So cool! Thanks for posting! It is just awe inspiring to see these magnificent ships! I grew up on the water on Lake St Clair and remember my step father pointing out to me the first 1,000 footer and I was just mesmerized by it! Loved seeing the freighters too! @@vibewithmike thank you, Mike. Please forgive the spelling errors. Kelly & I traveled along the North shore. We bought smoked fish from a monger along that North shore. I was overwhelmed by the enormity of those freighters. I learned a mining lesson about "taconite", the rock ore that is iron ore. It was a fascinating trip to Deluth. Your video brought that happy time back for me. I thank you for that.

@@vibewithmike glad you asked. It was Fall, thus brisk. Yet, the mosquitos were still fearsome North of Deluth, in the cabin we stayed. Funny memory: My Kelly was from St. Paul, yet we lived South, in Kandas City, MO. We were late driving South to Deluth to catch the ore freighter coming-in. We got pulled-over while she was driving by the sheriff's deputy for speeding. When my Kelly spoke to the deputy, her North Minn accent emerged thick as Fargo and I chuckled to myself. He caught that she was KC but sounded Minn. She explained her St. Paul roots. She charmed him with her voice. He let her go. :-) We made the ship on-time anyways, don't cha know...

@hankfrankly7240
@hankfrankly7240 Жыл бұрын
Long and 2 short blasts on horns similar to train whistles? Must mean something?
@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike Жыл бұрын
Hank, I found this for you. Q: What do the different whistles mean? A: Different combinations mean different things. A long blast lasts three seconds. A short one lasts one. If we hear "long, short, long, short" from a boat, that means it requires us to lift the bridge. We'll answer with the same combination to acknowledge that we heard it. "Long, short, short" from a vessel basically means, "Hey, thanks for the lift." If we use it first, it's like, "Hey, nice boat." It's all nautical tradition. Then three "longs" and two "shorts" is called the captain's salute. Boats might use it if it's their first time here or their last time leaving. Five short blasts means "Stay away. Danger." The blasts are difficult to translate, like explaining to someone what "because" means.

Why didn't the bridge return the second salute?
@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike Жыл бұрын
The first salute is for the bridge. When there is a larger crowd a captain sometime will do it twice. The second is for the crowd and the Lift Bridge operator can see the crowd too and realizes that’s why there’s a second. However, I have seen/heard the bridge return the second salute in the past, so it comes down to which Lift Bridge operator is working. This is my best guess.
@aisle9
@aisle9 Жыл бұрын
@@vibewithmike The bridge op would return second salutes, sometimes a third, regularly last year. Not sure what changed, but I share your best guess that it depends on who's working that day.
