yeah...rate of charge for plugins is almost irrelevant cuz the whole point of them is not to have to charge on the road trip and at home ....plug it in and go to sleep. The slower the better, battery life will be longer

Are there any issues with the 12v battery? We have an EV6, every time we charge it up it flattens the 12v. Apparently, the latest Hyundai EVs now have a button you push to restart the 12v if it goes down. No issues with the plug-in? AA told us some plug-ins have this as well.

€55,000 !!!!!! Holy God Biddy!! On another note, how did you find the AWD? (for 'on road' driving I mean) I have Quattro AWD in my car and I find it very nice, even for day to day driving, moving out of junctions etc, so sure footed, no danger of 'tramping' or judder on take off on poor surfaces, just grip.
@carsirelanddotie
@carsirelanddotie 3 жыл бұрын
It was very satisfying, very similar feel to what you are describing. Grip off the line was particularly impressive for quite a chunky machine. It would have been interesting to give it a proper off-road test.

Nice review. Really thinking about buying this car. I have a garage so I can install a wall charger. My daily commute is around 50km. But I was wondering how fast you can go in pure EV mode before the gas engine kicks in. Can you pls tell me? It's because the majority of my commute is on the highway and I want to know if the car drives pure electric up to 120 or 110km/h.
@SimonCobb

From the research I’ve done, the petrol engine will start up in order to warm the cabin, and it will start up reasonably randomly thereafter for short periods of time, perhaps to recharge the 12V battery or if you accelerate slightly too hard. It cannot be run exclusively in pure EV mode, which bugs me, as that’s exactly what I would want to do for all my around town travel. You also can’t precondition the cabin to your preferred temperature, without the engine running. My BMW i3 does that, using electricity, which if plugged in means getting into a warm cabin in winter, but still with a full battery and not wasting power having on heat the cabin. I’d really like these issues sorted before I buy this vehicle.

Hi, thanks for an interesting video. I've just bought 2.2 l Sorento since I believe 1.6 l engine is not enough for such a big car even when combined with battery. 2.2 l diesel should have longer live. What do you think? Any advice?
@geemy9675
@geemy9675 3 жыл бұрын
the plug in Sorento has a 67kW electric motor it should be able to provide most of the torque combined with the petrol engine when you need reasonable acceleration. as long as you are not towing it shouldn't put huge load on the petrol engine. to cruise at 70-80mph you don't need a lot of power/displacement. I have a V6 Sorento and it makes plenty of power (290hp) but is a bit lazy due to the transmission and lacks torque and I'm very rarely pushing the engine, more driving in eco mode . my fiat 500e with 111hp feels much quicker, although it's 1 full second slower to 60mph. of course it's also 1000lbs lighter (25%) but it's mostly due to all the torque being available instantly. I would definitely choose the plugin over the diesel but it depends where you live, price of petrol vs diesel, how many miles you do every day, wether you have home charging and wether you need AWD..

No need to sit at a public charger for 4 hours if you plug it in overnight - it will be full when you wake up. The clue is in the name “plug-in” hybrid. Otherwise, if you’re not going to plug it in, then you might as well just buy a standard hybrid. How long is your daily commute? The average for Dubliners is about 15km. You should never have to use it in petrol mode if you plug it in every night.

Economy asside, how is the hybrid engine compared to the diesel. Under powered?
@carsirelanddotie

The hybrid is actually more powerful than the diesel. 261bhp for the hybrid vs 199bhp for the diesel. It never felt low on power.

@@carsirelanddotie Power alone doesn't complete the picture. What are the torque numbers?
@geemy9675
@geemy9675 3 жыл бұрын
@@flexairz torque alone doesn't complete the picture either. instant torque always available without shifting and at any speed/rpm makes a big difference. I don't like automatic transmission for that reason, because of the lag, and evs or hybrid with reasonably powerful electric motors give you that instant boost in power whenever you want
@njitram2000
@njitram2000 3 жыл бұрын
@@geemy9675 And to complete your picture: torque from the electric engine in a hybrid depends on the speed. I test drove a BMW X2 hybrid and at 70km/h I had to accelerate to 120 but it was not capable of anything. I had to panic switch from EV to hybrid mode on the motorway because it was really that bad. From standstill, yes. But not from higher speeds. The VW group and Mercedes hybrids don't have that problem (test drove those too). All of them, including the BMW, were rated at 200-240hp

But you have to consider few things. Sorento diesel is €3k more expensive and road tax is €270 extra. My current Mazda CX-5 diesel driving in town only; average fuel consumption is 8l/100 so same as Sorento on motorway… So how much mileage you have to do to justify €3.3k more on start ? Yes, you have to charge it every day but it costs less than €2. I did the whole math few weeks ago and finallyordered new Sorento PHEV.
@stevencampbell1150
@stevencampbell1150 3 жыл бұрын
@@adrianpluskota7053 maybe in the south that's the case but up here in the north the road tax is much cheaper for a start plus you don't have to worry about charging the diesel to get more economy out of it and having watched the diesel review as well I can't believe it was harder on fuel of it depends on how both were driven.

You didn't mention once the "Mixed" range of the car. Not everyone is going to try and use it as a pure EV which is what it sounds like you were doing. The mixed range is a lot more interesting for someone who does more than 50kms per day.
@njitram2000
@njitram2000 3 жыл бұрын
Fully agree. The whole point of a hybrid is that the engine cuts off the peaks in fuel usage. Although strangely enough, every hybrid I have driven is set up to use electric as much as possible and cut in the engine when you want to accelerate hard. That means the battery runs out quickly. I asked if I could use it the other way round for long journeys but the answer was no.

@carsirelanddotie
@carsirelanddotie 3 жыл бұрын
Ye, that's a confusing one alright. It's 0km of electric only range. It doesn't let you use all of the battery for EV driving alone. It reverts to hybrid mode once the battery gets too low.

13% is the threshold for the system to cut off ev engine in order just to save required amount of energy to support the petrol engine such as taking off the car and supplying the ac during cruise etc. The remainder 13% power is still used to support petrol engine and electrical system of the vehicle to maintain lower fuel consumption

Again with the white interiors! You'd have to say that for the price you'd probably buy a Skoda Enyaq or maybe a synergy hybrid like a Highlander. You'd also be investing in the high capacity home charger. Sorento is just too big and too useless on electric power.
@carsirelanddotie
@carsirelanddotie 3 жыл бұрын
A home charger is a must with any PHEV or EV really. The Highlander is actually quite a bit more expensive, starting at €65k. We have a review of that it coming soon. :)

You seem to have completly misunderstood how a PHEV works. If you are doing a small local journey, you can run on battery only, but you don’t treat it like a BEV battery only. You woukd in most cases, use the engine and would never get to a discharged battery. Come on, learn to drive a PHEV first
