I applaud that you have attempted to decipher the Sikh tradition, however, here are some points of note: * The idea that the Sikh tradition does not have a Creation story Is not true. Hijab is right when he states that Naturalistic references are within the Guru Granth Sahib. * We do not believe in Pantheism, for we believe that Vahiguru transcends space and time and all materialistic phenomena (although maybe I misheard and it was Panentheism which was mentioned, I cannot tell). * Sikh scholars, during the time of the Gurus, openly engage in philosophical discourse and highlight that.the Sikh tradition itself is different from the Hindus and the Muslims. * We are believers of a non-dualistic framework, and that this is the true nature of the universe, which does not agree with the mainstream Islamic Madhabs (most of them at least). * We acknowledge the existence of different deities, if you will, but the Sikh tradition asserts that they all come from the One Allah and worshipping them is fruitless. * That being stated, we also believe in the divine attributes as enshrined in the Quran, the 99 names/divine attributes of Allah, and these attributes (many of them) are even utilised in the Guru Granth Sahib. * Yes, we embody the Guru Granth Sahib as a living Guru, however, Gurmukhi is not a dialect of the Punjabi language, it is a script created by the Gurus, and can be used to write different languages, like Braj, Hindi, Sanskrit, etc. * Like classical Abrahamic theism, Sikhs also believe that this world can be destroyed in an instant by the will of Allah, just as it was created by Allah. * Yes, Guru Nanak Sahib did go to Mecca according to our tradition(s), enshrined in the Janamsakhis, the Vaars, and even in non-Sikh sources, and not just Mecca, but some sources also that Guru Nanak Sahib visited Masjid Al-Aqsa. * An amalgamation does not really make sense, to be frank with you, we have huge theological differences with both Hindus and Muslims. You mention the rituals we do seem to be similar to Muslims, but you haven't elaborated which ones, could this be provided? * We deny the Final Prophethood of Muhammad Sahib, but we acknowledge that he was sent by Allah, and many other Bhagats, Peers, etc. and indeed was a Prophet of sorts (different from the Islamic sense). * We believe that the status of the Gurus is higher than that of Prophets or deities (and in continuation the Guru Granth Sahib), I am not sure what is being referred to when it is said that Guru Nanak Sahib affirmed the Prophecy of the Prophet Muhammad, is this more of a generality or something specific? * Guru Nanak Sahib and the other Gurus met people of all faiths, and crossed many territories, to state that they just learned in a Madrassa and Hindu Temple and therefore have no knowledge of comparative religion, that point does not really make sense, he traveled much more than most other major religious figures in history. * Aatma refers to the Self, or more specifically, the individual spirit within the body in the form of light (Jot-Saroop) which exists in all living things. Just some thoughts to jot down, I have watched most of the video, but not all of it, I think that if you frame this into a connection, or perhaps a philosophical inquiry into the Islamic tradition and dualistic/non-dualistic frameworks of other traditions (as well as within Islam itself), this discussion could be more fruitful.

This guy that was brought into speak on Sikhism is literally looking up stuff as he goes. Said he doesn’t know the Mul Mantar even though he had already recited chunks of. No hate, but perhaps next time it would be better to bring in somebody that is more knowledgeable. Would be better than bringing in someone who has to search up the info as they go. Would basically be the same as Muhammad being alone and google searching everything as he goes. I've always felt Sikhism began as a Thariqah but went too extreme, so much so, they made a religion.

Yes Br.Hijab the concept of God in Sikhism from a philosophical point of view is that it is pantheistic or anthropomorphic. The belief that God is Omnipresent. These key concepts are the fine details which lead to or are Shirk. The Islamic concept of God is that Allah is transcendent but yet his imminence or his qualities and attributes can be seen within the creation. These key ideas allows the philosophy of Islam to maintain a true concept of 'Tawheed'. This is what distinguishes Islam from every other faith on earth.

