They should have saved more of the buggers. Alfred Draper in Neptune Street Hull Yorkshire cut his way through most of the 409 B1 examples. He did manage to save a Black 5 though, and promptly named it after himself... It's something I suppose. A locomotive as scrap is the same as any other item of scrap metal, it turns a dollar, so you can't blame Draper for sawing through around 700 locos. It's all about coin and providing work for others. Dai Woodham saw the potential to save around 300 locos in various states by selling them off to enthusiasts so they could perhaps live again. B1 61264 here is one of his. The only example that came his way I believe. I've had the distinct pleasure of being pulled along by this magnificent engine, even though my wife thought I was going bonkers. I don't particular favour the green livery of Mayflower, having grown up after the war with these beasties rattling past my street end, all black and sooty. That's how I remember them...

I'm glad one of the B1s is painted in a proper lner livery, makes a nice change from the over usage of British railways colors , and crests, at LEAST IN MY OPINION.

It's kind of ironic that my second favourite class of the LNER locomotives is Thompson's B1 Class, considering my favourite is Gresley's P2 Class (with the Bugatti Streamlining), and how I feel about what Thompson did to them. Still slightly annoyed I managed to miss Mayflower passing by on the mainline recently, unfortunately as always life got in the way.

Fun fact the thompson B1s ended up with the most infamous Nickname that Stuck the most because of a Board Of Director of the LNER Specifically requested to have an engine changed because of one such member of the class called Bongo Was tasked with hauling a frequent boat train It was often assigned to that same train. He was on. He didn't want an engine with such a silly name like that because of that Word gone around And workmen started calling the Thompson B1s "Bongos" Just to annoy this one Aristocratic director It goes to show how fun it is to piss off. The higher-ups with such a nickname like that. Because it's stop for many years to come. And it still is one of the best nicknames for such a successful locomotive. If anyone doesn't know what i'm talking about the Video about it from train of thought. I've seen them both On the main line and on the great Central.

i do love those electric head lamps on the LNER loco's. not sure why they dont just use those instead of the paraffin lamps? they can set to display the correct codes.
