This is the last in our series about "myths" about Bangkok. This one definitely went in another direction. While the prompt was "It's Easy to Date in Bangkok", we ended up discussing what it's like dating in Bangkok. From our perspective and that of a local that dates foreigners.

Great topic and I love how each one of you talk about their experiences. The danger of dating overseas for a black man traveling and still living in the USA is that he will almost stop dating there. The only way I spend anytime with a woman in America is that she will have to practically throw herself at me. Its a major headache and waste of time dating in the USA. My experience with woman in foreign countries is that they're feminine, soft, smell and feels so good and its an abundance of women like that in foreign countries.

I think there is growing love for tan skin or honey colored skin in Thailand , so we probably heading towards a shift when it comes to beauty standard in thai culture?
@Minoritynomad
@Minoritynomad 3 жыл бұрын
noooooooo. I disagree with this. Not in the 8 years I've called Thailand home. The beauty standard in Thailand is largely based on the standards in Korea, Japan, and China. Which are extremely eurocentric. It just takes a look at tv shows, movies, and advertisements to see not much has changed. Sure, folks on the islands tend to embrace tanned skin. But in Bangkok, the center of Thai popular society, absolutely not.
@FreeSudani
@FreeSudani 3 жыл бұрын
@@Minoritynomad thats true , but what im saying is there are signs that its starting to fade , not gonna happen overnight of course , for example in billboards and advertisements nowadays you can notice there are more and more people of color (thats probably unthinkable 10 years ago) , clothing brands are embracing diversity in thier ads , I also remember few years ago they opened a tanning salon in bangkok and many of the customers are locals ,last beauty pageants it had a half-black contestant , so you can realize globalization has its effects on the beauty standard to be more accepting of darker skin tone.

I suppose. A few small examples don't make a trend I think. One of my good friends is a black model in Bangkok that's on billboards and buses. So I understand what you mean. I just disagree on the overall direction. It's like getting stabbed and they pull the knife out an Inch and call it progress. Lol

@@Minoritynomad but would you agree thats how trends are normally established , its always be an initial state of small significance and then builds upon itself, in america for example before Michael Jordan, being bald was considered unattractive , and he made it sexy , and i personally believe that alot of thais (atleast subconsciously) are not fans of the whitening culture in thailand, coz in reality its time and money consuming but they feel that they have to conform to social standards. but thats just my opinion hahaha

Don't entirely agree or disagree with you on this. Time will tell. Think we'll continue to have a few examples of "look we love diversity" while the norm will remain relatively unchanged. In the end, its still a great place to live.

You prefer Pattaya and Phukets nightlife over Bangkok because of not working girls? Hate to break it to you, but Pattaya and Phuket nightlifes are ALWAYS full of working girls one way or another. Bangkok, only select areas. Was just having this discussion. There are very very very few non working women in Pattaya dating foreigners. Phuket is a bit better but still saturated. Bangkok, working women are extremely easy to avoid.

I think you have both right and wrong about Thai girls don't date black men, is both them who is racist and dont. I think many Western men hear from the Thai girls they dont like "chocolate men" especially in the bars. But if you are a Western men from Europe, US or Australia even if you are black and white Bangkok is so easy to date is crazy. Im a Scandinavia men of 185 cm, blond hair in my 30s and is so easy to date in Bangkok is crazy.
@Minoritynomad
@Minoritynomad 3 жыл бұрын
I didn't say Thai girls don't date black men. I pointed out that some do and a cultural disconnect still exists in the place of interracial dating. Thailand is NOT a homogenous society. And it has an obsession with whitness. Which is why a large number of the celebrities and models here are mixed with Thai and European. Racism comes in many forms. And I wouldn't say not dating a certain race is inherently racists. The the reasoning/logic can have vestiges of racism. Ultimately, being a westerner with money does make dating in Bangkok/Thailand extremely easy. But it sure as hell doesn't hurt to be a white man. lol

Question Thai men are of color right? Maybe I'm misunderstanding what was said. Also, I think it is ridiculous to move to another country and not be interested in the local men as a potential love interest. The bortha is so right about programming. let that mess go. Thai men are beautiful and you can meet a guy that wants a serious relationship. I think dating people within your own ethnicity is very common. However, I have met a lot of Thai guys open to being with western women.
@Minoritynomad
@Minoritynomad 3 жыл бұрын
You bring up interesting questions and points. So I'll take some time to address them. 1. Thai people will NOT call themselves people of color. In fact, Thai culture goes out of it's way to erase color from people through the use of skin whitening products and elevating fair skinned children from Mixed Thai and European parents to celebrity status. 2. Why is it ridiculous to not be interested in locals as a love interest? Preference is preference. Because you live in a place doesn't mean you have to be attracted to the locals romantically. That makes no sense. I date locals everywhere I go but don't expect others to do so. 3. It seems you're admonishing these sisters for not necessarily dating thai men (I don't believe either said they're off the menu. lol) while acknowledging the local's right to date within their ethnicity. Why are locals afforded that luxury and we aren't? Dating is complicated and every person is different. Especially for foreigners. Not to mention black foreigners. If people move with basic respect I have no issue with them choosing to date someone or not.