There is so much ignorance and misinformation in this episode. Perhaps it would have been better to have a discussion with a practicing Sikh, instead of 3 closed-minded Muslims who’s intentions from the get-go are not to understand, but to oppose anything that counters their dogmatic belief in Islam. There are 4 points I wanted to address to Mohammed specifically: 1. Sikhism is not an ‘amalgamation’ of Islam and Hinduism, and Sikhs do not believe that Guru Nanak simply took ideas from both religions and merged them together. There are stark differences between Sikhism and all other religions that emphasise its complete uniqueness, beginning with its creation belief, as Sikhism is the only religion that seems to align closely with contemporary scientific theories such as the Big Bang, Evolution, and the acceptance of possible life on other planets, in other galaxies. More importantly to your point on amalgamation, Sikhs believe the 10 Gurus received their message directly from God, and that the Gurus were living embodiments of God, not simply messengers like the prophet Mohammed, who took the words of the Quran from the angel Gabriel, rather than from God himself. As the Gurus took their word directly from God, it renders the argument that they amalgamated ideas from existing religions as false, in the eyes of Sikhs. 2. There is a difference between cutting hair and nails. Sikhs do not cut living hair, as it is seen as both a commitment to God’s creation, and also a representation of a distinct physical identity of the Khalsa. Sikhs do, however, remove dead hairs, and this is one aspect that the Kangha (wooden comb) represents. When one brushes their hair with a comb, or washes their hair in the shower, dead hairs are removed, painlessly. Similarly, Sikhs remove the dead part of the nail by trimming it. It is, of course, scientifically proven that it is only the matrix of the nail that grows, and is living, whereas the nail plate is dead. Like dead hair, the dead part of the nail can be removed painlessly. Hopefully this clears up any confusion you have over the apparent hypocrisy in Sikhs not cutting hair but cutting nails, as they simply remove the dead aspects of both. 3. Your understanding of the Sikh concepts of reincarnation and heaven/hell are rudimentary at best. Sikhs believe in all three of these concepts. They believe that the light of God is within all living things, and this light is on a journey back to God. The light goes through countless reincarnations, before it reaches human form, and this is it’s potential final destination before returning to the paradise of God’s realm, depending on how the human life is lived. If the life is lived well, then the light (soul) joins God, but if the life is not lived well, the light returns into the cycle of reincarnation. If the life is lived particularly badly, then Sikhs believe in the concept of a Hell, but unlike Islam, this is not a permanent hell, for how can a just God punish a finite life of sin with an infinite afterlife of Hell? Sikhs believe this Hell is a temporary purgatory, before the soul re-enters the cycle of reincarnation, and embarks once more on it’s journey to God. 4. I also wanted to make a point on the idea that Sikhs are misinterpreting history by denouncing the Mughal regime. It is a historical fact that the Mughals forcefully attempted to convert both Sikhs and Hindus to Islam, throughout India, including many of the Gurus themselves, and perhaps most famously, Guru Gobind Singh’s two youngest children, both of whom were bricked alive for refusing to convert. This level of intolerance of the Sikh faith is not hard to comprehend when one views how similarly modern-day Sikhs have been treated by fundamentalist Muslims of the Taliban in Afghanistan, a regime of similar intolerance, and founded upon the same type of fundamentalist Islamic principles as those of the Mughal Empire; an Empire that was ultimately defeated, incidentally, as the Sikhs endured, spreading their message of Love, Tolerance and the Oneness of Waheguru across the world.

Guru Nanak and the 9 Gurus were NOT muslims. They agreed with being of only One God, No Idols, No rituals, and it does not align with Islam. Islam and Sikhism are totally different religions. Guru Nanak agrees upon Sufism but not as per Islam's definition.

Often people these days think that the concept of tradition of Langar is the one from Sikhism. That's not exactly true. Historically, Sufis have always practiced the concept of Langar. It was Khawaja Moinuddin Chishti Sahib who brought this concept of Langar to India. His disciple was Khwaja Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki, whose disciple was Khwaja Fariduddin, Punjabi Sufi saint. Guru Nanak mentions Khawaja Farid in his books and takes inspirations from Baba Farid. Even today all major Sufi shrines have langar. In Ajmer Dargah's courtyard, people are fed daily and the food is vegetarian so that everyone can have it. It's just that Muslims these days have been distanced from Sufism, its teachings and traditions. Not just Langar but also other beautiful traditions like Khidmat-e-Khalq i.e serving the creation is serving the Creator. Sufis have always been those who have always wholeheartedly embraced the needy, poor and troubled ones with unconditional love.

It's interesting as a Muslim Punjabi hearing their belief, it a relatively new religion, and muslims were established in the region, definitely has a lot of Muslim influence. Even the language influence into Punjabi through the movement of islam is obvious. But hindi can differentiate it self from urdu and become difficult to understand, and there is a massive movement in India to distinguish hindi from urdu

One God concept is not the exclusivity of Islam. It is basically Hindu concept, so that means Muhammed borrowed the One God concept from Hindus.

