Starting to make the bottom row on the log cabin. Dimensions are 3x3,7m. Using different type of axes to see which I like best in various situations. Had to use my big chainsaw because I forgot to bring my smaller sword for the smaller chainsaw. Got the job done though.
See part 2 here:
• Log Cabin Build | Maki...

Thanks for those kind words! And thanks for subscribing. Hopefully this cabin will be around for a long time. The oldest log cabin like this one in my area is from mid 13th century.

I think you have made the joinery to complex and tedious but most of all time consuming, at this rate a cabin will take ten years to build

I’m learning, and this is my first build, so it takes a lot of time 😅 I read that a experienced builder completes one “lap” per day. It takes roughly 10 logs in height for the walls.

I have a log wizard, but I don't like it, I did my cabin with a draw knife because it was a better job, and less work, and safer. That thing kicks back bad. I might like it better if I had a 6" bar, but dangling that cutter out there 18" is not safe or easy, its terribly hard to control and makes my back hurt using it.

Sorry to hear that you don’t like it. It feels good with a short bar. Can imagine that a long bar both feels heavy and unstable. Draw knifes is really good tools! Have you tried those debarkers with discs that Dewalt and makita makes?

@@simon__aslund yeah since I'm about done with my cabin I tried just about everything commercially available The biggest problem I had with the log wizard is controlling the depth If I had some sort of a depth gauge or something like that it would help a lot and of course like I said a shorter bar The rotary rasp thing was way too slow In the end the old-timers seem to know what they were doing and the draw knife worked fine

What I find interesting about this type of craft is the confidence needed to make measurements and cuts. If a mistake is made with stick framing the board is easily replaced. An error on a log and it's back to the beginning. P.S. it doesn't take long to get bloody knuckles doing this work does it?

Yeah, that’s right. It doesn’t show to much in the videos, but I spend quite some time at thinking. Especially since I’m a beginner. Sometimes I have to bring out my book with instructions on notches and such. But it’s fun 😃 I got a scratch on my finger. Mostly cause I forgot my club for hitting my chisel. So I had to use the back on my axe as a “club”. It slipped on the chisel and hit my finger instead. Dumb mistake 😅

the previous comment also seems to be right that a draw knife would be faster and produce better results

Thanks for your input and tips 🙌😄 The knot is quite complex. It’s a Swedish “Dalcarlian knot”. Though it’s time consuming it’s very tight, which is great for insulation. It’s one of the first ones I do, so it might come across even more time consuming than it actually is 😅

I think when you remove more the 50% of the log for a joint you are severely weakening the log / better to only remove a third from bottom log and two thirds from log that is to rest on it / believe the logs and joints will last longer and produce a stronger joint

Ліпше і більш праильно підгостри сокіри, зніми з них ,,пузо‘‘ , щоб був правильний клин, обушок в сокірах масивний можно по ньому наносити удари, коли мало лишилось припуску,легше точність витримати !
