@@roboto420@roboto420 the ability to turn off the web search function gets reset every update if you adjust the registry entry Disabling the web search now requires disabling the search indexer via registry which can be helpful for some but fundamentally breaks the search function on anything more than a single small SSD Most versions of Linux let you select exactly what your quick search function searches for and indexes from the user interface

If a company is providing continuous service, like a telcom, I think that's a good use-case for a subscription. I think the people who finance their phones with that subscription, are pointlessly paying a lot more money for their phone than if they would just buy it in one transaction. The telcom is providing continuous service, but in the case of a phone, its a bank providing the financing service, which is completely pointless unless you're very poor. I don't think Windows is providing continuous service. Once the operating system update is deployed, that service ends until the next one is deployed. Windows doesn't make your PC, they just write code that makes your PC more convenient. You're not going to convince me that Windows should be a subscription model, because for the last 30 years they've proven that their current business model is fine. I'm fine with lump payment for a major update, but not for security updates, because the security of Windows is just as much as a liability to Microsoft as it is to me. Essentially, Microsoft isn't doing those security updates to provide value to users, they're doing it to avoid being sued by their users. I don't think a Windows Subscription is equitable to the customer because an Operating System provider can not provide commensurate updates per/month to go along with my monthly payment. The needs of users are just not that emergent when it comes to the OS. Operating system features move very slowly and the value of them varies greatly from person to person. Also Microsoft will be under pressure to provide new updates more frequently, which will just turn Windows into something ridiculous like World Of Warcraft, where they have to keep inventing new things and hyping them up so it seems like you're getting value for your monthly sub. Operating systems are already too bloated. I would like to see Software Providers choose business models that don't favor pointless features and more boat.
@shanemitchell477
@shanemitchell477 6 ай бұрын
@@Necropheliac I disagree with you. Microsoft does not HAVE to issue security patches. MS-DOS had no security patches, and yet there were viruses and hackers back then as well. Microsoft is also something you don't HAVE to HAVE. You can have a computer with no O/S at all if you want. What I am saying is, you have choices, everyone has choices. This is what capitalism is about. You go to the store because you need shampoo. You can choose A. Shampoo, B. Shampoo, or even decide not to wash your hair. It's all up to the consumer. There are many programs that have subscriptions. World of Warcraft comes to mind first, but there are also others. Paying for a windows subscription would not bother me whatsoever. If you like, then you can switch to Linux. Or you can switch to apple. or you can just use android devices. I ALWAYS buy things outright with cash. If I don't have the cash, then I don't buy it. I literally owe no company, no person, no hospital and no doctor any money whatsoever. How is that possible? Save up until you have the money to buy or do what you like. If you don't make enough at your job, work harder, get another job. I worked 17 hours a day 6 days a week for 19 years.

@notjustforhackers4252 As far as I am aware, the keys are only stored on their servers if you allow that and have the keys linked to your microsoft account, which isn't a requirement to use bitlocker, as you can use bitlocker with a local PC account completely offline. There has been no evidence of any backdoor or security issue with bitlocker that I am aware of. That said veracrypt is an excellent solution for people who would prefer to go down that route. It just runs the risk of breaking with windows updates and such.

Microsoft not actively fighting piracy to keep their OS market share monopoly has been going on for WAAYYY longer than Vista. In the early 2000 my friend was installing XP from a not-so-legally-sourced disc copy and a CD-key scribbled on the case. After the installation the old "Windows Genuine Advantage" kept popping up. We clicked, we clicked, it couldn't connect to the internet (rural area), then we got a phone number for Microsoft Call Center. And us being dumb kids called and explained what was going on blissfully unaware that this was an act of unauthorized copyright. The guy from Microsoft only asked where did we get the copy from. We said it was from a friend. He just gave us the activation code, no futher questions asked.

General audio device management and switching has been working amazingly since Ubuntu LTS22. Before it had about the same level of annoyances as windows but the workarounds could be automated easier/cleaner. One example would be I had to almost always after wake up disable and reenable the headset for it to work in the audio settings. Ubuntu had something similar, so I guess it was about timings and firmware boot ups. But there I could just add all the audio restarts/scans that could be required into one script. So I would just do em preemptively every time in case they where necessary. While under windows it was: Oh, it doesn't work again. So it's time to push the GUI for 2 minutes because there is no other interface to this. Yeah, windows was so much easier, try to explain that 2 minutes of GUI pushing to the average user. In my experience the best case would be a 5 minute phone call, but realistically 15 minutes. Still waiting for this system that "just works".

Windows 11 just had an update two days ago, then another two today. Two days ago, the update gave us a new File Explorer, which came with the removed drag-n-drop functionality of the address bar for the folder's location. Meaning you can no longer simply drag folder C in folder B up to the address bar and drop it into folder A that's the folder where folder B is located in. I hope this is just a bug, and that they failed to fix it in either of the two updates they had today, but will fix shortly, cause I frequently used that address bar to drag-n-drop folders and files between folders, and having to use the left navigation panel is a pain in the butt, and ctrl+x and then ctrl+v is only slightly better as still takes more time than simply dragging and dropping.

