The information is right on. The advice seems out-of-touch. I’m still hearing the same things I heard as a kid and later. “Be more organized”. Train yourself to be more organized”. Lots of talk about trying to be like a neurotypical person. I’ve found this thinking to be harmful. A person with ADHD already feels like they can’t do things they’re supposed to. It sounds like you’re trying to fix executive function deficiencies by using executive function strengths to fix them. Number one: stop trying to be neurotypical. You’re not. There is nothing wrong with that. Jessica from How to ADHD uses this: “if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid”. This speaker is lecturing us on how to not be a person with ADHD. I don’t believe this is helpful for someone with ADHD. It might be helpful for people who don’t know about it. But this speaker is literally telling us what’s wrong with us and to be more aware of it. And how to change to be like everyone else. Time to learn more.

Well said. Advice making ADHD people just change lifestyles to a typical person isn’t not effective.. that’s exactly how our symptoms start in the first place! Frustration and lack of motivation at how daunting it is to conform to things against our brain process! 😂 Dealing with ADHD involves thinking out of the box, to find ways we can keep up with society without being punished by it and still being able to stay motivated and enjoy it. Which isn’t easy but can be done

Some of my management tools are keeping things simple. Minimalist furnishings at home. Dropping activities if I’m having trouble doing all of them. Making my to-do list 1 item. Making a checklist of steps to complete a protect, then do it exactly the same way every time. We can get lost in between steps if they aren’t automatic. I put everything in my calendar with multiple reminders. Even if it’s just to call someone back that you said you would.

You got a good point there . But writing things down really help me in the past and that's good advice. But GOOD LUCK with the rest 🤣🤣🤣🤞Lateness, procrastination, listen to people... ha ha.. Pointless. I feel like a lost cause already

Hopefully this gives folks some idea of how utterly exhausting it is to attain normal functioning as a person with ADHD. Setting the reminders, filtering, rehearsing, checking the time, writing everything down, it just goes on and on and on. And you don't get any better at this. Your brain is set this way so all of these things are simply to bring you back into line with everybody else and as soon as you stop, you're back in la-la land. Brain plasticity is unproven in this area as yet and the effects of the 'mental exercises' programmes have been shown to be short-lived. This is HARD WORK.

And 90% of these suggestions are impossible to do for someone with ADHD. This video goes right up there with the idiot therapist who told me, after 40+ years of fighting major depression, to "just don't be depressed." Yeah. Why didn't I think of that?!?!? Equally idiotic.

I know stimulant medication works, because my last psychiatrist (left town 7-8 years ago). But looking for a new Psychiatrist/Psycologist in this city, who will prescribe them is impossible!! They worked so well! I am a Certified Psych:Alcohol/Drug Counselor! I would never abuse it!! I am a retired RN (still have my license!) and quite knowledgeable about ADHD. Why is it so difficult to get the medication that helped me before?

Make a list...you think i HAVENT been trying to do that my whole life?? Im well aware of what makes sense to do...its the doing that is the problem. Telling us to be "more organized" is like telling a drug addict to stop doing drugs. Yeah, we know, the anxiety and stress comes from constantly failing something that sounds so simple. And no, it doesnt take "just 5 minutes" to think of the important things. It takes 30 minutes to get the motvation to start thinking of thay list..then 20 minutes to figure out the perfect way to properly record it so we dont waste 30 minutes in the future being anxious about it. But before that "quick" thinking actually gets done, we waste another 15 min walking around the house because in thr process of finding the perfect solution to record this "quick list", a bunch of random, unfinished chores that need to get before travel are stressing us out. Its never quick unless its 20 minutes before we actually have to leave.