Salams , Jzkl. Enjoying the series.. I just feel there could be better preparation from the presenters. The first brother who speaks after Hijab is very unclear. He speaks with a heavy accent, very low tone and seems uninterested. Surely there are better well researched speakers out there than him? He has appeared in the Buddhism video as well and it’s the same issue.

I was speaking to a seikh, one that wears the dagger as well, and he was saying their objective is to reincarnate until they literally become part of god and they dont believe god is an entity, its just energy apparently. I would still double check this information

As Jesus Christ wasn't the founder of Christianity, so was Nanak Dev not the founder of Sikhism. In Sikh stories, there're several clues that Baba Nanak was a Muslim but, the middle verse of the Var 1:32 of Bhai Gurdas alone is enough to prove that he was a practicing Muslim who recited Quran, gave Azan (Ba'ang) and prayed five times a day on his Mussalah.

Sikhism branched out of Sufism. Reason Guru Nanak said that “ He is neither Muslim nor a Hindu” is because of the savagery of the invading Turks and their kings and yet claiming to be Muslims. Another point is that many Muslims became Sikhs when they too became disillusioned by the oppressive Sultans. King Jahangir mentions this fact in his biography. Sikhs mostly belong to the Jatt tribe of Punjab who are mostly Muslims in Pakistan part of the Punjab and share the same clan names with them. The Moghuls oppressed them, cooked alive their teacher, bricked the children of their last Guru into a wall alive. Hence their hatred for Muslims. Yet their Gurus entertained great friendships with many Sufi leaders. Mian Muhammad was invited to lay the first brick to the foundations of the Golden temple. Sufi leader Peer Buddhu Shah sacrificed himself and his disciples in defending the Sikhs in battle against the Moghuls. During the violence at the partition of Punjab Sikhs spared the Muslims of Maler Kotla because their ancestor had condemned the Fatwa from the Mullah who ordered the sons of the Guru to be bricked alive into a wall. To understand Sikhsim we have to look at our own failings as Muslims and recognise that the Kingship, Sultan era in our history was nothing but brutal and had little or nothing to do with true Islam.

Basically there is so much hate for Muslims which they call as “Turks” throughout in their scriptures ( not in GGS but secondary scriptures). I would recommend brother hijab to read their books like Dasam Granth, Bichitra Natak, Sri gur panth prakash, history of banda bahadur etc. They use maleccha derogatory term for Muslims in their scriptures.

Great to see Mohammed Hijab do a session on Sikhism although there are some terrible interpretations and he himself starts by saying that Sikhism is similar to Hinduism. It is not. Sikhism was established because Hindus were too obsessed with rituals and caste. Guru Nanak Dev Ji mocked this as he found it ridiculous. Indeed, as a child he mocked certain aspects much to the annoyance of his father who was into all the rituals etc. Both Islam and Sikhism are monotheistic religions. We all believe in ONE God who we are to worship, meditate upon, praise and be in awe of. Do not assume Sikhs do not believe in a hell and heaven. We do. The purpose of this life is to devote ourselves to God. We do this without thinking about the end result - heaven, hell, reincarnation. We serve God because that is what we are here for. What happens to us after this life we leave for him to decide. For Ahmed to say we believe God is the laptop. 100 PER CENT WRONG. Quite insulting actually. Also, the first speaker who is describing Sikhism is on the whole doing a good job. The speaker refers to "HE" when interpreting some of our scripture. He is right in doing so. God is a HE. It was wrong for him to say that God is without gender. No, God as referred to in all the scriptures is a He. Not sure why he had to say Sikhs see God as genderless - 100 per cent wrong. Unlike Mohammed and the Gurus who are just men - only God is infallible. Mohammed and the Gurus were not infallible. They are merely messengers. We NEVER worship the Gurus. Indeed, Guru Gobind Singh Ji said that if we were to do this we would go to hell. We respect the Gurus but we pray to God only. No, Sikhism is NOT a fusion of Hinduism and Islam. Guru Nanak was sickened by Hinduism's obsession with caste and rituals. He preached that what matters is our prayers to the one God and good deeds. Ahmad also referred to Guru Nanak as a Muslim. No, Guru Nanak was not a Muslim. He was born into a Hindu family. However. as Islam means submission to God then all of us believers are Muslims. So I submit to the will of God and am a Muslim according to this definition although I practise the Sikh faith, ie recite the holy scriptures etc. Ahmad does not know his stuff and as he himself says he needs to do his research. He is quite sloppy. After his research hopefully he will have a better idea. I have only got as far as 24.49 but felt compelled to write as I felt some aspects of Sikhism were being misdescribed. I will continue watching the remainder. Mohammed Hijab has referred at various times to the drops in the ocean. He is confused by the meaning. Sikhs often use the analogy of the ocean and its drops of water. The drop is totally part of the ocean, but has no comprehension of the ocean’s limits (if a water drop had any comprehension of anything). So, we are the drops in this world so to speak and have no idea regarding what God is at the end of the day as he is ineffable, he is on another plane. He is in heaven and he is close to us. He is always with us although we cannot see him. No, Sikhism is not pantheistic. At NO point do Sikhs worship or tolerate many gods. Sikhism is a monotheistic religion like Islam - one God. Nor do we believe that God and the universe are the same things. We can say all this comes from God but when I pray I pray to GOD, not to anything else.

