhagar was the smallest dragon. So yeah it makes total sense that Visenya would have trained Vhagar to do sneak attacks. There's simply no other way Vhagar would have ever stood a chance against Balerion.

When Aemond discovers the prophecy carved into the dagger, will he misinterpret it and believe that he is the prince that was promised Great episode. Great stream!

The reason Rhaenys didn't leave might be bc she feels responsible for not burning down Aegon when she had the chance at the end of season 1. She might be fighting from the perspective of she can't defeat Vhagear but she can damage and weaken Vhaegar. It looked like Maelys was saying sorry to Rhaenys. 😭

Alicent points to herself when she tells Aegon he should seek "our" council. Just like Cole did in season one. And Nana laying in the ferns of Endor was everything. Great Stream!

When she turned around I was thinking about when she told Daemon “it’s not my war to start” and in her head I imagine her saying to herself “it is mine to finish”. Not that killing Nana and Aemond would outright end the war but it would tip the scales majorly in the favor of the blacks.

This aftershow podcast has influenced me to the point that when Vhagar showed up onscreen I was like "oh no it's Nana ..."

I knew it was coming but nothing prepared me for seeing Meleys and Rhaenys go down. In the last 15 minutes I was just sobbing 😔😭😭 Also poor Sunfyre😢

It was fascinating to see Aemond speaking High Valyrian, but mostly because I automatically hear Japanese 😂 Thanks to Glidus

ETA: 25:19 they had NO RIGHT making Vhaegar look like a giant puppy as she flipped back to the ground when Aemond was like "not yet," Adorable Eldritch beast is not an ok combo lol Rhaenys should have been queen, and none of this would have had to happen. She has been one of my favorite women in fiction since I first read her story and her conclusion was done justice. She was such a a woman and she would have been a brilliant monarch. I also think that there was so escaping that death. The trap had been sprung and she fell for it. She may have escaped Vhaegar, but Meleys would have been out of the fight if not crippled looking at that leg- and instead of running she wounded Vhaegar and DECIMATED the usurper and his dragon. She made her choice, and she paid the price.

My theory is that all the history books moved by Aegon will be sparred from Baelor burning them. The literature that Aegon moved from his living quarters is the same literature discovered by Aerys I Targaryen.

For tose who wonder about Vhagar making surprise chomps: she is the only dragon who doesnt make regular dragon calls. All others announce themselves, Nana dont make no noise.

I think part of what played into Rhaenys’s decision to turn back is a kind of atonement for all the hell she was getting from Daemon about not taking team Green out last season. She like Rhaenyra was on that “I will not be the one to start war”. Now that war is determined, she does not leave the field.

this whole episode really gutted me. i feel for aegon SO MUCH every time alicent talks to him, the scene with sunfyre being the only thing that's made him truly smile since being with his son, absolutely HURTED.

I praised Garth before watching the episode and got all teary eyed because of how awesome the battle was. It was as brutal as a dragon fight should be. The dragons' blood boiling, as it should. The clawing and biting instead of just fire breathing... Harrenhal and Alys being spooky as hell. God damn, what an amazing episode!

Honestly I think the only logical explanation for Rhaenys turning around to face Vhagar was that she underestimated Vhagar. Primarily Vhagar's speed despite her age, and battle experience. When Meleys and Vhagar fly at one another, Meleys ducks underneath Vhagar, as if Rhaenys' plan was to dodge at the last second, then pivot around to go for Aemond. Meleys was known to be faster than Vhagar. It was a plausible plan. But Vhagar times her grapple with Meleys perfectly, and keeps Meleys grappled as she tries to burn Rhaenys. Additionally, they were too low to the ground. In my opinion, bigger dragons are actually more dangerous when flying lower, with less room for a smaller dragon to fly circles around them. Plus when much higher up, all the smaller dragon has to do is go for its opponent's wings and let gravity do the rest. But Vhagar was low enough that she could tank the fall damage. But if Meleys had engaged from higher up Vhagar's own mass could be turned against her. Finally, once she hits the ground, Vhagar DOES. NOT. STOP. She doesn't take a moment to compose herself. She knows she has to move, IMMEDIATELY. But instead of taking off right away, which would cause the gusts of wind from her wings to clear away her cover, she uses the dust and smoke and runs for the trees to give Meleys the slip. No way Aemond recovered from an impact like that so fast, especially when he was probably coughing up dust and smoke. That was purely Vhagar operating on instinct. This allowed for the surprise attack. You can tell when Rhaenys circled back the final time that she's surprised Vhagar isn't still on the ground recovering from the fall. She was probably expecting an easy opening to dive bomb Aemond. I think the biggest takeaway is that Vhagar is the biggest dragon, but she fights as if she isn't the biggest dragon, relying on agility and surprise whenever she can. This is probably because for most of Vhagar's life, Balerion was the tank of their squad. He could get away with entering every fight head on. She couldn't.

