Texas has 4 major metropolitan areas to choose from of you are looking to relocate here. They are Houston TX vs Dallas TX vs Austin TX vs San Antonio TX. And when looking to choose which one is best for you, its very important to know their differences.
Austin TX is known for being the blue dot in a red state. Its motto is "keep austin weird" and it definitely is known for its laid back vibe, and awesome music and food scene. The geographic scenery here is awesome, with massive rolling hills, a dryer climate, and the Colorado River running right through the city. The unfortunate downside to Austin is that prices are significantly higher to purchase a home than any of the other metroplexes.
Houston TX is the largest city in any of these metroplexes, with tons of affordable family friendly suburbs to choose from. Houston is the only city out of these with close proximity to the Texas coast. Housing affordability here is very good. There are tons of things to do in both the city and suburbs here. It is a big sports and food city.
Dallas TX & Fort Worth are both very nice cities with tons of great job opportunities and are experiencing tons of growth. Dallas is arguably the cleanest of the 4 cities. It has a more luxurious upscale vibe to it. It has some amazing family oriented suburbs located very close to downtown.
San Antonio is home to the Alamo. With a picturesque hill country setting, San Antonio is the smallest of the 4 cities. Housing affordability is very good here. It is the home of many military members and the San Antonio Spurs.
This video explains the differences between the cities to help you choose the best one for you!

Houston: feels most global/international of the four cities, tons of culture, very ethnically diverse, hot, humid, hurricanes, tons to see and do (e.g. NASA, Galveston beaches, museums, Rice University is one of the top ranked universities in the USA) Dallas: white collar, finance, some tech, clean, well organized, sometimes feels like the Midwest in Texas, more of an evangelical Christian influence here and there (not in any bad way but still noticeable) Austin: liberal (for Texas, but probably more moderate or liberal libertarian compared to California), tech, music, near the Hill Country, University of Texas Austin is one of the top ranked public universities in the USA San Antonio: blue collar, military, where the Tex meets Mex, not too far from the Hill Country

Good summary. I'd like to add that Houston has the most variance in biomes of the four... which makes a lot of sense given how spread out it is. Houston is structured like LA and has similar related issues. I prefer the west and northwest side of town but the museum district is a great place to spend time as well. You've got the greatest variety of experience in Houston, but between distance and traffic, sometimes you can make it to Austin faster than getting across to the opposite end of town (I've literally spent more time driving guests to the space center or Galveston than I have going to visit friends in the Bee Cave area). Houston has a lot of parts of town you'll want to avoid and a lot of parts that are amazing. It'll be palpable when you cross to the wrong side of the tracks... Probably will want to avoid doing that at inopportune times. Dallas is very notable in that it has the least amount of problem areas of the four and the difference between ft worth and dallas is a nice contrast as well. Highland park is probably the best high end Beverly Hills style community in Texas if that's your thing, but prices are likewise to match. Great place, very pricey, you probably need to be a finance bro to make it pencil out. Try the Grapevine area for smaller town feel and more reasonable prices while being close to both city centers. Austin is great, especially the west side. The area around Hamilton Pool has some of the best trails and rock climbing caves I've ever encountered. The entire hill countre west of Buda is fantastic and the place is booming, in less than 2 years, it has sprawled out like some sort of mess though. If you didn't buy before April 2021, you probably are too late. Also, every once in a while, the local political scene gets pretty stupid ideas and the entire downtown gets overrun by homeless camps and crime before a referrendum forces them to sweep things again. Some of the best restauranteers of California picked up shop and moved to Austin, best food by far imho. If you're into micro brews, check out Jester Kings and if you like a on the water, watch the sunset feel, I highly suggest the Oasis and Steiner Ranch. By the time I left though, the place had been growing unchecked for some time and the infrastructure was getting wholely overwhelmed. Austin was simply not designed for the number of folks that moved into it and they're constantly having to redo roads to try to make things work. Less expensive parts were still around but that was a while ago Pflugerville was an inexpensive area that put you pretty close to things. Go relax at the Domain on a Autumn evening. San Antonio has some fantastic areas on the north west side. Dominion, Boerne, everything all the way up to Fredricksburg is all fantastic. As a place to visit, the area around the river walk and the parks, zoo, etc on the north side make for the highest density of family friendly attractions for a quick vacation of the four imho. It's genuinely a fun town to go around and it's easy to get around too as the roads are more than sufficient. It feels like they built the infrastructure for way more people than the districts are actually designed to hold. As pat has mentioned, the place has a nice pleasant down to earth feel to it. Also, it has the easiest access to Corpus Cristi and Padre Island of the four and that's a great way to enjoy the gulf.

My wife's family moved from California to San Antonio and they were doing great financially. My wife visited and she liked it. So I said screw it! I got tired of living in roach infested apartments in southern Cali (one bedroom) and paying $1200 per month. And that was back in 2010! We moved to San Antonio and we were able to get into a modest home in 2012 for $170k. Now my mortgage is $1200 per month. It worked out well for us.

Houston has an incredible arts, museum and theater scene. People most often speak about oil , but it is an incredible city for stem professionals like engineering , medicine , aeronautics and space. It’s also great for logistics as well. It’s start up tech echo system goes under the radar as well. It definitely wins in the area of cultural and ethnic diversity especially if you are an Afro descended person from any continent.