@@DocSnipes It's nearly impossible for a non-ADHD mind to understand that what you do without thinking about it - or with very little thought - is impossible for my mind to wrap around. You have no idea how many thousands of times I've "just written it down," or "gotten organized," only for it to fall apart, sometimes before I've even finished the list. Expecting an ADHD mind to be able to do this is like asking a 2 year old to answer an Algebra problem. Not only does the toddler have no idea what you're asking, but he also doesn't understand why his scribbling is wrong, and yours is right. Without my ADHD meds, I sit up at least an hour every night, calculating square roots in my head, just to get my brain to shut up so I can sleep. Before I could do that, I would take the letter A and a consonant (like -an). Then I would pair it with every letter. (Let's see. aan - not a word; ban - word; can - word; dan - word; ean - not a word; fan - word; etc) and count how many words. Then replace the A with the next vowel - E - and count how many words, and so on, to see which vowel "won" with the most words. Then, I would switch consonants, and start all over. All this, just to sleep.
@susanzipf412
@susanzipf412 2 жыл бұрын
Plus, the list has to be in the perfect style, form, and have the right check boxes (not too small, or too big), not to mention be in the right format (computer? Phone? handwriting? Will I pay it more attention if I write it in cursive? Calligraphy? Wait - did I feed the cat? Where is the cat food? Aw, crap. I forgot to rotate the laundry - gotta re-wash that. And might as well re-dry the drier load - it's wrinkled. Wait. What did I ever do with my iron? I know I used to have one. Hold on - Why am I carrying around a legal pad with "List" written on the top, and where did I put that pen?) AAARRRGGGGHHHHH! It got MUCH WORSE when I discovered MS Excel. Suddenly, there were CHARTS, and GRAPHS!

ADHDoomed, It constantly has held me back in life from relationships to career failure and financial struggles… it feels as though Society doesn’t have time or care if you struggle with it, it also seems like the help that is offered is only for people that have money and a good paying job with benefits, I hear all the same advice and it seems to come from people that don’t have it and can’t understand how it really feels. ADHD causes depression and to even get the motivation and direction to get help is to difficult to get started so I end up just taking a nap and hope it will all be fixed when I wake up… This advise is definitely coming from someone with adhd… the government your employer or landlord don’t give two s… if you have adhd.

@Catherine Golden Yes I very much understand how you felt. I'm assuming you're referring to my talk with my doctor. What I attempted to convey was about complicated association of mens health issues, them not paying enough attention to them is tuff as men age, horrible with ADD/ADHD. Remember everybody has small incidences as you describe, everybody! When it starts getting scary is the older lady driving on wrong side of highway people honking flaying their arms.... She gets stopped, says all those folks honking & waving are SO NICE ! (License revoked !) I evaluate how many times I'm honked at. With 2 sons they'll YANK my license cut it up and the tires on my car if I did that! Lol.

I search for my stuff EVERY DAY (keys, phones, etc) and I get so angry at myself every time. I keep seeing other people easily having their shit together- being able to focus for hours. It makes me feel so dump even though I know that I am not. Finally getting diagnosed and learning that there are others out there helps so much. Thanks again!

youre definitely not alone in this, im turning 30 this year, and boy has my life been a roller coaster, from being a top AP student in highschool to going to jail for a felony crime, losing scholarships and even my US residency, to working corporate jobs, firedepartment, government advisor, wedding photgrapher, dedicating one year of my life to teaching english to orphans and wanting to become a missionary, to many other wild things and yet never feeling like i fit in, simple things seem impossible yet abstract difficult things are usually not that hard. I only wish i had found out about this in highschool so that i could have avoided the many pitfalls that come with not understanding how your mind works and trying so hard to make yourself conform to regular life.

"Write things down." Honestly... Never been helpful. Ever. I forget I wrote the thing down to begin with. Or I know I wrote something down, don't remember what nor do I remember what I wrote it down on or where the paper/journal/sticky is that I wrote it down on. I can put sticky notes on both sides of my door and while they may (sometimes) be effective at first eventually it stops becoming something to pay attention to and just becomes "part of the door". I can put them on my computer and it just becomes "Something in the way", move it, forget about it and nothing even occurs to me that it is there for a reason and I should actually read the random piece of paper regardless of whether it is flashing neon with sparks and alarms going off or plain white paper...

Thank you. I definitely am a female who checks out. I feel overwhelmed dealing with people. I get anxious and then depressed. Being more organised is something I struggle with. I get feedback from family that I am not good enough. My mobile has a notebook section that I use regularly. Both long term, short term and daily. I have failed that many courses but no one knows why. I do but acceptance means I was treated horribly. I have addiction issues. Opiates were my Drug of Choice (DOC). I did a practical assessment and thankfully I was speaking through my thoughts, reading notes etc as it was a 4 hour prac. I couldn’t remember a section but because I went through it a bit more methodically and my teacher could see I was doing it right I passed. Prioritising is difficult. I can be very impulsive (shopping, apps etc) I struggle with small talk and listening. I sometimes will have a thought and will say it by over-talking others. My dad you I live with is a blurter. I often feel he is talking at me and not with me. I could sit there for hours and he will just talk and talk. I hate it. He always has to be right. Alternative views aren’t welcome. I will listen for 30min and no more before I go to stuff. He has become very upset because I am saving money for a home( unit) and a new car. He has said every day this month that I can only work 3 days a week, that the super I have saved won’t be enough and that I need to live with him because he wants to give me money when he dies and that he is the most gifted person with money. He drives me nuts. I have a great therapist and am slowly putting up boundaries. I pay my share of the bills, water bills, and buy most 80% the food. I earn less than him by $300 a fortnight. My mum has always said he was controlling with the finances. Mum paid all the bills, insurances, rates. Plus she would look after us as kids. But now dad is saying it is him. I really gotta move out. My credit is great. I have a little in savings. I am going to get a full time job (or 30 + hours /week). Thank you 🙏

