my wife and I visited UY many many times over the previous 20 years as Canadians who spent 14 years in New Zealand and returned to the Okanagan valley in 2007. Flash forward to 2012, and perhaps 1 cold winter too many, the property market peaked and we sold our house and acreage in Cherryville and August 5th, 2022 moved, shipped a container of memories and our 6 rescue cats boarded our private flight to Uruguay. We wanted a quiet private life on the empty beach we stood on in 2010 on one of our tiki tours that were 2 months or longer through all of the country. Department of Rocha 5 km East of La Pedrera is where we purchased a modern secluded beach house. Agree with your take on this country ticked all the boxes required for a quiet retirement. Health care is affordable by all US standards in Canada it was free so a cost was incurred but relative. The budget here is far higher than your lifestyle in MVD but our lifestyle is very different. Place and price in Uruguay for most budgets. From Punta Del Este and Jose Ignacio through to La Paloma prices are higher as they are resort towns, and most business owners open from December 1st through March then close up. Great choices for all foods and all tastes. We love it

BTW, mutualistas are not the public system. Uy has a mixed care type of healthcare, public, mutualista, high end private. Mutualistas are comparable to a healthcare concierge system here. Uy is more expensive, but it's a welfare state, so your basic needs will be taken care of regardless of where you lived before, specifically reliable healthcare bc it's considered a human right. Uy has great preventative healthcare. There a few expats in Piriapolis, you should reach out to them.

Good info.May I add Uruguay together with Sweden are the two countries that have the most readers per capita in the world, the enormous amount of bookstores in Montevideo, will attest to that. There is no illiteracy in Uruguay. Health care s well as Primary ,Secondary and Tertiary education ( University) are public services, that is, they are free. Of course you can opt for private if you like. All utilities, gas, energy, communications, water are public, not privatised ( in essence owned by all Uruguayans).

Interesting. Uruguay is definitely NOT one of the South American countries that are generally mentioned when people in the US talk about immigrating to another country, so it's good to hear from your guest. She provides information and a perspective that is hard to find elsewhere on KZfaq. But let me make sure I understand this correctly: from the moment you get your cedula (temporary residency visa) until the moment you get your permanent residency visa, you can't leave the country without express permission? And it can take 15-18 months to get your permanent residency visa? Whew! That's a long time to have to stay put!

Uruguay is 3 times as expensive as Buenos Aires, and even more than than the smaller cities of Argentina. I was in Montevideo two weeks okay and now I am traveling in Argentina. Huge difference in costs. Montevideo is not for the budget minded. And there are no second tier cities of any size in Uruguay.

Argentina is definitely less expensive, but their economy and currency are a hot mess. Political instability adds to the conundrum, especially with the recently elected "Trump Lite" president. Overall, show I enjoyed it, just like your other videos. I didn't like the in your face pushing the LGBTQ agenda. If one chooses not to be with GOD, it's their choice. People choose where they want to be after we die. Just like my comments, it didn't need to be in this video. You didn't have much choice into regards to her comments except cutting it out. Overall, watching other videos on this location, I'm still interested in visiting. Sorry, I've offended some with my comments. I was offended by her comments. So angry face back at the ones that will put on my comments. Anyway, you're not allowed to do that because it's hate. For me, I dislike that people don't choose to have a relationship with God, which is their choice. You can always change your mind even though you have been fixed before and now are broken. That's one reason we seek God to be fixed and have that relationship. Good day.

We are here in Uruguay right now and we wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. When walking on the horrible sidewalks which need A LOT of care no one looks up to say hi because you’re to busy dodging the pot holes and dog poop which is everywhere. Food is terrible and people are not friendly.

OR perhaps is your obnoxious nature that comes out of every single word you just typed? If sidewalks are horrible you've landed in the wrong side of town my friend.

YES! The dog poop is horrible. That is not a problem here in Buenos Aires. It is not even a problem in Brazil, which can be really nasty. Yet. Brazilians do clean up after their pets. However, the people are very nice and I never ate a bad meal there, though it is not as good as the food in Argentina, which is a fraction of the price.

You are NOT going to live comfortably in Uruguay for $650. I'll stay in Ecuador. less expensive and better weather. Don't need anyone here vouching for you. Both my temporary and permanent visas took three months. She's saying rent is $500-$1,000 a month. How can you live for $650 a month. #CLICKBAIT

Perhaps she shares a house with others or owns it? Ecuador isn't a very safe place for gringos and has gotten worse. The political stability of Ecuador is nonexistent. But if you're happy there goodluck.

Uruguay has a better quality of life than almost any country in the world, with its own house and earning a relatively good salary. Except for the insecurity, it is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. I live between Madrid and Oslo, greetings.

It's a requirement (for a retiree, at least) to buy a house for your own use for a minimum of USD100,000 or you have to buy that sum of government debt in the form of a bond.

That's a lot of mucho BS to live in a lousy climate. (?) Not enough English there for me either. Simply not quite enough advantages for such a giant load of crap they put you through ! (for me & I'm sure many others) > Ridiculous priced food to eat out and a poor selection is enough to keep me out of the country !!! -- Perhaps Argentina 'now' is a better deal - with their new President ? -- Sounds like she's made ''lemonade'' in order to live there ?
