I was delighted to welcome writer, photographer, film-maker and TV director Bob Quinn to Live Irish Myths in Conversation. Bob is perhaps best known for 'The Atlantean', a television documentary series made for RTÉ in the 1980s, which was followed by his book 'The Atlantean Irish'. In his work, Bob has asked many questions about our maritime heritage, and our links with the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Near East. I enjoyed our fascinating conversation, and indeed the many questions it provoked from the audience at the end.

Bob Quinns Atlantean is my favourite book of all time - every chapter leads me on a new journey of discovery - I think I've googled every name in it at this stage - finding other books and writings of the people mentioned - forever grateful - great to see the man in good health.

Very interesting comment on Donegal Gaelic/Irish from Bob Quinn. I'm from the Scottish Highlands and was holidaying in Donegal a few years back, where, at the breakfast table one day, three Irish learners from around Dublin were sitting at the next table. They tried speaking to the bean an tigh and she replied in Gaelic/Irish which I could largely understand but they couldn't. Two conversations with local people revealed they always listened to Radio nan Gaidheal, from Inverness, rather than Radio na Gaeltachta. It demonstrates the importance of ancient historical links and the nature of the wider Gaidhealtachd/Gaeltacht, from Kerry to Caithness.

very interesting. i do believe there is a lot of truth in the traditional irish myths & the annals. i also believe that scandinavia is also another key to the origin of the irish & that it too once had “celtic” settlements. (i put “celtic” in inverted commas due to it being a controversial term) also the term “partholón” used in the irish annals for the neolithic peoples of ireland. it’s interesting that there is a a cave in the basque country which also has this name:- www.eurekalert.org/multimedia/pub/98512.php i also believe there are ancient connections between the indigenous traveling communities of ireland, scotland & norway which unlike the rest of europe are not roma but indigenous.

Funnily enough i was listening to some Gaelic music and i had said to the missus that it sounded similar to music from the middle east
@danythrinbell1596
@danythrinbell1596 2 жыл бұрын
ha ha ha ha do you think the music from today got something todo with middle east ? no it has is some way like berbers egyptian dance and speak the western europe got influences from anatolia , in so many periods because people used like today go and come back to they place of origin around 11.000 years ago , atlantida disappeared and a diluvio took form all the people that escaped from that were the ones that populated western europe and balcans greece even anatolia , armenia after 3000 years of shots of that people returned to place of origin not knowing that they were from there ( anatolian farmers )already admixed with another populations since then lots of tribes did moved to europe taking the way through egypt libya tunisia algeria morocco admixing with others that they encountered, moved to iberia from iberia up to england and ireland, the last tribes that arrived in western europe were the phoenicians , that were a lot of tribes canaanites philistines , hittites , egyptian , hurrians , etc etc , , there is lots of masters talking about , i can recommend a book JP . MALLORY , ALSO QUIINS BOOK IS VERY INTERESTING , but there is so many like humboldt, and so many georgian scholars i will give you a link to a scholar that studied the first language the mother of all languages but you need to be a specialist in linguistics to understand what he deciphered

Hi Padraig. I believe Bob was referring to a review of Martin Brennan's book by archaeologist Clare O'Kelly (wife/widow of Michael J. O'Kelly) which was, to put it mildly, a scathing and no-holds-barred appraisal of the book.

@@mythicalireland Thanks Anthony, I did recall the line 'I never so much as had a sighting of him, as the bird watchers say'. There may be a question there for Geraldine Stout, to see if Brennan's work is still regarded with such contempt.

i remember reading that there was an influx of caucasian d.n.a, around 1500bc around north africa , may be the north african megaliths are the neolthic peoples mirgrating out of europe because of the arrival of the beaker people . possibly the reason we dont find neolithic d.n.a. in western europe today

@@danythrinbell1596 hi mate the latest studies show that indigenous people of britian and ireland pre 20th centry on the whole had 65% beaker d,n,a, 8% neolithic 6% mesolthic etc , with the cultural ,language and religious changes suggest a population replacement . my point was if the mealithic site in north africa was later than irish/british mealithic culture could this show a mirgration. theres is plenty of surviving neo d,n,a, in northern spain , sardinia and all through the mediterranean, perhaps you have ancestors from them areas

He confuses "Megalithic" with "Mesolithic" multiple times.....as for his claims that agriculture began in the Sahara there is simply no evidence (the cave paintings he refers to don't show any semblance of farming) as for his claims that the Irish language is 5000 years old.....the man is dismissed as a quack by mainstream academia for good reason.