Cognitive behavioral therapy would be helpful in this aspect. You have been conditioned to feel irritation when an alarm rings. Need to rewire the involuntary response and CBT can help with that. An alpha agonist (clonadine, guanfacine) may help as a secondary medication as well for emotional regulation but CBT is highly effective. (note - I have the same problem and am working on it.)

Thank you. This really helped me. I was diagnosed at 45 years old after suffering from addiction. I still struggle with anxiety but I am getting the help I need, making life changes in terms of career, excersise, lists, sleep and diet. The thing I hate is the amount of medication I now take just to get thru a day. I do feel alone and different from others so knowing others out there struggle with the same life challenges makes me feel less alone. Kia kaha fellow ADHD brother and sisters. Carson from NZ

This information needs to be updated. While the diagnostic symptoms noted are pretty correct, little here is of use to older ADD sufferers who have tried and failed using the suggested "practical suggestions" offered to normalize their life. In the past five years work on more specific diagnostic findings with fMRI and genetics have offered evidence that the executive function neurological physiology of the brain are atypical. Further, this has been linked to research on how generally used learning and thought patterns got organization, prioritization and reception of instructions indicating that the frustration level gained by using typical tools leads to perceived failure and future avoidance of tasks or subjects. Concurrent research on the uses of different chemical compounds and/or stimulants in older adults offers some normalization of functional learning and decision making capabilities in older adults. European findings need further review and broader tests for documented and verified acceptance. With other results on executive function disability and formerly unrecognized symptomatic problems, the development of new systems and directions for adult ADHD treatment and tools need to and are being developed. This time consuming process and need for verification of safe and practical utility is ongoing. It is probably impossible for individual psychiatrists and mental health professionals in general practice to keep up with, put into practice or create up to date effective you-tube presentations on these advances.
@ModMINI
@ModMINI Жыл бұрын
The practical suggestions are easier to follow with a treatment plan that includes medication and cognitive behavioral therapy. It's going to be hard to make these ideas 'stick' without the headspace that these provide.

I would start doing laundry; go to the bathroom to get the dirty clothes; see the toilet is dirty and start cleaning that; since I'm doing that, might as well get the sink, too, and the bathtub - oh, this shampoo is empty. Throw it away - crap. The garbage needs taken out. Grab the kitchen garbage on the way out - but wait, there's dirty dishes in the sink. Looks worse than crud. Put them in the dishwasher. Then clean the sink and counter. Then the stove - hey, let's have lasagna tonight. Get out the hamburger, defrost in microwave. Wait - what was I doing? You mean that? Yeah. I'm overcoming it, with medication help.

I think people who are commenting about this video in a negative way didn't actually watch the entire video. She did way more than say we - people challenged with ADHD like myself - need to be more organized. She gave concrete ways that work for people with ADHD on how to overcome some of our challenges. Some of her suggestions are things I'm already implementing but they took me decades to learn. Thankfully, other people can be helped just by watching the entire video. One of her suggestions, minimizing distractions in your work space, seems simple but it's extremely important and I had to learn that on my own. Because I have ADHD, I need everything to be visual so I don't forget I have it. Just hanging a white lace curtain over my shelving has done wonders to calm my mental energy but still keeps everything where I can see it. She also suggests using creative visualization to help motivate us to reach our in goals. I learn that having a vision board showing all the rewards of my current project in my workspace is great to help remind me why I'm actually doing what I'm doing, because as you know retaining motivation for long-term goals is hard for people with ADHD, something she also addresses in this video. Visualizing my results when I'm struggling with procrastination - something she also suggests - is also great at helping me do stuff that I find boring. Her video is about understanding why we struggle and coming up with ways that work for ADHD people ahead of time. The point of this video is to have a plan in place for when the challenges occur because we know they're going to show up. However if someone doesn't watch the entire video, they won't know that. My biggest problem as a ADHDer is capturing information from face to face conversations and blurting out mid sentence from someone who's feeding me a brief at work. I find it so hard to write down notes but having to cycle back to them to ensure that I understand what I just heard or seen, and I find myself not being able to comprehend 3 out of 5 times a meeting happens. The streaming phase of listening is something I constantly struggle with and I use blurting as a mechanism to try and understand concepts formed from keywords that I catch here and there. I cannot under any circumstance be fed a huge amount of information. Im fed up with my life. I hate who I am.

