The actual story of what happened, as you can imagine, is much more brutal. Falling down the mountain, Marcus bit his tongue in half and swallowed it at one point. All of them broke multiple bones. One of his squad mates went blind at one point from being shot in the head and got separated from Marcus but continued to crawl 3 miles until the enemy finally found him. When Marcus made it to the village, the enemy tortured him all night before the villagers fought to protect him. There is a video of him talking about the experience if you want to listen to it. It's one of the most insane, life changing speeches I've ever heard. The man is made of something different. All of them are.

Cool thing about Marcus Latrell is that he was a Corpsman as well. Went through an advanced form of combat medicine, Special Operations Combat Medic (SOCM). So he knew exactly what he was doing when pulling out that shrapnel. Man knew how to save lives and take them. Such a badass.

When Marcus talks about the man and the village that helped him truly shows that there are good people in a sea of evil. Marcus has had a great friendship with the man that helped him. The beginning scenes that you were asking if it was real, it was. That was BUD’s class 234. I’ve watched that documentary several times because childhood friend of mine was in, and graduated with, that class. He recently retired from the teams after close to 20 years as a SEAL.

First time I watched this movie I perceived it as an epic war story. Thought it sucked when the seals died but that was about it. The second and third time I think I actually started to perceive it more realistically and i actually understood the weight of what had happened. I think the third time I almost cried, because as epic as it was it was also very tragic and sad. Rest it peace all the forces lost in operation red wings

Regarding the training, these are NOT poor people...every one in the US military volunteers to be there. Then, you have to volunteer for this kind of training; you can quit at any time...the only thing keeping you there is YOU. How badly do you want the job? Can you handle the abuse and still ask for more?

You need to listen to Marcus Littrels speaking about what really happened. He is a motivational speaker and there are many videos of him telling the story. It is incredible and so much more happened in the real fight than the movie. I was in Helmand in 2009 Task force Leatherneck. The worst part was our comms in those mountains your are left stranded at times. This is what happened here. I was also MSG in Baghdad 2010 that was a 5* resort compared Korengal

He was shot in the right calf. He was shot in both his legs, he was shot in the groin, two shots in the stomache, two shots in the throat, three shots in his head. I was in Afghanistan during that time. I didn't know Lt. Murphy. When I saw this movie and saw the pictures of the real soldiers When they showed Lt. Murphy, the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. As I said. I didn't know him, but I worked in the fuel depot in Bagram, then Kabul, and Gardez. While in Kabul Lt. Murphy would come through and get fuel from me. So when I saw his picture I recognised him as the guy that would sign for the fuel. I was in complete shock becuase until I saw this movie, I never knew anything had happened to him.

When you said the old man was thanking them for letting him go he actually was saying “hear this, your deaths will be tonight”

This is an incredible story and the book was even better. One of my favorite stories on the making of this movie was when Marcus Luttrell was in a room full of movie executives and he told them that if they did anything to disrespect his fallen team members, he would kill each one of them.

I saw this twice in theaters when it first came out, and it was pretty painful to watch. Especially them falling down the mountain. So visceral and really painful. Ellie's reaction brings me back to experiencing this for the first time. Definitely the roughest war movie I've seen in terms of how purely brutal and unrelenting it is.

There's always plenty of 'meat & potatoes' in the extras, like the part when Mathew Axelson's family talked to the director, Peter Berg, about their son's autopsy report. In spite of all the wounds Axe took, INCLUDING A HEAD SHOT FROM AN AK, he didn't give up until he had absolutely no life in his body. According to the director, Axe's father told him, "That's the kind of man my son was."

The Seal that was the one having to recite the Creed was from Boulder City Nv that’s a little city 5 minutes away from me and 10-15 minutes away from Las Vegas. He went down in the first rescue helicopter.

Which makes all these men more remarkable in my opinion is that they volunteered. They choose to bring the fight. He broke his back when fell down the mountain and crawled to safety thanks to local village man who he has became friends with. I'm guessing in that situation best thing is try and use the dirt to clot the wound. Better to treat infection than bleeding out. The local village guy deserves full citizenship and safe passage to America for his family in my opinion. Another true Hero who sacrificed his well being for the safety of others. Never sleep without a gun next to me.

Highly recommend you watch the speech Marcus did telling his story, it’s like 30 minutes on KZfaq. Even if it’s not for a video it’s still a moving watch and would highly recommend

In the movie Matthew Axelson claims that Shah killed 20 Marines in the week before Operation Red Wings, IRL only 2 Marines died in the week before. The attempted beheading scene never hapend There were never more than 20-40 Taliban involved in that last firefight.

You should KZfaq Marcus Luttrell's 911 call. Several punks snuck onto his property in Texas and shot his dog, one night. The dog was named for his comrades that died on that mountain and was an animal meant to help with his PTSD. He chased the punks for miles until the police caught up with them. At one point the 911 operator asks him to stop chasing them because she doesn't want him to hurt himself. He responds with, "Ma'am, i'm a Navy Seal and have been for 10 years. I'm not worried about hurting myself." Marcus is the epitome of a badass.

