As dawn breaks on the start of our second year, it's time to break out the shovels, get to landscaping, and finally get a start on the long-awaited castle! A heavy temporal storm also rolls through, netting us a tidy profit!
If you'd like to support the channel, please consider hitting the Join button. I don't have much to offer in return just yet beyond my gratitude, a world download of this seed generation, and a shout-out in each video, but I'll make sure my cats know who bought them dinner! :)
The next SolSaysWhat segment is planned for Episode 13! If you want to submit a line of dialogue or short monologue to be acted out in a future 'Sol Says What' segment, be sure to include #SolSaysWhat along with the character or type of voice you'd like it read in!

Great start to the castle! However, with those open and unlit basement areas... As I discovered in the first Guide season, rifts will happily spawn partway underground, and since a rift in darkness can spawn drifters ANYWHERE, you may end up with drifters popping up on the surface even during the day under the sun, and in well-lit areas!! 😮
@Solstin
@Solstin Ай бұрын
Ahh right... I forgot, you even mentioned that again while building the hobbit house and filling in the gaps on the upper floor in season 2. That helve hammer setup might be an even higher priority then so I can mass produce some lanterns! Worst case, it'll just be a workplace safety hazard until rooms are built down there. Some of the empty underground areas may be 20+ blocks tall until I get them sorted...

@@Solstin Agreed! I think once my first year is officially done I'm gonna add a few QoL mods, specifically the chisel related ones you have. They seem like they fit in the base game fairly well and it's all cosmetic anyway. Good luck on the castle, it's a massive undertaking for sure. By the way, a monolith would be way more fitting than a giant boiler in the middle of town, for sure! One thing I would like you to consider is to lower the sound of the background music and turn up the game sound. Bit of a ramble fresh off the 7 hour comp. And I can say with total certainty: You sir, are an Artisan! Not even bloviating, your chisling detail work is hypnotic, the kitchen work alone sold me. Would definitely recommend prioritizing the workshop ( if only to move fully out of that hovel for good) As for your next eventual bit of SolsaysWhat: How about Elder Arthur Maxson making a speech regarding the High Wizards who brought about these temporal abominations upon the land, and how it's the mission of all under the new Brotherhood to bring the end of them wherever they are? Might be easier for ya than Danse. And for future reference, The Barns gonna need Airlock style doorways to stop animal escapes
@Solstin
@Solstin Ай бұрын
Thank you so much, I really enjoy the chiseling process and just how many options it opens up for customized builds! The workshop is going to take some layout planning (that I'll be working on while I'm on the little road trip I'll be heading out on tomorrow) but that, along with a chiseling studio, will be priority builds along with the castle for sure! I've already added a fence around the door to the barn while filming the "between the episodes" segment for the next video, so there shouldn't be anymore boar bust-out adventures!

One fun thing you can put under the gatehouse is a cheese cellar for Blue cheese. You don't absolutely _need_ one, but if you start ranching sheep and producing excess dairy, cheese pies could be nice. I mean, technically it puts the gatehouse at risk of undermining or demolition, but it's a single-player world and nobody plays with block physics for enough blocks to make undermining a viable castle siege strategy. Edit: Oooh, when you go out hunting, remember to mine up some more halite to replace what you use up preserving meats and pickling veggies.
@Solstin
@Solstin Ай бұрын
There's going to be so much open space under pretty well any given section of the castle, so it honestly would make a great blue cheese cellar. I don't know about under the gatehouse in particular, but I could put a building inside the lower bailey that's a wine and cheese cellar. :)

Dang this is gonna be good. You can have up to like 6 portcullises in one gatehouse as well so if you want to beef it up. Kaer Mohren is good but please, please, please dont forget the vaulting under the stone floors. Witcher 3 got so much right and then it just got some things so, so wrong. Also buttresses and flying buttresses are your best friend.
@Solstin
@Solstin Ай бұрын
Haha I think having 3 separate gatehouses to go through to get to the keep with 2 portcullises each will be enough. If I end up having any stone floors beyond the ground floor, there will for sure be proper vaulted support! Even wooden flooring needs proper supports. :)

Might i make a suggestion for the castle color palette ? Idk how historically accurate you want to make it but you could add limestone/chalk or plaster on some of the main keep buildings as a "whitewash/limewash" wich was done historically a lot especially on bohemian style castles in the 14-16th century (my favourit castle style). Then you can add red or brown bricks or darker rooftiles to make the walls really pop I'v been watching some historically accurate bohemian style castle builds on the other block game with Conquest Reforged resource pack and they just look really beautiful. I'd love to see something similar in VS if its possible 😊😁
@Solstin
@Solstin 15 күн бұрын
Oooo, I don't know if I'll do that on the curtain walls since there's already a lot to do and gather with them, but on the keep and more important buildings that's a really good idea! If I do end up deciding to add a bit of a limewash to the walls, I'll likely have it be in bits and pieces, getting more sparse as we move to "older" parts of the walls, as if it's been worn away over time and not maintained as well as the keep.

After a hectic few days, we finally got to settle down and enjoy the new video. It's a shame so much footage got lost to the potato times but it's great to see the castle getting started. I really struggle with making terraforming look reasonably natural after I've gone in with my tools, but the shaping you were doing in the timelapse looked really good.
@Solstin
@Solstin Ай бұрын
Yeah I tried to salvage the footage at first, but there wasn't much I could do, so I did what needed to be done lol For the terraforming, being able to glance over at my laptop screen that was filming the aerial time-lapse helped a lot with being able to see the general shape taking form! Though several hundred hours in the other block game also helps for getting a good feel for what will look at least semi-natural.

@Solstin
@Solstin Ай бұрын
That would be a pretty cool feature, but there's nothing like that in place at the moment. Right now quenching is only actually useful for things like shears and chisels for quick cooling, but for tool heads you can pop them straight onto a stick to make the tool without the need to quench. There's a lot of temperature mechanics the dev team has in the pipeline for the future, so maybe one day! If nothing else, that could be a great mod idea!

I'm really glad I got to know your channel. I just finished that 7 hour video and came here looking for more. By the way, a monolith would be way more fitting than a giant boiler in the middle of town, for sure! One thing I would like you to consider is to lower the sound of the background music and turn up the game sound. I may be the only one speaking here, but I think that sould be the correct ratio to let people enjoy the game as well as the commentary. I'm excited to see what else you can come up.

I'm definitely trying to find the right volume mix. I was told previously that the music was too low so I tried it a bit higher in this video. So there's still more toying with levels to be done for sure!
