Sports fandom is about the highs and lows. If you can’t get invested and feel emotion during big moments, that’s an issue with you, not the fans who can. Furthermore, I said throughout the year this team wasn’t going anywhere, it’s not a conclusion I came to after Pasta scored. They’re just obviously not built in a way that’s conducive to winning in the playoffs. The core flat out doesn’t work, you’d have to be an imbecile to think it can at this point. Someone has to go, and Marner is the one that makes sense by process of elimination. It doesn’t mean he’s a bad player or that the other core members are flawless.

Matthews numbers do not take a significant drop when Marner isn’t on his wing. If anything, sometimes it helps when he moves off him. They get stale together and it’s very easy for a defense to key in on Matthews in the playoffs, because Mitch’s game is exclusively on the perimeter and he’s not a willing enough shooter. Their duo has been shut down time and time again in the playoffs. And we’ve got plenty of evidence that shows Matthews can play with other players and be just fine. It’s also way more difficult to replace a number one C than it is to replace a scoring wing. Matthews is quite literally the last player they should trade. Next is Nylander. He has been the most consistent playoff performer of the core 4 throughout this Leafs era. He’s not a perfect player, he turns it off at times in the regular season, and his defensive game isn’t elite, but it’s at least average. He doesn’t freeze up when the playoffs come around. There’s a reason he scored all Leaf goals in game 6 and 7. For a team who can’t get it done in the playoffs, it would be lunacy to trade your only consistent playoff performer. Tavares, we’ll, age has caught up to him. He’s lost a step and he didn’t have much of one to lose in the first place. The effort and details are still there in his game, but he just can’t keep up athletically anymore to be a top 6 player. With a salary of 11M, the Leafs will have to retain to move him, and then find a replacement for their number 2 Centre spot, which will end up being a net negative on their cap situation. Trading him requires subsequent moves and the Leafs have zero leverage in that situation. Then you have Mitch, who has elite offensive skill and is an excellent penalty killer. On top of that, he is expiring after next season. The issue with Marner is he just can’t handle the pressure of being a Leaf and his game does not translate to the playoffs with this Leafs team at all. Too perimeter-centric, not enough assertiveness, has some of the worst body language in the entire league and that’s no exaggeration. The thing with Mitch is he will work out on a different team. He’s a happy go lucky guy who likes to fly around, make cute plays and get coddled as much as possible. He will do great in a market where there’s less media pressure and with a different mix of players. He doesn’t like the spotlight. It’s no accident he dodged the media after game 7 as an alleged assistant captain, threw his gloves on the bench, rolled his eyes countless times when things didn’t go his way, left the bench to throw a tantrum in the tunnel and came back, and it goes on and on… he doesn’t enjoy it here, not anymore, but he’s a good player. The Leafs can get stuff for him, they get the most cap space back, what he does is entirely replaceable, and he’s the player who fits this team and its aspirations the least. The best move for the franchise is to move on from that player.

Clip after clip on social media, shows Leaf fans, decked out in Maple Leaf jerseys and hats, verbally tearing apart their team. Before games, during games and after games. Listen, I grew up a Red Sox fan. Been over 45 years and my whole childhood was filled with heartbreak, year after year.... Never did I talk about my team the way you guys talk about yours.