"Get enough sleep" yeah, could you tell that to people who think it acceptable to play music hours past midnight? Even with ear plugs I can hear the base, and the sensitivity to sounds means I cannot ignore it. So, no sleep until everybody else is asleep. Iam writing this at 3 am because the people downstairs are partying. ...and if I ask them to turn it down (I have before), they will tell me that I cannot expect people not to make sounds .... Sure, not playing music as 3am is the same as not making any sounds of any kind at any time /s even when it's silent it takes me 1-3 hours to fall asleep, not because I do stuff (I only get on my computer/phone when noise is keeping me up), but because I become wide awake again for seemingly no reason. Sometimes I feel like my mind is fraying... I need 8 hrs of sleep to be reasonably functional, but I can get it maybe one night pr week.... Melatonin helps, but gives me "hangover"... Not everything can be fixed with planning

While there is overlap with some of the presenting symptoms between ADHD and BPD, the core trait for borderline personality disorder is an intense fear of abandonment and the symptoms arise out of that.

Would PTSD trigger ADHD or OCPD?
@sillysokka1130
@sillysokka1130 2 жыл бұрын
No, ADHD is a condition that people are born with, and is almost always genetically passed down by parents. PTSD can trigger anxiety and depression like symptoms and ADHD have similar misdiagnostics to anxiety and depression also, so this is perhaps where the two could potentially overlap.

There is overlap between some of the symptoms of ADHD and PTSD, but one starts intrinsically and signs are there from childhood, whereas PTSD is by definition secondary to trauma. The treatments therefore focus on 2 different paths, either dealing with the trauma or dealing with the spectrum of challenges varying from lifestyle and coaching help to deal with symptoms through to medication. Dysregulation in PTSD is part learned response, in ADHD it's unlearned response etc. There is a lot of overlap, which is why finding an experienced practitioner is important.

@@sillysokka1130 this is not correct. People with adhd are born hyper sensitive but not with adhd. The negative environment they are raised in is what eventually brings on the adhd.

@@namelessentity8045 do you want to research before you say this is not correct? ADHD is heavily genetic and is a neurological difference to other people. It’s a fact mate, if you are interested research into the condition more from different sources .. It’s nothing to do with the negative environments at all, completely throwing out false information. Their are plenty of people being diagnosed with ADHD from children to Adulthood who have all sorts of different back grounds.

It's important to understand that ADHD can manifest in different ways, and it's not uncommon for symptoms to change over time. There are two main types of ADHD: the hyperactive type and the inattentive type. You may have initially experienced the hyperactive type, characterized by excess energy, and are now experiencing more of the inattentive type. Here are some possible reasons for this shift: 1. Changes in Sleep Patterns: One of the key factors that can influence ADHD symptoms is the quality of sleep. If you're not getting enough quality sleep, it can exacerbate symptoms of ADHD, making it more difficult to concentrate and regulate your moods. If you've been feeling more tired or lethargic lately, it might be worth examining your sleep habits. 2. Stress and Emotional Dysregulation: People with ADHD often struggle with emotional dysregulation, which can be exacerbated by stress. If you've been under a lot of stress lately, this could be contributing to your shift in energy levels. 3. Changes in Environment or Routine: Your environment and routine can significantly impact your ADHD symptoms. If there have been changes in your life recently, such as a new job or a move, this could be affecting your symptoms. 4. Physical or Cognitive Restlessness: ADHD can also manifest as a constant need to keep the mind or body going. If you're feeling mentally exhausted rather than physically hyperactive, this could be a sign of cognitive restlessness. 5. Medication or Diet Changes: If you're on medication for ADHD or have made changes to your diet, these could also be influencing your symptoms. 6. Remember, it's crucial to consult with a healthcare professional if you're experiencing significant changes in your symptoms or if your symptoms are causing distress. They can help you understand these changes and provide strategies to manage your symptoms effectively.
