Nah, Hammer was an outlier. He was overtly poppy at a time when that led people to question his legitimacy as a rapper. Now that hip-hop is much more pervasive in culture, it's evident there was room even then for all different approaches to rap, including his, but he was definitely a bit controversial among the hardcore hip-hop fans in the day.

MC Hammer was not taken seriously for a very long time, but retrospectively, he has been recognised as one of the main rappers to truly bring rap to the mainstream. It’s almost impossible to overstate how HUGE this song was. It was played everywhere, all the time.

The other rappers were jealous because Hammer’s music was mainstream. Could be listened to by wider audiences. More money for him. He was smart 😂 money 💰. They were too busy thinking tough. Hammer had his own cartoon character and lunchbox at one time. The haters will hate. That was just old fashioned jealousy 😢

True story, back in the early 90s when I was still a college sophomore, I went to a record store to buy some records and I heard this girl who kept arguing with the saleslady about a song she wanted to buy. She kept insisting the song title was Compact Disc and the sales lady kept telling her there was no such song. When the saleslady finally asked her to sing a few bars of the song so she could find out which song the girl was talking about, the girl hummed the chorus riff "tan tan tan tan, tan tan, tan tan" and then yelled "Compact Disc!" instead of "U can't touch this". I nearly choked from trying to keep myself from bursting into laughter and ended up coughing up a lung.

The controversy was Rick James accused Hammer of stealing his song and sued him. From my knowledge, the case was settled out-of-court and Rick was given songwriting credit. IMO, it was a sample which was standard in Hip Hop and actually gave original artists some recognition and popularity.

We videoed it and still get a kick out of it to this day he is now 31. Now he’s playing the video for his own one-year-old daughter. It is a classic

Yes, I hope proper credit is due to Rick James here. Yes, Hammer could dance his butt off, and the genie pants were cool and all that... but this was one of the first instances of the sampled groove contributing more to the success of the tune than any other factor. Those not old enough to be able to spot the (IMO) plagarism need to be LET KNOW!!

4:41 Iconic. Hammer was known for his moves in a time period when Michael Jackson was at the height of his stardom. That should tell you something. He was an enormous celebrity and the first major rap star who crossed over to all audiences. I remember the kids at my school were crazy for this song. One day our PE teacher put it on during our warm up and was shocked at how our class just came alive. People loved to get funky and just let it all out to this song. Where MJ was super smooth and refined, Hammer was funky and jerky enough that everybody felt comfortable dancing to this because he was clearly about the hype and energy and less about the refined grace (he was a great dancer/choreographer though). He had some other major hits during this time period. 2 Legit 2 Quit comes to mind. He sort of became so big that he was everywhere and people burned out on him, and by the time gangsta rap exploded onto the scene, Hammer seemed too wholesome and outdated by comparison. He tried to adapt to the times, releasing a more "gangsta rap" type sound, but audiences had moved on. He was massive though and a big part of why rap crossed over into the mainstream. You can even find clips of him performing at award shows and audiences get into it, especially when he does the "hammer dance" at 4:41. In the same way Michael Jordan's silhouette is synonymous with him, or the moonwalk with Michael Jackson, the Hammer dance and Hammer pants are recognizable as part of Hammer's brand.

Cool how he got the nickname "Hammer." Growing up, he was a batboy for the Oakland A's and Reggie Jackson noticed his resemblance to Hammerin' Hank Aaron. Our local newspaper printed a great photo of the two next to each other when MC was a kid and Aaron was playing for the Milwaukee Brewers (easy to find in Google Images).