I've met Marcus at a book signing in 2010. Got a signed copy of Lone Survivor and a chance to shake his hand and thank him. I've also contacted Daniel Murphy, the father of Michael Murphy (via Facebook) who received the Medal of Honor for his gallant actions portrayed here. Most of what you see in this film is an accurate representation of what occurred on June 28, 2005 but is condensed so it could fit in a 2 hour film. In actuality, the fight and the aftermath during which Luttrell essentially crawled 5 miles took much longer. I HIGHLY recommend reading the book as it is among the finest books I've ever laid eyes upon and allows for more detail. All 4 of these SEALs and the QRF team dispatched to rescue them deserve there story to be known. As Mike Murphy's dad told me, "Thank you for your words of condolences and for remembering my buddy boy".

axe's last stand was even more badass than what the movie showed. Apparantly he he had half his face blow off and was blinded, but he crawled his self away and was discoveded slumped against a tree. Along his path were several dead enemy; he used nothing but his hearing to determine where the enemy were and killed them

Even though it personally didn’t happen to me, I know our military will fight till the end for their brothers next to them and they fight so people like myself don’t have to. I know some veterans don’t like it, don’t get me wrong I understand why because my father is a veteran and he hates being reminded. But I would like to say from the bottom of my heart thank you for your service thank you for watching our backs as well as your own. I will always support the men and women of the military. Good movie, Hollywood didn't exactly stick to the script of making it super accurate to what happened, but the portion on what Michael Murphy did is very accurate. The phone call in particular, even down to the detail of him saying thank you at the end was very accurate. For this action he was posthumously awarded the medal of honor, the first medal of honor given in the war in Afghanistan.

The Apache Helicopters were called to another group of soldiers who were in contact with the enemy. At the moment, they were the higher priority because the headquarters didn't know the 4 were in contact on their own.

The middle eastern guy that helped him is still friends with him in real life. Marcus even flew him to America to visit.

A vast majority of the Pashtun tribes in the mountains of Afghanistan just want to be left alone and live in peace. They don't ask for help from insurgency groups or the Americans; they keep to themselves, take care of their own, and are of no threat to anyone. Their moral code of Pashtunwali is something everybody could take a page from. Its 3 main tenets are: hospitality (extends to anyone regardless of race, gender, ethnic origin, etc. (anybody)), asylum (extends to anyone as protection from their enemies), and justice/revenge (they assist in seeking justice/revenge from the wrongdoer). Other tenets that are encompassed by the code are: bravery, respect/pride, loyalty, kindness, faith, chivalry, honor, protecting female honor, protection of country, arbitration, etc.). This is why you see them take in Luttrell, aid him, feed him, clean him up, let him rest, go find the American base, and fight to protect him until the other Americans show up.

You'd be surprised what the human body is capable of doing while you're fighting for your life and the adrenaline is pumping like mad. I bet there's been cases when the human body is in the final process of dying, and the person just keeps on going until he/she just drops, and that's from pure adrenaline. What I think makes this movie so realistic and great, is that they don't just drop dead from a shot in an non-vital area, they just get shot everywhere and says: ''fuck that burns''. In other movies you see guys drop dead from a bullet in the shoulder... I think there's several interviews with Marcus Lutrell, where he reveal how many times he actually got shot, and where he got shot.

15:40 in this part of the Marcus was carrying his best friend and as he turned a bullet hit his friends head and the “dead” weight made him lose his balance and fall. As he fell he face planted into a rock and broke his nose and bit half of his tongue off. He made himself vomit and put it in his mouth and hit down on it to not lose it again. Soldiers are able to selflessly lay down their own lives because we care about our brothers lives more than our own.

Marcus received a Labrador puppy to help him recover from his wounds he loved the dog like it was his own daughter named it daisy but some arseholes killed it.

The best part about this movie, the real Marcus Luttrell was in the movie and was in the heli when it was shot down. I believe it was his way of dying with his brothers on that mountain.

Luttrell actually broke his back and a number of other bones in those falls. He was lucky he never ended up a paraplegic. When he was found he couldn’t move. From that point the story is largely fictitious apart from the villagers contacting the Americans and luttrell was then picked up by a rescue mission.

Marcus actually broke twp vertebra in his lower back when he fell down the mountain the final time. He was paralyzed from the waist down. So he could only dragg himself around on the ground until he found that pool of water that Muhammed Gulebe found him in.

The village people are not terrorists. It is known that when you fight terrorists in their element, you can't tell who is a terrorist and who is a civilian. That is partly why they hold up in those locations. The villagers know that he is a US soldier so he is friendly to them, they just need to prove that they are on his side because they look like the terrorists.

I can tell you falling on a mount at any height sucks. Last time I fell I got my leg all cut up and the person who caused me to fall snapped their leg trying to abscond.

In the briefing they warned of rattlesnakes and poison oak, neither of which occur in Afghanistan. They do however occur in the Sangre de Christo Mountains in New Mexico where this was shot. The warnings were no doubt part of the daily safety briefings during shooting and somehow got into the movie.

Packing it with dirt could temporarily slow bleeding down, even thought it could become infected later on it can be treated with antibiotics.

I wouldn’t say what Marcus and his team did was all for belief. They were simply fighting for each other. You protect your buddies just as hard as your buddies would for you. That, or you at least die together never without a fight. Mike climbed to make that call because he loved Marcus, Axel, and Danny. In the words of a MoH recipient, “Combat strangely teaches you about love. When you’re willing to put yourself in front of that bullet for your Buddy, that’s love.”

I think the ending is the best bit. they show the actual guys and also the guy who saved his life due to his following the ancient code of Pashtunwali

The rural Afghans have a code of conduct. When they help you they will fight for you. It’s strange but it saved Marcus.
