Everton, the OG rival to Liverpool especially in a late 70s to 80s. If we ignore the trophy and just look at point goal record of all time league on both team, Everton & LFC are still tight despite Everton are so underarchiver now. I hope Everton will be back to its glory for catching up their legacy. Very underrated club, beside Aston Villa

The 80s were a great time for Liverpool. Irregardless of who you supported, when the Tories and Thatcher were destroying the country, seeing the two Merseyside Clubs at their best was a great sight
Shame on the few nobheads that shouted out. Other than that, beautiful minutes silence. God bless those 97, and all those impacted by that awful tragedy. Football should be an escape from lifes problems, not where you go to lose your life. From a United fan🙏

Do you not think Aldridge was let go far too early still had a good three seasons left in him at the top level I always feel
@DaveWallerLFC4 жыл бұрын
There wasn't the same squad rotation then, and the decision was made that Rush & Beardsley was the first choice pair up front. From the club's point of view, the money offered by Real Sociedad was too good to turn down for a player not playing regularly and about to turn 31. From Aldridge's point of view, he wanted to be playing regularly. With hindsight, Beardsley missed quite a lot of games that season so Barnes played up front a lot, meaning Aldridge might have played if he'd stayed. Liverpool spent most of the money from the Aldridge sale on Ronny Rosenthal who, although he had a vital immediate impact, wasn't as good a player.
@simonforrest25224 жыл бұрын
@@DaveWallerLFC Still hurt me to see Aldo go though even though he was getting on..He was still razor sharp in front of goal and when he left Real Sociedad i was praying that we bought him back but he instead went to Tranmere..The understanding that Aldo, Barnes & Beardsley had was absolute dynamite and one of the most vivid football memories of my childhood

Both teams Liverpool and Everton players and supporters were a credit to Merseyside. Fantastic atmosphere and a great match that unfortunately did not go in Everton’s favour. Trevor Steven had a solid game, Big Nev despite conceding three times had an otherwise good game as he kept us in the match. McCall was excellent, Sharp and Cottee did not play as well as I would have hoped. My favourite player in general was Kevin Sheedy.

Aldridge and Rush did partner each other quite a bit 88-90, but it wasn't a natural blend. Both were better playing alongside Beardsley, who tended to play deeper and feed passes through to them, while drawing defenders out of the area to make space. Aldridge & Rush by contrast tended to make similar runs and rather got in each other's way, while there was no 'pully' between midfield and attack. See some of the drab performances on the way to the title in 89-90, when A & R were playing together. Despite becoming champions again that year, the rhythm and cohesion of the Liverpool attack was not quite what it was when either of them partnered Beardsley.

The team was questioning if it was right to play, but in the end it was such a huge tribute victory to the 96 just over a month after the greatest tragedy in English football. Even if the magnitude of the occasion was so great that it's forgivable, like John Barnes later described, it still somehow is awful to see that many fans invading the pitch again and again. However incited you were, that was not the moment to lose your head. It shows absolutely no respect or mindful reflection, only why there were high fences at many stadiums. The players obviously didn't appreciate it, and fans don't invade pitches anymore. I wonder what they think about watching themselves run around like mad men so many years after. It should be embarrassing at best.

Watching this reminds me of just how weak a link Grobelaar was, his stupidity was a constant reason for creating instability. Had we had Southall, I'm sure we would have won much more and with better scorelines......
@DaveWallerLFC2 жыл бұрын
This seems a bit over the top. Southall was probably the best keeper in the world at this time, but Grobbelaar was also a good keeper. His style of play - coming well out of his goal to catch crosses and out of his area to act as sweeper behind a back 4 that pushed up to play offside - was intended to prevent problems before they arose. It wasn't stupidity. He obviously made mistakes, but Paisley, Fagan and Dalglish thought he was good enough.
@mikelyons82882 жыл бұрын

McCalls offside under the offside rules of the day. Ref and Linesman missed that. Glad Pat Nevin never got his medal he was a wee rat. And to top it off Celtic stopped the deidco winning a treble that day. it was a great day watching the football back then.
@DaveWallerLFC4 жыл бұрын
Nicol is goalside of McCall at all times for the goal that made it 1-1, so I don't think McCall could be offside. If you meant the player on the line (Cottee?) who jumps over the shot, I think it would be harsh to disallow the goal for that under any interpretation, but I suppose in theory he is in an offside position.
