Fun Fact: Living Colour is the only rock group included in the Native Tongues hip hop collective. A cooperative known for their positive-minded, good-natured Afrocentric and socially conscious lyrics, and for pioneering the use of eclectic sampling and later jazz-influenced beats. Other core members include the Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Monie Love, Queen Latifa, Mos Def, Talib Kweli etc.

These guys are brilliant musicians. They went to Berklee at the same time as Dream Theater. They were completely socially conscious with empowering lyrics. Thanks for getting to them! As a young black kid, they showed me music has no boundaries. Also that jazz, blues, gospel and hip hop weren't my only expressive outlets. Vernon Reid was my guitar idol. To this day, most guitarists cannot play his parts correctly.

She saw them live like 6 times and I just remember her saying how underrated they were. I recognized how underrated they were a long time ago. In Southern California, it was kinda a "trend", in that if people saw you wearing one all the time, they assumed you were a surfer, which of cousre meant you were cool, lol! What I love about Living Color is that they appeared at a time when hair-bands ruled the day. But then - here came a band that suddenly put the entire rock/metal establishment on notice. And the best part - they were an all black metal band - and doing it even better than the white-boy hair bands. The groove, the energy, the attitude - instantly put so many metal posers of the time to shame. As a bonus, the rest of their album is mixed with a power amalgamation of rock, metal, funk, pop and reggae grooves that showed the wide range of musical talent these guys had. Kudos to Living Color for breaking open the door of rock and metal to everyone, regardless of race, who wanted to express themselves within the genre. Love you guys (and Lost in Vegas for being pioneers as well). 👍

And that was a mistake. They're not a metal band, dude. Their label tried to sell them as one, and that was the mistake. I think they would have had greater success had their label sold them differently. I bought the album when it came out. Cult of Personality, hardly considered a metal song, was the hardest song on the album. All the other cuts were funk and pop. I listened to it one time and then never picked it up again. That kind of genre just isn't my bag. They were very eclectic, a lot like the Chili Peppers and Faith No More, but no one is going to mistake the Chili Peppers for metal. Actual metal bands like Metallica and Megadeth were the ones who put the metal establishment on notice.

Their newer stuff is pretty good. Their catalog as a whole is sorely underrated. I also like the very punk rock philosophy behind a lot of their music, in that they don't shy away from political material. Like their recent reinterpretation of Biggie's "Who Shot Ya?" which is of course about gun violence. They're very much a protest band, not unlike Rage Against the Machine or Lamb of God.

This is still one of my all-time favorite bands. I used to play this as loud as I could from my 3rd floor dorm room in my fraternity in 1989. "Vivid" and "Time's Up", their first two releases are my two favorite albums. The musicianship and lyrical content are so powerful from this band. I guess you could technically call them a one hit wonder since "Cult" is by far their most famous song, but they have so many great ones! They brought so many influences into their songs:rap, metal, funk, calypso("Solace of You", one of my favorites!). This band just had so much talent I saw them live on the Rolling Stones' Steel Wheels tour in Cleveland, OH in 1990. Damn great show!

Trivia: Although he doesn't play on this track, Doug Wimbish joined Living Color later on bass. The notable thing about Doug Wimbish is that he was a member of the house band of Sugar Hill Records. He appears on many classic tracks including "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five and "White Lines" by Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel. Between Sugar Hill and Living Colour, he formed Tackhead (with both the drummer and guitarist from Sugar Hill Gang). Check out ANYTHING from Tackhead and you will be pleasantly surprised... (And if you want more, they backed up many groups on the On-U Sound label... Mark Stewart and Maffia, Fats Comet and countless others.) If things ever get back to normal and we are able to see live music again, don't miss a chance to see Doug Wimbish play... he is the Jimi Hendrix/Eddie Van Halen of the bass guitar.

Yes, this was their best known song. But...there are so many awesome songs on "Vivid" released in the mid latter 80's. Shame on those who don't dig deeper into it. Songs like "Desperate People" and " Open Letter To A Landlord" " are incredible and deserve a listen. "What's Your Favorite Color?" is funky as hell! Funny Vibe, Which Way To America, are musical tour de forces and Vocalist Corey Glover always delivers on the poignant lyrics and soulful inspired performances. They kick ass live too. If you want to have some fun... check out "Elvis Is Dead" on their follow up album "Type". There is footage of them performing it on The Arsenio Hall Show , it was awesome! They were not a one hit wonder "Glamour Boys" from the same release got a lot of air play as well. "Type" the title track off their sophomore release would also get a lot of airplay after it's release. The third album "Stain" produced another song called "Leave It Alone" that would enjoy significant radio play. "Nothingness" also on "Stain is an excellent track as well.
