Living Opera: my trick for singing high notes (it’s a little weird!!!)

The 2nd video in the Living Opera technique series!!!
....
I know in the video Norman says our first video is about something else (and it was - we shot these in a sequence but realized it didn’t make sense to upload in that order?!!!)
...
So you live and learn!!
...
A while back I said I’ve actually used STACCATO attack to reach my upper register and a few of you were like WHAT DOES THAT MEAN
....
So in this video I do my best to demonstrate how I used this exercise to eventually discover my top.
...
I hope it helps!!
...
Leave us a comment below if you have any questions and happy practicing!!!

The background music is extremely distracting. Especially for a classical training video. But you have a beautiful voice.

I was going to say this. It's completely in appropriate for this type of video, especially when we are already straining to hear you in an unpadded room through a poor microphone.

Interestingly you actually verbalize things better than a LOT of the teachers I have had.

Coincidence because I was realizing about an hour ago how helpful staccato is to reaching your high notes.

Hello Soula and Norman, I have just subscribed to your site - I found a reply from you to someone asking a question on Freya Casey's site. I have finished for the day, but having been singing seriously for a couple of years or so, I was very interested to find your site. I sing different genres because a voice coach said it was a good thing not to stick entirely to just one genre. But my main genres are musical theatre and opera, and so I was so pleased to discover you. At the moment I am learning two "opera" or opera type songs - Mein Herr Marquis (Laughing Song) and Dream a Dream, Elysium. I have also sung Time To Say Goodbye, Non ho l'eta and Bella Ciao. OK, perhaps not opera as such, but sort of! In addition, I sing operatic songs from musicals. Apologies if I have bored you, but just wanted to put you in the picture and thank you both for being there.

Hey great video. Really helpfull. Are there any exercises for developing vibrato on these high notes.
@LivingOpera
@LivingOpera 4 жыл бұрын
Oh that's a GREAT question - I found that because my support wasn't strong enough my vibrato was too fast in the top for a long time. I find that the steady vibrato actually comes with a combination of physical strength and coordination along with the right conception of the vowel. So I suppose it's less about individual exercises and more about the overall conception and construction of the voice.

On your top notes your vibrato will come if you are relaxed, and there is little tension

Yesss!!!! High notes need to have room for the tongue root to release 😘 my A is also a transition area for me.

Geia sou Soula! I am glad I stumbled on your channel. I am a counter tenor, but of course originally I was mistaken for a bass baritone. So for quite some years I was ruining my voice! Right now I am being coached by a superb mezzo soprano who specializes in trouser roles. When I exercise I can climb up to a C6 but when I sing, I can reach F5 with relative ease, I would like to release my range up to B5 flat. The notes are there, do you have any suggestions as to how to achieve that? Ps I work as a waiter and you understand I suppose, the toll it takes on the singing voice.

Thank you for great video and wonderful tips. I have a question regarding high notes: what do I have to do if my larynx goes up on higher notes and I cannot produce free, full concentrated sound in a right place. Instead of that the sound is flat, collapsed and very painful both physically an mentally. I've been battling this problem for ages and seem to not finding the answer.

try to sing them with your tongue out and also on high notes go down , kinda bend your knees or do little reverence , and observe what is happening, it will help.

a lot of people give tips to try to recreate a yawn which brings your larynx down so try to hit a high note with a yawn and after a little while you should learn to keep your larynx low

can you talk about the end of addio del passato the octave jump from the low a to high a in the last phrase. How do you get high notes to not feel high when you are jumping up?
@vassilisvouris6269
@vassilisvouris6269 3 жыл бұрын
Perhaps you should feel already tuned in the higher pitch you want to reach. If you think that way you will not have to carry the weight of the lower note while hitting the higher note. Also the Vaccaj exercises of the interval in question and the portamento exercises would also help.

Don't put too much weight (anticipate the octave) and modulate the vowel. Just a thought..

The neck muscles are way to involved because of the pushing, and the vowel is not pure (it sounds like A O and U simultaneously).

I always look upwards the higher I go. My teacher says not to because I’m not connected to the text and character. How can I stop it? When you say high A, you mean A6? That always makes me doubt my skills because I learned that specific way. I’ve been told I can sing low A to middle A to high A, and I’m not sure which octaves those are. Thank you!
@livrowland171

No, A5... There's only one aria in the whole of opera that calls for an A6 and most women would never sing it.

Please don’t interrupt the other! Norman most tenors like me need help with the passagio. Help us work through it to the upper register. Please don’t apologize for being just singers but not pedagogues. The only people I’ve ever learned from has been singers, never trainers. (I’ve had several). Also, you bring up the resonance, point to your cheeks and think we understand. Walk us through that and illustrate it. Then Norman, if you can “ cover “ show us how to develop that ability.
