LOGIC PRO X - Logic's Secret Plug-Ins that YOU need to know

With such a range of great-sounding native processors, Logic's own effects folder may be as far as you've allowed yourself to experiment, when it comes to sonic manipulation. But all Logic users have the opporunity to work with AU plug-ins too, both from third-party developers AND Apple's own collection of system plug-ins. These audio processing tools contain some unusual surprises and this week, we're going to take a first look inside Apple's AU Plug-Ins folder to experiment with the simple and yet remarkable NewPitch plug-in, as well as discussing the merits of different filter types. New FX to play with that you may well not have known even existed. What could be better?

Hi Jono. Happy new year to you ! ... I am an 60+ german guy with a head full of musical ideas and - for a year now - a small logic setup in my basement ;-) ... I "follow" you for about a year and I want to tell you, that I really love your attitude (I am not quite sure, if it is the right term) of "looking under every stone" if there is something hidden under oder something that can be "mis-used" ;-)) ... I learned a lot from your clips and following your thinking (as far as I could) and I REALLY enjoy walking down "discovery lane" with you. Thanks a lot and please keep up this inspiring work !!! ... if you ever plan to visit germany, I would be glad to get to know you in person ;-) ... cheers Manfred

Nice one Jono. The AU plugins are refreshing to use due to their simplicity. We often don't need all the gubbins that come with the big plugins. The AU's can be a digital detox for a while. They are good for learning concepts too. And hey, nothing can be the visual interface of the AU Multiband Compressor! 😀

So I just tried this: Applied AUSoundIsolation (preset: voice) to the full mixdown of an ambient piece , and thus tricked the plug-in into generating some nice glitchy vocal-like sounds, possibly to be used in the background. Compression recommended, as the output levels are very low.

Thank you, very nice. And an interesting notion that different plugins have their own characteristics, I always wondered how different one reverb or delay could be from another and if it is worth having serveral from different companies..

Hi Joeri. Absolutely, some of the most classic synthesisers and effects processors have taken their place in recorded music history because they offer a different ‘sound’ to anything else. This in turn can be traced back to instrument design, component choices and more besides. Our ears are so attuned to variations in harmonic shaping that even though some of these differences might be small, when measured, they sound significant. And that becomes even more true as the same instrument is used multiple times on different parts. I don’t know for sure whether the AU Filter is built on different code to Logic’s Autofilter but due to Logic originally being made by Emagic, I’d expect it to be. I wish you a good 2024, Jono! I am ok, but my Mac Studio unfortunately is not. It has been repaired a couple of times but it still is not working... I am busy creating a new album but that has stopped for a while...😐

That's a good question and not one I know the answer to. But what's great is that they really are quite different processors - lovely to have both options.
