In today's session, we finish with some final tips for Milky Way and Astro photography, as well as getting to grips with challenging contrast scenes in Landscape images.
We cover split white balances in scenes, fixing overcast skies, and explore the use of the Linear Response Curve as an alternative to "Auto" when editing an image in Capture One.
** Please note the first switch to the Linear Response Curve was accidentally offset by the levels adjustment we'd previously made - that should not be factored in, and is why we go back to the curve once the levels were reset to show the true difference between this and "Auto". **
Join us for live editing in Capture One - with your own images -
We recommend requesting the HD option from KZfaq for full 1080p screen captures.
To submit your image for a future session, head to www.paulreiffe... for more info.
And don't forget, the discussion continues on our Behind The Scenes Facebook group: / paulreifferlive

It's a tough one Robert - but I'm often reminded of that phrase... "just because we CAN do something, doesn't mean we SHOULD"...!

I always learn so much on these sessions, not just about Capture One but I get so much from just understanding how you look at a photo when you're editing

Paul, thanks for Editing my shot, much appreciated. I am sorry that I could not watch live, I need to block out calendar time for the live session and avoid those pesky meetings 😊. I have learnt something new about Base Characteristics for high contrast scenes, I will keep that in mind when I am editing in future. It was quite overall quite a ‘green' shot, and maybe the town could have been a bit more prominent, but hey that’s the choice I made at the time 😉.

Thanks Paul. My two take-aways from this are that firstly, I have to be prepared to leave shadows darker than I often do in images such as the cascade/waterfall shot. Thanks for giving me a nudge. Secondly, I've left ICC profiles untouched in the past. I have a vague idea of what they are, but haven't thought of them as a means to deal with some difficult images. Thanks to this video, I can and will give them a try.

Thank you for the tutorials! Cool tip about stretching the left side of the image using the keystone tool.

Second this - just a brilliant idea. This works in a fair few of my images

Great session, as usual - many thanks! Each individual session has good value but there is great cumulative value of these (and your ProTips) videos - like being on a Post Grad Capture One course!!

Great session, again! Thanks a lot, Paul. Regarding Base Characteristic Curves I use a preset on import to change to Linear. So, I always start working from a linear curve.

Thank you so much - I was so excited when I saw my photo show up. Love that you gave tips on taking the shot, and not just the editing. Part of my problem was I forgot to bring my reading glasses to really see well when I zoomed in trying to check focus. ;-) But I will most certainly keep your focusing tip in mind next time I'm out there.

Honestly, the number of shots I have from star shooting which are “slightly out” - when I thought they were spot on during the night...! It’s one of the reasons that I still shoot one longer and one shorter each time, even when I’m sure I got it bang on!

regarding film curves: another option is to make a style with that curve and apply the style during import of the images

I always "walk out" with something after one of your sessions. I was not a fan before I started watching you. Also, I think there's a way to set reminders on KZfaq, I've seen some of the KZfaqrs do that for their live sessions and then participants can choose to get notified when it's about to start so they can attend.

I didn't catch this live so I couldn't ask a question, perhaps you could answer this in the next video - in the image from Patagonia (about 16 minutes in), you added two gradient masks and altered the white balance in both. What would happen if you went back to the background layer and tweaked the white balance? Does that have priority, does it have any effect, do the new layers override the background layer? Thanks. Great tutorials by the way.

Hi Patrick, They overwrite. So if your background WB is 5000, and you put a new filled layer on top at 7000 - it's 7000. If you now change the background to 6000, the filled layer will still result in 7000 (it's not a delta or cumulative, it's an absolute value). Of course, if you have a gradient on there - then the transition will be from whatever was underneath to whatever is on top - ie: that would change from being 5000 transitioning to 7000, to becoming 6000 transitioning to 7000 :-)
