Yes, but this was at a time when no normal live recordings could have gone that way. Johnny Cash's San Quentin recordings were quite abnormal, as such! I really love that whole record, and I wasn't even born at the time, I think. But it was one of the early records I found in my family's extended record collections before I reached my mid-teens

The beloved children’s poet and cartoonist Shel Silverstein wrote this song and this performance was the first time Johnny and his band played it - in front of a bunch of prisoners. Great stuff.

This song was written to be funny. Johnny Cash is his real name. He had so many great songs."Walk the Line", "Ring of Fire", "Folsom Prison Blues", and on and on.

Interestingly, "real" is sort of nebulous there. His birth name was J.R. (no actual first name just initials) When he joined the Air Force, they didn't allow initials on the form, so he used John R Cash instead. Then he started using Johnny for his music career. But he seemingly never actually went through any form of legal name change procedure, he just changed it and that was that.

Understand, Johnny Cash is the real deal, member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Country music usually tells stories, make you laugh, just like you are in this song. Hurt by Johnny Cash can bring you to tears or just a great story he does is the Legend of John Henry. Great reaction.

It’s not a true story about Johnny Cash. Just a made-up story set in the Wild West. Actually, his real life was a lot harder. He’s lived through much heartache.

The legacy of Johnny and June Carter Cash ( His Wife ) is an amazing rabbit hole to go down . They have a lot of songs together worth checking out . There is also a Movie about Johnny and Junes Life called I Walk The Line . That will really give you some insight into his life . He started out with Sun Records ( Same as Elvis ) around same time they where friends . His last video was shot at his home just a month before his wife died and just 4 months later Johnny passed away . The song is called Hurt . Hurt was actually a Nine Inch Nail ( NIN ) song . Trent the original singer was amazed by Johnnys Version . He said it was like Johnny could have written it back in the 60’s . Songs to listen too Man In Black ( Live Version ) Ring Of Fire I Walk The Line Folsom Prison Blues I’ve Been Everywhere Sunday Morning Coming Down Jackson ( with his wife June )

This song was written by the great Shel Silverstein who wrote a number of hits, (many for the group Dr. Hook). He did cartoon work for Playboy magazine, and also wrote highly acclaimed children's books. This song, if I recall correctly wasn't quite complete when Johnny sang it for the San Quentin Prison population, and he had to read the lyrics as he went. He later recorded it with a few more lyrics added on.

Meanwhile he's playing a song about violence and murder to an audience of convicts who cheer the hardest for the references to violence and murder, probably because half of them are psychopaths, lol. It's a joke I get it, but if this is when men were men, you can keep it. Maybe save that speech for another song.

LOL!!! I assure you this is not a true story! Haha! You see, songwriters in those days had what was commonly referred to as "imagination," thereby creating colorful, interesting stories in song -- sometimes sad, sometimes funny, sometimes thought provoking. That's what Johnny Cash could do, unlike many of the dull-witted nitwits of today who pass themselves off as (heh-heh-heh) "musical artists." This "talking song" is hilarious! It is the use of absurdity at its artistic best! It amazes me how today's generation take songs of the past so literally and with such overblown seriousness. Lol! It's true that the 50's, 60's, and 70's had its share of problems & dark days. But the songs, the music, the folk ballad stories, etc., for the most part, kept us lighthearted, carefree, upbeat, and hopeful in what could sometimes be a maelstrom of societal/cultural turmoil. By the way, I enjoyed your reaction, and I'm not picking on you. I believe you finally "got it" near the end. I've seen this interesting response from dozens of Millennial and GenZ reactors!
