This is my 4th set. Not using oils kept me from having an itchy scalp. I’ve never oiled my scalp with this 4th set. I’m 13mths in

I never used oils either and still had a hellish itch. The kind of it h that makes ur mouth water 😬. It lasted for a few weeks (2-3 I think) but it was intense enough that I had to change my approach.

This is my third set. My trick for itchiness and dry scalp/locs is drinking a ton of water. I use Amla oil sparingly, along with rosewater, but hair grows from the inside out, and water down your throat will result in juicy locs, I promise!

Itching can also be because of products used during the process of installing.. I’m a cosmetologist who does her own locs and NEVER experienced itching that’s considered unusual

I’m almost three years locd and I love it!! I love thick locs ❤️ My locs are medium to thick. Over time my locs just “plumed” up. The ones near my nape or edges are medium size. I wish I knew that I could have started my locs on my own. I only had my locs professionally done once and that was my installation. Only retwist once or twice per year. Now I didn’t feel itchy scalp from my installation. I had flaky scalp due to not washing for three weeks. That was the worst feeling ever, lol. Being a loose natural for nine years I was use to washing and conditioning weekly. Your locs are beautiful!! Great video!!!

Hey Tif, thanks for sharing. I hope to get to only twisting once or twice per year. I'm going to give it a shot next year so fingers crossed. This year I've averaged every two to three months but even though I twist them, I don't keep a style long enough for my twists to stay. That one professional visit may have saved you from the itchy scalp madness. LOL

This fact SIGNIFICANTLY impacted my journey in the very beginning. I was freeforming in the beginning but ended up twisting it cuz I thought I had done something wrong. I haven’t twisted at all in abt 2yrs but I’m still resentful of that unexpected itching.

Moisture moisture moisture!! And GIRL SULFUR 8 IS MY FAVORITE!! I used that, water and oil to train my scalp because I used to have to wash my hair once a week as a loose natural. And with locs thassa no no so I have trained my scalp to endure a 2-3week style without the incessant itching and flaking. Spraying with water daily and massaging really helps too! And also drinking lots of h2O, the usual suggestions. 😊 You and your locs are so beautiful btw.

You are the first person I have seen that did not cut their hair to start locs. I wish I knew this before. I should have done more research. I had a hard time getting use to very short hair. I had itchy scalp with my first set within 2 to 3 days, I couldn't go two weeks like that so I washed it. I say it was the products used at the salon because it felt better after I washed it out. I got it redone with just a light Jojoba oil and water this time and I didn't itch. Now I use rose water and oil to moisturize and the medicine the dermatologist gave me to wash. I know now not to OD on anything in my hair (even the oil and water) or my scalp will scream.

I also experienced crazy itching. I found that I had to stop using certain shampoos and oils. Now I use Dr Bronner’s Tea Tree, Rose Water with Rosemary and Peppermint EO, and apply Jojoba oil to my scalp.
