Johnny Cash was a storyteller who used music to entertain his audience. His gift was he was able to instantly connect to his listeners. You can bet that most of this San Quentin audience hear the story of their own lives in this performance as the facts are that most of them didn't have a father to raise them either. That's why they laughed so easily to his words. It's a tragedy that so many our young people today are growing up with little influence from a father.

@@Roblockdn Seeing as San Quentin held some of the most violent long serving prisoners, who probably hadn't seen a woman in years, they may well have enjoyed the Carter Sisters, Johnny's support act and backing group rather more .... June ( later Cash's wife ) was alleged to have joked with the inmates, " We're just here to sing, so get your hands out of each others pockets !! ... In the mid 60's especially, June's sister Anita was a stunning looking woman ..

They are laughing because he was given the name Sue, a female name, in this storytelling song. They laughed also for the empty bottle of booze. This performance was done live in a male prison. Please react to, 'Man In Black', live version. It was done in a College or University setting.

Ok, so aside from the song called Hurt, which was a remake of a NIN song, this was one of the first Johhny Cash songs I heard. From what I gather, the father was always a pos. I imagine he wasn't a good husband or father. The only thing a mean spirited sob like that could understand is that a man has to be tough in this rough world. The only thing he could think of was naming his boy Sue so he'd have to toughen up quick. With a man like that, playing catch, or teaching his boy how to fish wasn't in the cards. So he did something he thought was a good idea... Well sonofabitch! It actually worked. An amazing song from an amazing storyteller.

It’s a Shell Silverstein poem. Johnny Cash was apparently a fan of this poem and he turned it into a song. That’s honoring the writer. Johnny Cash is great like this. Check out chicken in black. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/erqAbMKQ28-XlGg.html. He pokes fun at himself, self-deprecating humor 🤣😂. The prisoners of that era are also familiar with the poems of Shell Silverstein from assuredly the prison library. He also may not be referring to fighting with his fists, street pugilism. Or a lawsuit, given the context of the song 🎶 🎵 🎧 with the poem (🎶🎵 also includes Johnny’s Voice). It’s a spoof / parody on Man in Black: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/paqUZpV8ktOzhqs.html

@@Roblockdn Another interesting point is that Johnny Cash married June Carter Cash. She is Royalty in Country Music. Her whole family Starting with her Father & Mother, Aunts, Uncle and Sisters. They pioneered for inspired a totally new genre in country, and bluegrass music. There is a video of them performing together and it really gives you a glimpse into their love for on another. If your interested in checking it out "JOHNNY CASH & JUNE CARTER - JACKSON" Don't do VEVO it will get blocked. But they have one on the Johnny Cash Show Channel, I think is even better because they're both so young. Thanks