I think Rhaenys went back for many reasons, but in essence she is fighting for her second chance at being queen (by proxy). I think she sees Rhaenyra’s coronation as righting the wrong done to her in the great council of 101. The idea of Westeros having a Queen ruler finally.

Vhagar is so alligator-like.. though she looks more akin to a komodo dragon. Edit: after some searching, Vhagar's combat strategy also aligns with that of a komodo dragon since they use stealth and ambush despite their size too, and are even known to lie silently in wait for long periods of time when in search of prey, using foliage as camoflauge. Vhagar is very komodo-coded.

I think the moment Rheanys went back was also partially because Melys was already injured and looked at her with puppy dog dragon eyes, and she realized it was best to go out in a literal blaze of glory..great stream as always, Tim and Dave as usual, and costume co. was great as well!

I felt so bad for Sunfyre, it was his first battle and he got completely shredded by the big experienced dragons :(

I was ready for war i wasnt ready for HOTD war. Unless someone mentions this in the last half hour no one mentioned how upset Rheanys looked and all i could think about was that the greens are her kin too. When Sunfyre first got raked it was just a progressive downhill battle of snot sobbing for me 😫 it is going to take a lot for me to continue to get through these drawn out dragon injury and deaths 😢

RIP to the magnificent queens: Rhaenys, the Queen who never was, and Meyles, the red queen. I suppose we can not know what exactly Rhaenys thought before she chose to turn back and fight Vhagar, but I think she knew it was only going to get worse from there on out as the dragons fought dragons.

I have yet to formulate my full thoughts on this episode, but I will say, my main takeaway was: I NEVER thought I'd ever feel anything for Aegon II...but kudos to Tom GC bc he's been absolutely killing his role & I just felt bad/sad/empathy for him. Just wanted to give him a hug 🫂 lol & stop him from taking Sunfyre out to battle. & yeah, ppl keep mentioning it, that scene where he's just so happy & Sunfyre is happy to see Aegon. Such unconditional love between them. So fckn TENDER 🥹...instant tears bc I knew where it was all going.

For me the most immediate reason for Rhaenys going back to battle was because Rhaenyra "tried everything" before launching into war. So Rhaenys had to try. She also had the chance once to end this before it began and didn't take it. She already lost her children... she knows how this war is going to end and maybe she wants to do her duty but not be there to see it. I think the battle scene showed well the level of destruction and horror of a war with dragons. And to know that more is coming is.... great! I guess 😅

That was cruel and uncalled for the way Alicent treated Aegon and she is on part responsible for Aegon rushing to the battle and getting hurt. She's going to wish she had Aegon back after having to deal with her other son. Its like she more concerned with Cole than she is with her family.

The reason I assigned to Rhaenys for turning back to face Vhagar is that she just witnessed Aemond kinslay his brother, the firstborn son of the man who was King instead of her. I like to think Rhaenys saw right through Aemond by his delayed ambush and killsteal on Sunfyre and Aegon for what it was: a second son's attempt to seize power from the void. I see Rhaenys wanting to avenge her Kinged cousin's legacy and to rid the family of an active kinslayer.

