So I've been trying to put together this interview for quite sometime. It's rare that I run into brothers traveling abroad. But I don't know quite a few that are ex pats. Brandon and Antonio both live in Bangkok and I thought they would provide a unique insight into who we are.

What questions do you have about being an African American man living as an Ex Pat?
@edwardrobinson8947

Minority Nomad I have many. first is how do I make money. my story is a bit unique, I was in Thailand for about a year I don't want to point fingers but. I overstayed my visa twice someone stole my bachelors degree so I couldn't teach. and teachings agencies didn't pay during pay time nor give me my resident or working permit/visa.
@Minoritynomad
@Minoritynomad 7 жыл бұрын
+Edward Robinson well there are many avenues on how to make money as an ex pat. It depends on your area of expertise. Thailand has locked down hard on the overstays for long term. Not sure what teaching agencies you were with but you should have been directly working for schools. Not agencies. Any agency that's "paying" you is a ripoff.

I'm not quite sure what I can do as an expat. I know I LOVE to write, and I'm driven. I guess that's too general. I'll look it up. did you find your niche right away or was it trial and error?
@Minoritynomad
@Minoritynomad 7 жыл бұрын
my story is different as I never needed to do what I do to make money. I've always done what I do because I love doing it. The money came later. I recognize i'm unique in that way But I don't think the idea to just do what you love is. Find your passion and put your energy into it. The problem is so may people are interested in things and not committed.

An interesting video and discussion to me. I'm a older, white man who has retired and lived in Thailand for the last 10 years. My 45 year old nephew, who was adopted as an infant into my family, is black. He visited with me in Thailand for 5 weeks in late 2017 and we traveled together around Thailand and Cambodia. While he never encountered blatant racism during our travels, there were subtle, but to him, fairly obvious slights. On Walking Street in Pattaya, while "welcome girls" in front of clubs would grab my arm and try to pull me in, he rarely had to deal with that annoyance. He also noticed that the same girls tended to look away when he looked in their direction. Interestingly, once we were inside the clubs, his money was clearly as good as anybody else's and he got the same attention as everybody. We were never denied service at any hotel or restaurant. He was on a quest to loose some weight and power-walked seven to eight miles a day around Bangkok and Phnom Penh with never an incident. He really enjoyed the trip and plans to return next year and is seriously considering retiring to Thailand when that time comes. I'm passing your video onto him, I'll be interested in his reaction to it.

Yeah. Our experiences can differ wildly but one thing remains, most brothers can see the HUGE difference between how we're treated in the states as opposed to outside. Thanks for sharing and taking the time to share his experience.

Thank your for your videos. I am a Black man and in 2000 I picked up and left the US and moved to Berlin. I just wanted to try some new things. I had been working in sales for a telecoms company before I left. When I got there, I knock on doors, despite speaking no German, until I got a job as a Software Consultant. A year later, suffering the Dot Com crash, I had to reinvent myself in a land and manage to get a visa to stay even though it was dependent on my job. Long story, short, I stayed for 12 years! I met other Black people from the US and other places that were there grinding who had not been in the military. I eventually came back to the US but have not felt that any of my experiences have been helpful in getting reestablished here. After 4 years, I moved to Spain 6 months ago to set up a business. I am back in SC now, and looking to make my next move.

Thanks for remembering us Jamaicans... I was born and raised in Toronto and spent all of my holidays in the Bronx and one trip to Fort Lauderdale as a child to see family. Although we got Jamaican roots, most of my family live in the US. World travel has always been a dream of mine since I was a child. Now I am teaching in UAE and just beginning to live out this travel dream (I just recently went to London for the first time and met family out there). I heard Thailand can be very hot. seeing as I can't convince any of my friends to come along with me would it be difficult traveling around by myself? I can relate to the guest on the show, I to is from a Caribbean background, traveling for me and most of my friends has always been going back home to visit family or to other Caribbean destinations, I am trying to get away from that mind set and to see more of the world

apologize If I will give you information about Thailand. You can come to Thailand without any fear. Everyone has a good heart. And everyone has a different perspective. We treat everyone well. Because all is a good friendship for all who visit our Thailand. I recommend For Thailand In May as well as July. It was raining. And sometimes hot weather And I'm sure the northern part of Thailand. It is still raining but there are many interesting attractions and can make you enjoy the trip. For Bangkok A big city Many tourist attractions such as Khao San Road are well known to foreigners and many Sukhumvit Roads for nightclubs. To take you to enjoy the music And Yaowarat Road is a street of Thai-Chinese people and delicious food. But for foreigners Popular visit to temples and simple lifestyle of the people.