Almost everyone refers to Baburids as Moguls. But it’s historically not accurate. Because, Babur was grandchild of Timour, who was Turk in Central Asia. He served to Mogul military service to gain power, then conquered Mawarannahr and Khorasan together. Timur was Muslim by the way. So my point is, Babur shouldn’t be referred as Moghul. He was a Turk who spoke Chagatai and from Central asia(present Uzbekistan, valley Ferghana).

I think you should stick to your koran book and Muhammad and not make assumptions about others if dont know jack about others.

Ahmad's knnowledge of Sikh History is weak - there are numerous books out there you can read including the standard history by Khushwant Singh - he has a multi-volume text as well as a shorter single volume text for a basic outline. Ahmad seems to lean heavily on Harjot Oberoi's book, "The Construction of Religious Boundaries: Culture, Identity, and Diversity in the Sikh Tradition".

This is discussion was interesting... but viewing Eastern faiths through an Abrahamic lense creates its own fallacies, we must remember that in punjab culturally sikh and muslim were almost indistinguishable, so the discussion on divorce was nonsensical. This is more a civil issue then a religious one.

What absolute nonsensical arguments. As a proud Sikh, I can honestly say, Sikhi has been grossly misrepresented by these speakers here. Most of the “problems” spoken about here are the same “problems” that are glaringly obvious in Islam also. How to know which religion is true? Employing the following simple criteria will help establish which religion is true and most likely to be from God: 1. The idea and nature of God should be simple and easily understandable to any sane human being, regardless of their level of education. Similarly, the practitioners of the religion should have a clear understanding of the core tenets of their faith, with no ambiguity or confusion. 2. This idea should be fully supported by the scriptures of the said religion. 3. The message of that religion and its religious book should be preserved without any human interpolation. 4. The religion mustn’t be tribal or ethnocentric; it should be accessible to everyone from anywhere in the world. Common sense dictates that if God wants humanity to follow a particular religion, it should be easily accessible to all. 5. The scripture must support the universality of its message. 6. The textual preservation of the religious texts should be verifiable by third-party sources. 7. The religion should be known to a large portion of humanity. 8. Its practitioners feel happy for others to join their faith and actively invite people to join or learn about their religion.

Many tried to describe God and talked about His incarnations Guru Nanak made it clear that God is One and He is Eternal He clarified this point. The Guru's were All in Union with God they didn't have any mediators like angels the revelation was direct from God. It is Sikhi not Sikhism...ism was added on by the British. Surprised you did not pick up on that fundamental point given how well educated you claim be.

Interesting point is that the sikh empire was majority massively Muslim, they lived quite happily so much so that a wahhabi inspired jihad from the central provinces failed to gain much traction. Many Muslim had high ranking positions in military and government.

Very wrong interpretation and ill informed info. Guru Nanak last name was "Bedi" which is last name for Hindu Khatri. Beard and all keeping hair was instituted by Guru Gobind Singh ji when he made Sikh as "Khalsa". Golden Temple has four doors which represent that people from all walks of life, from all around the world, and members of all four varnas are equally welcome in this place. This is the primary difference between your religion and Sikhism. Can anybody go to your supreme place of worship?? That explains everything.....

Incorrect. SGGS does not state that there are 8.4 million species. It says each super cycle of reincarnation is 8.4 million reincarnations long. Very poor interpretation of Sikhi and Gurbani.
