Living up a bum - The Sea Cucumber and Pearl Fish

They say 'Home is where the heart is', well for some 'Home is where the bum is'.. Wait! What? Backup! Yep you heard right 'Home is where the bum is', if you're a pearl fish and that bum is a sea cucumber.
Sea cucumbers are sausage shape animals that are found on the bottom of the ocean where they vacuum up the sand and filter out all the good bits. It seems as though pearl fish have taken a bit of a fancy for some particular sea cucumbers and set up house in their rear end.
Why? Is it the million dollar ocean views? We asked all these questions and more. The upside is, any place you live from now on is going to seem like paradise.

The Most Trusting person on the internet. But that is not the definition of a symbiotic relationship. A symbiotic relationship is when one or both parties are/is positively affected.
@Setsuraful
@Setsuraful 6 жыл бұрын
Symbiotic refers to a mutually beneficial relationship. Parasitic is when one organism is taking advantage of another while giving nothing in return. The fish uses the sea cucumber, even eats it from the inside out with doing nothing for it in return, that means it is a parasite.

I would imagine that the fish fed on a and prevented the spread of a parasite or other infection that once caused difficulties for the cucumber species. even with the teeth those squishy bits are relatively poorly defended against small intruders. It could be that the toothed variety is an offshoot of the untoothed variety that spent some energy on some chemical defense and therefor does not benefit from that fish. It would be interesting to compare the toxicity or metabolic rates of the species to see if the fish is benefiting the cucumber by allowing it to not have to worry so much about internal defense.

Do you think there's any chance that the fish actually provides nutrients to the cucumber? With all those fish living in such small quarters I would assume the ammonia levels must rise fairly quickly, do the cucumbers have a way of harnessing this and using to their advantage? I know they're very different organisms, but In anemones you see that they are able to uptake ammonia that is released by their host anemonefish which allows an increase in their metabolism, could this also be true for this cucumber/fish relationship? P.S. Great channel, I love seeing youtube science channels which give solid information from someone who has a deep academic background in the material!
