LM 90 [REACTION/ANALYSIS] AYREON - Day Seven, Eight, Nine and Ten

Spontaneous reaction to the songs / musical pieces "Day 7 - Hope", "Day 8 - School", "Day 9 - Playground", and "Day 10 - Memories" from the album "Ayreon - The Human Equation"" in two versions (Lyrics video and live video ). The whole album will be covered : 1 hour and 40 minutes of music, divided in block of 10-13 minutes. Ten videos / ten weeks in the music of this exceptional artist.
According to Wikipedia, "Ayreon is a musical project by Dutch songwriter, singer, musician and record producer Arjen Anthony Lucassen. Ayreon's music is described as progressive rock, progressive metal and power metal sometimes combined with genres such as folk, electronica, experimental and classical music. The majority of Ayreon's albums are dubbed "rock operas" (or "metal operas") because the albums contain complex storylines featuring a host of characters, usually with each one being represented by a unique vocalist."

I just received a vinyl record form Arjen Lucassen's Star One. All the albums are a complete package. A beautiful gatefold album, with 2 albums, a cd, a sticker, a complete booklet and his autograph. This is a composer, brilliant as he is, is so down to earth. And takes the time for fan's / music lovers.

The Doubling in day 10 was just wonderful and so inventive and suits the themes of different parts of him resonating to different events of his life. I can't wait for next week.

Day 8: Ah. Now we're getting somewhere. Learning something. When Passion comes in, I can't help but imagine every drumming and vocal accentuation as a punch or a hit with some tool, of course, accompanied by that delicious release of pent up anger and shame. Finally getting back at your bullies is a very powerful, emotional experience, even if there's an anchor of being labeled a loser and a failure by the father that skipped town. At that moment, you're free. It's only after that you get clarity on how childish and pointless your outburst was. That freedom is a hell of a drug, though. Day 9: Just a merry-go-round of growing up, the melody remaining the same, but the instruments slowly changing. Brilliant in its simplicity. What's holding him back? It will be revealed. Be patient. Observe his growth.

Thank you very much for your great analysis, I thoroughly enjoyed it, as usual! Day 9: Playground may be an instrumental track, but just like you said, it is so evocative that no lyrics are necessary - the way it starts with a subdued sound, as if Me was yearning for the kind of joy and connection that he'd never had with his peers; through that middle section which erupts with the soaring guitars and strings, representing (to me) his budding sense of confidence and self-identity, for the better or worse. It's true that Arjen can create fantastic imagery with the sounds he picks! I also wanted to point out that I really love the lines of Rage, which I believe Devin Townsend wrote himself (or at least co-wrote with Arjen). There is something magical about the simple juxtaposition of arguably the most 'primal' emotion having some of the most poetic and nuanced lyrics on the whole album! I really look forward to the next video - both Day 11 and Day 12 are definite stand-outs from the album, and so is the stage re-creation of those songs. I would even go as far as saying that the streak form Day 11 to Day 14 is the most intense emotional roller-coaster on the whole album, smoothly sailing through the entire spectrum of moods. And to top it off, Day 11 Love has another of those funny little lines/moments that I think you will enjoy :) I'm curious to hear your thoughts in a week!

I actually really like Arjens voice on this album, he always poh poos his "limited sound" but it suits the friend character and is wonderfully human. As for the live section, although I really like it the lack of Devin Townsend as Rage gets me, being a big fan of his and how he layered his parts.

The medieval themes, and folk in general is very prevalent in the Ayreon universe, that’s actually how I stumbled on Ayreon as a folkmetal fan

Thank you for journeying through this album with us. These songs hit hard to me, for other live performances got me and that I'd recommend from Ayreon are 'Intergalactic Space Crusaders' (actually a song from Star One, another of Arjens projects) and 'When the Druids Turned to Stone'. These ones are a nice set of fun and deep.

Arjen likes the Medieval influence. Ayreon (the character) in the Ayreon Universe, is a Medieval musician who is given the prophecy of the fate of mankind and tasked with warning them of a future filled with war and destruction, that will end man's existence on Earth.

There are 2 things about RAGE: first one: Human refers to the layer where the singer says it: Human!! human! human!. The second is: the singer for this part is Devin Townsend from Canada; he is a very talented composer, but is a jealous artist that doesn't like to sing something from someone else, so Arjen let him write his lyrics... and it end up in something quite surreal.

I would love to see this get picked up by a theatre troupe and go on a circuit, but the caliber of singers that this one holds would be hard to match.

Pour être vraiment franc, dans le courant de l'histoire, je n'ai pas trouvé de sections faibles, jusqu'ici. Mais pour une écoute "séparée" ou détachée de l'album, oui, c'est une pièce qui s'exporte très bien.

@@GuylainPrince Oui, c'est vrai. La prochaine semaine, pour la version live de Day 11 et 12, il y a une petite reprise entre Day 10 et Day 11. Commencez la video depuis la fin de Day 10, vous n'allez pas être déçu.

Perhaps, in the future, you will be interested in doing a reaction/analysis of the album In the Passing Light of Day by the prog band Pain of Salvation. It's a concept album about the band's lead singer (that has appeared on an Ayreon album) who contracted an infection from a flesh-eating bacteria that nearly killed him. The songs go through themes like love, anger, regret, sense of belonging, will to live, religion and obviously other things we think about when we realize our fragility and see death approaching. I think it's a wonderful album. And a great example of how, even in dark moments, we manage to create something beautiful.

Gotta say, I love that smile. Too bad that after Day 11 we won't be seeing it too much until the finale. Act 1 is about to end. Won't spoil things, but... This much was obvious by the original album being split into two CDs. Separate Acts. Separate moods.

My smile is not triggered by the content only. It is by the music and the general artistic choices. I did 11 and 12 yesterday and my smile was full face, many times. Let's see the next week!

@@GuylainPrince Day 11 is one of the happiest songs. Day 12 is a small taste of things to come. I'll stop myself from even hinting at things, though and let you experience the album for yourself with a clean slate, nothing coloring your reaction to what's to come in any way other than I already have. Can't wait for the premiere(and for the epic finale that Ayreon albums are known for, but that's besides the point).
