This is an old video, but if anyone stumbles upon it, an “easier” way to create the stripes is to simply color the big hexagonal body yellow. Then you create 3 gray rectangles with an outline. Make sure they extend larger than the body. Finally you can clip mask them to the body and only the parts inside the body will show. Much easier than creating individual horizontal lines and then having to trace each shape.

Such a great video. It’s so good to see how you work. I’m just starting out as a freelancer and videos like this really help my confidence. Sometimes when you’re working in isolation you think you’re doing things wrong. But it’s actually a process which always leads to a final design that you’re happy with. Anyway. Thank you 😊

For the wings, you can just start with a circle then use the curvature tool to reshape it. Good job.

quicker way to make evenly spaced lines: 2 lines, 1 at the top and one at the bottom, select them both, use the blend tool and click each line. Double click the blend tool icon then select specified steps then pick how ever many you want. Then in order to edit each line you go to object > expand appearance :) hope that helps.

Great video! And I love the logo choice, you did such a cute one! I will say, I think you can also make the bee stripes even by making one line, holding alt and dragging down to copy and move it, and then control + D to repeat as many times as you need, which will make it equally spaced. Not better by any means, but another way (since you asked!) ;) I, too, am in my beginner stage and plan to start freelancing asap! So any videos you share or tips you can give me are most appreciated!

Love this logo! What I usually do in regards to colouring the individual rectangles, try highlighting all of the lines + the background shape (so the bees body) and use the pathfinder tool. Make sure all of your lines touch (use Cmd + Y to go into line mode to find out). I can’t remember which pathfinder option it is but I believe it’s the one that’s second in, and this should turn them into individual shapes. Alternatively, what I sometimes do is draw a standard rectangle and copy it however many times you want it, but make sure the top & bottom lines on the rectangles are touching. Highlight all of them and pull them down so that they’re touching the background layer (bee’s body). Make sure all the rectangles AND the bee’s body are selected and click on the Shape Builder tool. Hold alt and click on the overhang bits (the bits of the rectangle that extend over the bee’s body) to remove them, and then normal click on each rectangle to turn it into it’s own shape. I hope that makes sense! It’s very long winded 😂 I’ll happily explain it in more detail if you need it 😀

To do the stripes you might consider doing your 5 lines and space them equally as you originally did. Extend those lines out beyond the edges of the bee hexagon shape. Do make sure that the lines have no stroke or fill applied although the hexagon body can be coloured up with a stroke. Select the hexagon body, and the five lines, then go to pathfinder > divide (the first icon on the left on the second row of the pathfinder palette. Hope this helps. Really good video

Great Process, your video showed up in my feed, The only i want to say here is dont focus on how people do it, the best way to do anything is your way ! i absolutely enjoyed how you did this, but i'd only add is when you added the lines, you can create one and then press command D to duplicate it, and then select all lines and the background together and use the pathfinder tool to seperate the pieces to color them. it will minimize your process. hope it helps, and subscribed as well. 😊

You can use 'clipping masks' for the stripe and wings part. You'll be able to readjust and rearrange the wings without effecting the stripes. This method is non destructive and will save you a lot of time! Hope this was helpful.

Great logo. However the alignment of the top and bottom "E" in poet and bee should have been aligned to give it a more polished look. To do your coloring you can seperate the lines with the shape builder tool aswell .

If you right click on the shape, it gives you an option to arrange --> move to front, move to back etc.

just a simple tip; when you trace try to take down the opacity of the image u r tracing will help u see what ya doing.

Newbie here, I'm struggling with something. I have text running through an ellipse but I want to remove part of the ellipse where the text is running through. I cannot seem to figure it out. Any tips? I notice that in this creation there's a space where the BEE text is hanging over the hexagon shape and you have somehow managed to create that whitespace I am looking for.

When doing the bee stripes I would made black and yellow oblong shapes, combined them and then use your hexagon body and clip them to that shape. If you're still doing logo re designs I'd love for you to mess around with mine. Where do we send them?

So for the file you saved it as when you were completely done...the client was able to use in all ways as of print for business cards & stickers? I’m close to finish stage of a logo. It’s kind of my first time doing a logo but not my first time working with illustrator...it’s just been a really long time since I’ve worked with it so I had to work in getting familiar with it. I’m struggling & kind of nervous of how I’m going to give it off to client once it’s all finished so they can use it for what they want to do.

You don’t have to know how to draw... as long as you use shapes as your sketches.
