The London Underground was the first underground in the world, as well as the first tunnel under a navigable river. At the London Transport Museum we learn about the history of transportation and infrastructure that made London so famous.
The beginnings of tunneling and the invention of tunnel shielding was conceived here by Marc Brunel father of Isambard Brunel. Compressed air tunneling, tunnel shape and other improvements made by James Greathead lead to the creation of the " tube" which is also known as the subway in north america.
The underground steam railway was the precursor to the electric underground. It was hot, dirty, dusty and not something anyone would want to experience. Various improvements were made to the underground with eventual electrification.
There is much to see, do and experience at the museum. There is also a depot in another location with more vehicles to see!