This was actually super interesting to me, because all of the time people have joked that I haven't had the "normative Black" experience. Which is probably true, because I myself am mixed with Japanese. So, from a very young age travel has always been apart of my life. I've been visiting my family in Tokyo/Yokohama for ages, and and I've been to several countries in Western Europe/The Caribbean for leisure. I've always understood the general reservation amongst Blacks to travel abroad in fears of racism, but everywhere I've gone I can honestly say is FAR less prejudice than the US - and I'm a Bay Area native lol. Hearing your guys' perspectives on how travel just wasn't normalized growing up was actually super enlightening to me, because it actually made me realize how much of a deficit in general exposure there is amongst our community. Haha the only time I've felt a little odd abroad was in Seoul. Not Seoul as a whole, just a group of Chinese tourists stopped me to take a photo with me because I guess they had never seen a Black person before. Wasn't malicious though. Got a kick out of it. Would've loved to known whose Instagram that ended up on. Great video though!

hahahahaha. Yeah, that's a common thing with the Chinese. The LOVE taking pictures with us. It's interesting given your heritage. I have several Black/Japanese friends. Three that live here in Bangkok as well and they've all been travelers since they were kids. I feel like the fact you have a direct cultural "home" plays into that. Always interesting to hear other peopels perspective on this given how diverse our community is.

I came across this video by accident. I loved it! Guys, well done. You're right, getting past the mental block to travel for some of us isn't easy. Culture in America doesn't encourage it, so our world view is limited. Thailand seems to be very affordable, with cost being near next to nothing when comparing U.S. dollars to their Bahts. This would make a great Netflix series, "Life for Black people outside of the United States, A Reality Take on Life" Maybe a few interviews with locals from the topic country (maybe 6 country series), etc. Since I haven't travel much, I'd be the wrong host but one of you could pull it off. I could help with the graphics though!
@Minoritynomad
@Minoritynomad 5 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't go that far in regards to cost. Thailand is quite a bit cheaper than the U.S. But not next to nothing. A good cocktail, for example, will still run you about $10. And it also depends on where in the states you're comparing. NYC and Lubbock are both American cities but can't be compared in cost. lol. I've talked to a few people about that kind of idea. Just not something I would put my time into. But there are a few series on YT that dig into that. There's an African brother that's doing something similar in Japan. Black in Japan or something like that. He interviews blacks living there.

Fake digital nomad guru's have transformed the city into their little gentrified playground. Image an inner city area that had all people of color. Now imagine a bunch of white yuppies coming in and buying up everything. Closing down the locals shops from juice bars and yoga studios. THAT'S what Chiang Mai is like. But this is the view of someone that was there before all this happened so i'm jaded. You might love it.

Love the video! I'm so ready to break away but I need to get a better understanding of what it takes to become an ex-pat. African american male with tech skills, what is the social norms in Thailand? What business opportunities are in Thailand? What hurdles are there in Thailand for African american males?
@Minoritynomad
@Minoritynomad 7 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by social norms? It really depends on the business. Quite a few expats in the restaurant and start-up spaces. There aren't really any specific "hurdles" for AA males. The hurdles would be general. Of course there is bias against dark skinned peoples in general. And the Thai law gives preferential hiring to Thai peoples. For an AA, I would highly recommend going into business for yourself and hustling up clients or working for a western company.

This is awesome discussion as American Expats in Bangkok. I'm interested to hear more on the guy who has married to local woman and father to a child, what language do you speak to your kid and does your wife speak Thai at home. Reason why is I'm married to a Vietnamese girl, now we have a 2 month old boy but my wife only speaks Vietnamese to him while I can only speak English/Thai. Also, will you claim citizenship for your child, i.e. ours has 2 nationalities (Thai/Vietnam).