The largest METRO area is the DFW Metroplex followed by the Houston Metro Area. The largest individual CITIES by population in order from most to least are Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, and Fort Worth. You may have confused people when you mentioned San Antonio has the smallest metro area. It does, but the city itself is the Second largest in Texas.
@ogdnaemoc
@ogdnaemoc 6 ай бұрын
Actually SA metro is larger than Austin, for the moment as Austin catching up fast and may overtake it in 10-15 years. However, both cities will probably be considered one single megapolis as it almost has 5 million between the two and likely to double in population in the next 30-40 years. Also it has the best freeway system and easy to get from one place to another (not so Austin- worst freeway of any of the large metros) and will get even better with expansion of loop 1604 in the north and NW of the city.

@@ogdnaemoc I only went off the video creator's statement about SA having the smallest metro area. I never researched it because I live in DFW Metro Area, and I knew we have the biggest metro area. I don't do cities. Houston's traffic isn't quite as horrific as it once was but is still too big, Austin was always weird but has added insane to the convo, Dallas is struggling not to follow in some respects (but lots of varying suburbs to look at). I would probably choose San Antonio because many of the suburbs are still decent and the food might be the best of those. If you throw Ft. Worth into the mix, they might be in play. One thing to keep in mind with the Houston area is (not speaking from personal experience, just what my common sense tells me), you might want to live in the northern suburbs just for the fact that, when there's a hurricane (think Rita, Ike), if you're north of the city, you can generally "get out of dodge" sooner and faster and evacuate to Austin or Dallas (or anywhere else). Also avoid the southern areas of Houston, especially southeast portions of Houston (e.g., Pasadena), as they really smell from all the pollution from oil refineries, plastics plants, and the like.

There's a lot of bad stuff about Houston. The weather is miserable, the crime is scary, the sprawl is annoying, the hurricanes and flooding can be damaging, the traffic is crazy and drivers are even crazier, and outta all the big cities in Texas, Houston is definitely the most rude. HOWEVER, there's so many cool things about Houston (such as the food and the culture) that make it worth it by a long shot. Houston just has such an awesome fun vibe to it that makes it worth living here.

Dallas has the best light rail network, and DARTs bus system is probably the most expansive. If you want that, go to north or east Dallas (unless you're living city center). The suburbs also have the most walkable downtowns, the problem is that a lot of them (cough cough arlington and grand prairie) don't have public transit access to the walkable areas, but they do have city subsidized taxi services that are cheaper than uber so there's that.

If you want to be safe, I would certainly invest in a car. You absolutely will not regret it. Especially if you are a woman. The economy is just getting worse and worse and people are getting more desperate and it will only get worse very quickly so crime is rising everywhere. I would not want to be stuck on any public transportation in the times we are about to go through in this country

Houston has the best food option, especially if you like Asian and Vietnamese food. Plus, if you blessed enough to have a federal job in Houston, the GS pay is higher then DC! San Antonio is waaaay to expensive for what the city has to offer (from houses, apt to bars). Only entertainment/dining options are the Rim or Downtown. Everything is just dead in between. You either have million dollar homes in Alamo heights area or Dominion, or run down neighborhoods. The airport is small, which may be good, but most of your flights connects through Houston or Dallas. Only nice thing I like about SA is the pretty hill country, but that’s like 25 miles north.

To be honest you're making San Antonio look like it's a smaller city than Austin, but once people go down to San Antonio they find out that it's a very large city and once they drive out I-10 to Boerne they find out that it's much bigger then the Austin Metro. And that's because Austin grows along I-35 and there's not very much to the east or to the west of Austin, also for those of us who live out here in the Hill Country we know that there's a lot more Hill Country around San Antonio then there is in Austin. Way more Hill Country.

Sprawl isn’t anything to brag about, San Antonio also has some of the weakest suburbs of any large city, I can’t even name one good one other than New Braunfels. Meanwhile Austin suburbs are among the best in the country along with education, safety and population growth.
@fuckyouyoutube2834
@fuckyouyoutube2834 4 ай бұрын
@azulaquaza4916 urban sprawl? I'm sure you know that San Antonio isn't the typical City. Downtown San Antonio's basically a big tourist destination, most of the large employers downtown are basically the county the city Frost Bank handful of big Company one from China and I have no clue what the name is. and so most of the large employers are going to be along or near , I-10, I-35, 281 North, 281 South, 151, 181, Highway 16, Highway 90, Loop 410, Loop 1604, and because of that of course there are going to be malls, shopping centers. Because Builders are going to build subdivisions around these businesses! Therefore it's not urban sprawl! Typically large cities that have urban sprawl are very different from the city of San Antonio! Because San Antonio is more like a city that has a lot of towns around it that might seem to be urban sprawl but really what to most people that aren't from the area would considered urban sprawl. For instance I-10 and 1604, most of the people that live in that area are very well off so they have their own type of Mall. Type of mall that is only for those who are very wealthy. It's called La Cantera. And nearby is the Rim, and because San Antonio attracts so many tourists of course there's going to be Bass Pro Shop, iFly, Andretti's, Top Golf, not to mention Six Flags and so many more attractions. And because so many wealthy people live out there of course there's going to be Maserati dealership all kind of high-dollar car dealerships like Maserati and the like. But you have to understand that every part of the city where there are companies in that area are going to have their own unique attractions just like every town is different from another. Every part of San Antonio is going to be just like that because as I mentioned San Antonio is a very unique City and that's why it attracts hundreds of thousands of people and the main reason why it's growing faster than I wish it would. And by the way I might work in San Antonio but I live near Bandera Texas.

Like rich cultural diversity, many lakes and parks, beautiful wildflowers in the summers, 6flags amusement park, as well as many water parks, job opportunities, and museums. I would also like to mention with the rising minority prejudice, I still feel safe and accepted as I go about my day to day life in DFW.
