Waylon and I were distant cousins. I saw him once at a family reunion a million years ago. I didn't have the heart to go over and introduce myself and shake his hand because "relatives" had Waylon surrounded and were hounding him for autographs. He gave me a little smile and nod across the room, as if to say, "Thank you for giving me some space." I heard this song for the first time last night in the movie "Crazy Heart." I had to come and watch Waylon sing it. Pretty damn impressive. Now I see what all the fuss was about.

Waylon was always smart. He saved the high octane stuff for his live shows, and did very few live recordings. If you wanted the unadulterated Waylon experience you had to see him live. And he never had trouble filling a venue. ... So, I admire him for being savvy, but I just plain love listening to his music, live or in the studio.

Knew his wife well but after he died. She was always so sweet and loved my Irish wolfhound. I’ve got a picture of the three of us somewhere. I had told her early in our friendship how much Waylon had influenced me. I grew up in Nashville but not in the music scene that many of the fathers of my friends were. My dad introduced me to Willie, Waylon and the boys music. It changed the whole way I saw my own city. After the mid 70s Texas was my Nashville and Nashville might as well have been Branson or fake Opryland. But that died an ugly death too. I may be one of the few Real nashvillians left today but my music came from Texas after Nashville died. And it was the outlaws that killed it! Thank hod someone did. I hate what this city has become with lower Broad such a bridal party shit show. Hank didn’t do it this way!

B to E!!!! Waylon only needed 2 chords to do my favorite Waylum song of all time.........and that includes many, many, many classic tunes. Don't forget his career was stalled for about 4-5 years when his "big brother" Buddy Holly died. Buddy believed in Waylon's singer songwriting ability, had just reunited with Joe B. and Jerry(The Crickets) and was going to tour England and Europe. When Waylon who was struggling playing bass on the tour when the music died said, "What about me?" Buddy said "I got it all figured out!! You're no bass player!! You're a singer songwriter like me!! I'm going to work with you and record your songs. You're going to open for Me, Joe B. and J.I. We're going to be your backup band. We all love ya!!! It'll be fun and by the end of the tour, you'll be a big star!!!" Buddy was always correct about music!!!! Waylon quoted Buddy often till the day he died.
