Having put in two very good performances against Freiburg and Wolves, West Ham approached the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Liverpool at Anfield with some confidence.
But all that confidence was removed instantly when the starting XI was announced, with David Moyes making a number of changes to his starting XI. Clearly he has one eye on Saturday's Premier League clash against Manchester United. The performance that followed complimented the line-up. Poor, weak and no up to standard. It was no wonder we were thrashed 5-1.
And it raises the question: has David Moyes' squad management been good enough this season? The likes of Ben Johnson, Thilo Kehrer and Pablo Fornals were all regular starters this season but have mostly been given sporadic appearances from the bench in 23/24. Johnson, for example, made only his third appearance of the campaign against Liverpool, and he was played out of position. How is he expected to put in a top-quality performance against Liverpool at Anfield with so few minutes under his belt?
So this week, James and Will debate the above in detail. Will refutes James' claims that Moyes' squad management, and inability to build a squad with strong depth, is costing us in games when first-team players need to be rested. Will, instead, believes it's just a case of the fringe players not being good enough anymore. What do you think?

I agree that Johnson was thrown under a bus by Moyes having been ignored all season but I actually thought he was our best player last night so it's a red herring to blame his selection.

I'm with James all day. Will seems to have complete myopia with regard to Moyes' terrible management of the squad. Other than alternating Zouma and Mavropanos (because Zouma's knee doesn't allow him to play twice a week) he flogs the other 9 outfield players match after match and they're probably all knackered. All the other players are ignored.

Top show and good analysis. Moyes has now put in place a recruitment structure that excludes David Sullivan. Hopefully this will mean that the squad is managed better in the future

Will, your Moyes love-in is embarrassing now. How can anyone defend him? Why aren't the back-up players any good? You answered your own question. Moyes has RUINED the following players - Benrahma, Ings, Cornet, Kehrer, Cresswell, Mubama, Fornals, Johnson and before that Lanzini. Anyone can see that each of these players were decent squad players. Moyes has sapped any confidence from them that they had. You say about Johnson, 2 years ago he was a regular and was playing well. Why isn't he now? 2 words - DAVID MOYES!! That prick needs to be sacked, NOW! I can't listen to this podcast anymore. Anyone who backs Moyes has lost all respect from other fans now.

@ballondorson488 I listen to Moyes in all the time. The guy is a dinosaur. I just can't listen to fans who defend him. As thankful to him as I am for a trophy, it's time for change. You can see the players aren't happy. Roll on the summer when he's gone! 🙏

Will is one of the few rational fans on KZfaq. Most others are blinded by their irrational dislike for Moyes. It's not worth arguing about it because those people decided they didn't want Moyes from the day he joined, it just took some time before they could feel justified to make it known. The facts aren't enough to convince them. He's useless because they say so and their mates agree.