Hi and thank you for this video. I'm an American and I married a Thai immigrant here in the States, but we're very seriously considering retiring in Thailand. Neither of us are black, we're both ethnically Chinese men, but I do find it valuable to hear the experiences of US ex pats who've immigrated to Thailand. The legality of our marriage there is a whole other issue.

Honestly, I still say Thailand is the best place in the world to retire right now. Even with all the annoying Covid stuff and stupidity from certain "leaders". The baht is falling which makes it even more affordable. A creative wave has been pushing the last 5 or so years. Which means some amazing exhibitions and events. And you can easily get anywhere on Europe or Asia. I highly recommend it. Not sure the details on how your marriage will be recognised. But I can assure you one thing, everyday people don't care one bit. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Great Video discussion Brotha Nomad. As a Nigerian-American from LA Ole Boi in the Dark Blue Jeans was a Fool for the Nigerian jokes..lol. But Seriously this Discussion has motivated me even more to Travel to Thailand. One of my Bros/Homies whose African-American Has been out there Several times (Mostly Bangkok) and LOVES it out there. He's told me some stories about the Solid Accommodations out there for Tourists and the High Level of Cooperation Thai Women seem to show towards American Black Men. My Major issue as Highlighted within the Discussion is The 'Highly Negative perception' that The Thai people ESP the Police seem to have towards 'African Looking' people especially Nigerians due to their involvement in the Illegal trades of that country. Are there certain Cities within the Country or Certain areas within Bangkok that I need to be Mindful of being that I have a Darker complexion than you & that I'm also of Nigerian descent even as an American? Appreciate your Advice & Feedback.

Fear is the biggest thing that keeps most people, including my family, from traveling abroad. They believe the media or they let someone else’s bad experience dictate their opinion. When I went abroad for 9 months, my family was afraid. And interestingly, it was during the time when black men in America were getting shot quite often by police officers. They were afraid for me smh. I was way more safe where I was abroad than they were, in America. Great video guys. It’s great to see black people traveling and not allowing fear to keep them from exploring the world.

yeah i've been considering it. My problem is I don't really like giving people financial advice nor sharing what's in my pockets publicly. Think I might do a video suggesting work paths. @gutsberserk2718

I can fully understand not sharing your personal finances. You don't have to do your finances maybe just general methods of setting up reliable income. I prefer expat to traveling nomad. Digital Nomads-nomads have more limitations than expats. As an expat my finances will be setup so don't have to work at all. If i work its because i enoy it.

Yup we all still live in Bangkok. Its Thailand my friend. No such thing as multicultural here. You'll find expat areas with a few different faces but nothing even close to a western perspective of multiculturalism. For the most part, Asian countries are relatively homogeneous. Bangkok would be the most "diverse" place you'll find in Thailand. A bit of Chiang Mai but those arent permanent residents. Lots of "digital nomads" and bloggers.

@Minoritynomad
@Minoritynomad 5 жыл бұрын
It's tough because what you and I consider suitable would be different. For example, I could never live in some of the smaller thai cities. But I know many that love it. Heres the major issue you'll have bringing a western family. Language. If you dont speak thai I highly recommend you stay as close to cities as possible or learn before you come. At least you and your lady. Further away from bangkok, Chiang mai, and the islands. the worse English is. Bang Sue and Bangrak are neighborhoods on the outskirts of Bangkok. Good options. Also, you'll need to look into schooling options. Thai schools teach in thai. Privates in English but extremely expensive.

I actually have a three-part interview with two sisters that live here in Bangkok. I'll link below. Let's be clear, you will NOT find a place without racism if it's a destination that actually interacts with foreigners. But I always say, there are two types of "racism". Big R and Little R. Big R is the racism we have in the US and the UK. Aggressive, abusive, and life-threatening. Little R, that's what you'll find in most places. Microaggressions, stereotypes, and awkward encounters. That's Thailand. Honestly, racism isn't a huge problem here. It's more classism. In most places, you're American first. Also, sending you these links made me realize how many sisters I've interviewed over the years. lol

But he might get random stops and ID checks. Especially if he's in the area where many African drug dealers and sex workers are. Overall, I don't think it'll be "unplesant". That's really an individual thing. I know middle class white men that don't like living in Thailand.

+The Autism Vlog gonna have to build up that armor. Unfortunately, it’s the way it is. I’ll never let it stop opportunities at a better life.
