Elderberries are AWESOME, but so are their FLOWERS!!! It's the time of year that elderberry bushes are blossoming. Collecting and drying elderflowers will keep you prepared for cold and flu season as well as allergy season. Sarah and Kevin gather elderflowers. Sarah teaches how to dry the flowers and about the health benefits.

As a young girl, I collected elderflowers every year for my mother to make Elderflower Champagne.........an old Cotswold recipe. Here in New England, the timing of the Champangne to the harvest was such that the Champagne was just ready on New Year's Eve to toast the New Year.

My dad used to make elderflower sparkling wine. They are very common in Germany. Elderflower syrup is also great.

Elderflower is also a diaphoretic so it also helps with breaking fever

Angie Krajewski there are also different varieties...at least in our area there were...the ones with red berries were considered toxic but the purpley black berries were edible. Gotta make sure you read up on your plants really well before eating wild edibles! 😁

Nice video. I recently discovered a bush growing next to my oak tree. I had a suspicion that it might be an elderberry bush. Once the flowers blossomed..I confirmed it was. Probably need to thank the birds for delivering the seeds...lol.

I was thinking that if you wanted the wild roses you should get a cutting. The older roses will root very well. I have a rose that my nanny got a cutting from around 50 years ago. The lady she got it from had gotten a cutting from her mother and law. When she got married as a wedding present. And I would say she had been married over 40 years. So I could say it's probably cuttings that I can speak for over 130 years ago it never gets diseases like my others do and I cut it way back all the time. Love all the info on the flowers.

Living Miracle Homestead wild roses are not as easy to root as domestic ones. Much better to mark and dig them up in fall after it cools down. Otherwise it's a less than 25% rooting. I've tried for a few years. Finally dug one and now they are growing crazy

Thanks for that info it sounds pretty cool... we knew someone who's neighbor had a rose bush that was over a hundred years old and those blossoms for absolutely humongous and smell way better than anything in modern times

Yep elderflower blossoms deep friend.. Also great to cook elderflower sprig with gooseberries, I make a gooseberry & elderflower fool, also a jelly which goes great with fish& just spread on toast. Elderflower cordial is fantastic.... push the boat out & make elderflower champagne now that is fabulous.

Great video, I did not know about the flowers and funny my first thought was dunking them in batter and frying them :) I have 2 bushes I planted last year, it does not grow wild in my country so I will have to see once they start flowering if I want to sacrifice some berries to pick flowers :D

I miss living in MO so much!!! We lived in Callao near Macon. Had to move because of hubby's job. Oh what I wouldn't give to move back because there are many back roads full of this and thats!

Great video. However the leaves are also medicinal. Especially for deep respiratory concerns and was recommended by a renowned herbalist for the 2021 virus.

THAT is a beautiful background. I couldn't stop looking at the red barns and that metal thing. Is it something from a wagon? Is that ALL your property or are the barns "across the street"? There was not 1 car going by through the whole video. Back a few videos ago I saw the first car ever driving up your road and Kevin even turned and looked during his talking! SO PEACEFUL! I am commenting in Jan of 2021 and I can't wait to continue on in my journey through your videos chronologically. You guys are THE best.

Elder flowers are best (I think) with tempura batter. Light as a sigh. It's been a long time since I cooked them, but they are totally delicious, deep fried. They don't need a thing, but perhaps a little salt.

I believe the rose was a Multiflora Rose which was declared a noxious weed in Missouri in the 1980s. Be cautious you do not get it on your property. Although they are beautiful, I can remember when they took over fields before MDC started an eradication program

Do you know if the elderberries themselves are also good for constipation, or is it just that flowers?

I don't know about elderberries, but most fruits (especially stone fruits & figs) are laxative because the plants hope their animal consumers will poop out the seeds. I have never had an issue with constipation (if I eat something that is "off," the opposite occurs), but can verify that if you eat lots of prunes or even several pounds of Bing cherries at once, you will spend a lot of time on the toilet.
