I totally agree with what you said. However, the Khawarij today is different from the past. All Khawarij today follow the path of Abdul wahhab. And the only scholars they look up to are the so called salafis: Ibn Taymiyyah Ibn Qayyim ibn Baaz Al abani and that is basically it.

Ahle Sunnah always had strong opinion for Muawiya until Pseudo-Salafis adopted him and tried to whitewash his wrongdoings, supported monarchy and mostly in the malice of Shias or against the greatness of Maula Ali(r.a).