The point Linus missed is the majority of the consumer market doesn't upgrade their OS by upgrading software but by replacing the entire thing. The entire thing meaning going to ta PC store and buying a new one. So Microsoft isn't missing that much revenue by offering free upgrades when almost no one uses it. The DIY market uses it but the majority if the rest of it not all of it do not use the upgrade but replace the entire machine. For the AI features yeah I can see them charging for AI features though intellisense shouldn't be charged for as it runs locally and you have to pay for visual studio pro and enterprise. Most do not use visual studio community so the user already paid for the AI that runs locally and to upgrade it the have to get the next version that for the professional and enterprise versions you pay the 1 time payment for. For most of co-pilot if it wasn't an open source github project that you can run locally then i would agree with Linus. The reason why Microsoft does it for you is most users don't know what an API key is nor how to obtain one from OpenAI. Congratulations Linus that is how LLM AIs work. Reinforcement learning is the most used method of how they order the data it pulls from.

It doesn't auto-reactivate anymore, that bit broke, but I only have to re-run a batch file once every 180 days or something like that. I have legit windows on everything at this point anyways, but occasionally I use it for new installs for one off machines or projects, and its still happily working away.

Windows didn't recognize my main computer as the same computer after I replaced all it's guts, then I installed windows onto a very old machine to digitize some audio reels, and then I just recently built a portable PC in an ammo can. The watermark does get annoying while gaming, but I don't know if it is worth the cost or the risk to get rid of it with either a legit or sketchy key.

Not negotiable: - If you push a bad patch, I get my money back. - You do not force me to use cloud accounts, cloud storage, cloud services, or cloud anything. - You don't collect and sell ANY of my data. You're making money from me already. - If I stop paying, I get to keep whatever version I'm on, I just stop getting updates.

It's possible right now. Imagine what in 5 years

The reason they have the ChatGPT features and what not free is so people get use to it in the market. Then they can charge. If they released it from the start as a paid feature then it would have gone no where and just be a fancy paid gimmick that only a few people would have bought. If they use the 80/20 rule and 20% of their 1.4 billion users pay 10-15$ a month thats 28-50 billion a year with a Free/premium model. Thats a lot of revenue.

Imo, it's likely enterprise features for consumer use. So alot of the features from Windows Server are pretty cool and for small-businesses, would be VERY helpful and as such, would be the equivalent to a 'office 365' subscription in order to get those features. Like take the industry software that people use, that could very easily and securely be integrated into windows, like Anydesk, or remote management, or Domain storage space sharing. These would be features that would incur maintenance fees for Microsoft and as such, cant be a free feature.

You can make it as open or as closed as you want. Due to them both being UNIX, MacOS also gets a lot of Linux ports for various programs such as Wine, which is a major base of Proton, and with Whisky, a user friendly version of it, being a thing now, it’s quite easy to use. Pirating windows is incredibly easy, and easily permanent. I won't name the tool, but there's a tool that, when installed, uses the windows 7 loophole (it still works last I checked) on a windows 10 or even 11 machine and automatically steps it up for you. The end result is $0 spent on a 100% genuine copy. You can reformat it, upgrade, etc. The windows license is registered with Microsoft so it shows up on your account and everything. You just didn't pay for it. Gone are the days of kms where you had to install a service that reauths it every 30 days. I've got two pcs both running 11 pro that have been going for 5+ years with no issues.

Ok, so a couple things. 1. It's not easy to upgrade and/or get rid of a pirated license because MS simply wants to have the monopoly. I'm sure it is an added bonus, but big corpos don't simply do free for the sake of free. You are the product, not the OS. That is how they make money. And the fact that one of the first thing a fresh install does is call data collection servers is more than enough proof of that. 2. I cannot believe that people now are unironically ok to pay subscriptions long term to get rid of ads rather than actually fight for owning your goddamn PC. Guys, guys. How about one time purchase to get a product that works properly and doesn't have ads and tracking? I know, a wild idea. Owning something without being exploited. "Oh but you get it for free with optional subscription to get rid of the disgusting stuff." You know what is cheaper than free adware with long term subscription? Single time purchase. With the LLM stuff being subscription stuff I can actually agree. That is external stuff that has server costs, yes the argument is legitimately sound, but the fact that you somehow came to the conclusion that it would be ok to do the same with ads?

The whole co-pilot discussion sounds more like user error than anything, which is almost always the case with AI right now, it's just a tool, the user still needs to be competent at using the tool just like google search, anyone can use it, but others can use it far more effectively if you know how. If it's asking/mentioning topics you ended already, you need to close the thread and open a new one, yes it should do this for you, but it's not quite there yet and will probably be a few years before it can really understand human behaviour on top of its language model.
