✨ Patrick Compton is an autodidact polymath, independent researcher, multi-instrumentalist, and woodworker focusing mostly on existential philosophy, neuroscience, psychology, sociology, and evolutionary biology. He implements pragmatic approaches to conquering mental and physical disorders, contends with partisan paradigms in education and politics, and seeks to widen perspectives by establishing transparency between the various sciences.
✨ He is the author of various philosophical essays under titles such as “The Tragedy of the Prison,” “The Car Metaphor and You,” “The Responsibility to Pursue Self-Betterment,” “The Trichotomy of Goal-Orientation,” “The Polymath, the Monomath, and the Institute.”
Many excerpts from his book “How to be Less Disappointed in Humanity” are referenced in these video series. He plays the Chinese guzheng and 8-string guitar and has released various albums on Bandcamp and here on KZfaq combining Eastern and Western influences, incorporating recorded sounds from nature.
✨ Captain Compton believes in humanity's potential and the duty one has to pursue one’s best self and navigate one’s best life. "The unexamined life is a life not worth living," and only through examination can we captain our complex Ship of Theseus through these ever-churning 21st-century waters.

The music makes it really hard to pay attention so i'm glad it stopped eventually but other than that i loved the video. I'm newish to Philosophy and you explain everything very succinctly and easy to understand. Subscribed! Looking forward to more. :)

One of my favourite quotes from Victor Frankln is this: Life is not primarily a quest for pleasure, as Freud believed, or a quest for power, as Alfred Adler taught, but a quest for meaning. The greatest task for any person is to find meaning in his or her life. Frankl saw three possible sources for meaning: in work (doing something significant), in love (caring for another person), and in courage during difficult times. I have since come to discover that meaning as Victor Frankl understands it is the final illusion one ought to dispel. I believe that once a person is in confluence with nature and not his ideals or his desires, meaning isnt a consideration. Eastern philosophy such as the Tao and Nietzsche's philosophy of Amor Fati come closest to this.

that is quite profound. And this doesn't sound like radical acceptance or anything, just a happy realization about how we're so addicted to ideals and desires. A rather stoic take as well.

I guess the word "need" is tricky. What I think I need or what do you think I need? :)

It's absolutely a human need, and often needs to be taught (blank slate/tabula rasa model). Thanks! Definitely read "man's search for meaning" too, it's a legendary book and I think you'll like it.

@@polymathpark I don't think it's an individual need but we all need other humans to practice morality. That's what I meant.

If I lived alone on a deserted island, there would be no need for morality but if there was another human on the island, that person would need me to practice it :)