Idk why Alicent didn't say "it's my monthly courses" to explain her absence from the council, needing heating rocks, looking pained, etc. It might not have scared off Larys but it would have made most men avoid her and not look too close at the evidence in the room.

Big battles are suppose to be blood pumping excitement, but seeing how Rhaenys and Meleys looked at each other before, during, and especially at the end, just got the tears flowing. Excellently done and Eve did a great job. Long live Rhaenys, queen who never was and should've been. She did her duty, even when staring death in the face.

If only Rhaenys had listened to Daemon and double teamed Vhagar.

Simply because my like for Gwayne Hightower grows with each scene he's in I have to question why Otto didn't attempt to use Alicent's friendship with Rhaenyra (before Viserys married Alicent of course) to match her with Gwayne.

Because of Grey and Obsidian Nights! I love getting to meet other people from the fandom. And now getting into your works and your theories and it just really broadens the whole universe. I 1000000% thought Aemond was trying to kill Aegon. Otherwise there is NO reason that Rhaenys and Meleys should have flown away from that while Aegon fell, presumably to death.

Watching Meleys died hurt way worse than Viserion for me because how much I was invested in Rhaenys & her bond with her dragon. Also with the fact being that Meleys is my favorite dragon and also the fact that she was first Alyssa's dragons who is one my favorite Targaryens

Rhaenys leaving was not an option. She leaves, that tells anyone supporting Team Black that dragons can’t help them, and they’ll leave them to die at the behest of the Greens. She stays, she tells the people that they are willing to fight, and risk their dragons lives as well as their own for this cause. Leaving wasn’t an option. It was, strike at Vhagar as hard as you can, and she took out the king and his dragon on her way. She essentially martyred herself and Maelys for the cause.

Vhagar is an "ambush predator", just like one of those huge crocodiles in Australia...perfectly camouflaged, slow and stealthy until the time for an attack presents itself when -- even with her size -- she can put on that quick burst of speed and chomp you before you know she's there. And just like a croc, this is not something you want to take on if she has ANY cover to hide behind. When you see a croc sunning itself on your lawn, you know you can approach its blind spots, that you can get behind it and have a better chance of getting the best of it (not a perfect chance, because they can whip those tails pretty fast, but a much better chance than approaching the end with the teeth on it). But if you DON'T see the croc on your lawn but you know it likes to hide out at the water's edge where it's harder to see, basically you just don't approach the water and think you are going to be able to take on that animal. Vhagar is the same way. The only way to deal with her is over a wide open field...not high up where she can hide in clouds, or down too low where she can use castles or cliffs or large rock formations for cover. You have to attack her from low underneath and behind, where Aemond can't see you (because sitting atop Vhagar and trying to see directly beneath her is like straddling the top of an Airbus A380 and trying to see the landing gear. You'd probably have a better chance if you come from his left side where he has no peripheral vision. It's gotta take 2 dragons so her attention is divided. I can't see any other way to bring her down.

Rhaenys knew she would not return from this battle before she and Meleys left Dragonstone. You could see it in her when she said goodbye to her husband and in the way she spoke to her dragon before they took flight. ❤ The Queen Who Never Was will always be The Queen Who Should Have Been to me.

I think Rhaenys turned back because she does harbor some of that guilt of not taking these people out when she had the chance.

I always figured that Rhaenys and Meleys helped out in the Stepstones, considering it was partially her husband’s war and the Triarchy was impacting her family’s business on the seas.

So how is Ameomd and Cole conspiring then doing the opposite of what Ageon commands NOT treason???

Attacking Vhagar is worth it because she’s the one thing standing between you and victory, and because she’s so old-any stress or strain will take her out of action longer than a young dragon. Rhaenys bought them all time and probably wore Vhagar down so she didn’t barbecue the castle

Everybody forgets that Otto and Alicent didn't do ANYTHING when Aegon was younger to groom him to be the king, he has never been taught what to do. They waited 20 years to start trying to teach him what to do, once his personality was set and he was on the throne.
