TheKaffeeKlatsch I've already walked in those shoes, because I've already served. What you are too blind to see is that Marcus is getting all the attention over his buddies and those that died. You have to remember that Marcus isn't the hero. Lt Murphy is the real hero in this. He sacrificed his life for his team. Without Lt Murphy, they would all be dead, because nobody in the rear knew what was going on or where exactly they were at. You wouldn't know this because you've never lived life in combat arms jobs. And if you had any two cents in your brain, you would see that Marcus himself compromised the mission by convincing them to let those Taliban herders go. Sorry, but just because they are goat herders doesn't mean they weren't Taliban. Why else would you run back to tell? All they really had to do was tie them up, take the shot (if possible), zip-tie their knees and ankles (to slow them down from reaching the Taliban) then escape and evade. They would have completed their mission wihile avoiding un-needed causalities. Marcus' conscience would have remained intact and they would have been back in the rear drinking cold beers and BBQ'n. Special Operations guys are supposed to be smart, creative, etc. This was some crap I would expect from a line unit. You are suppose to operate in this order: Mission, Men, Me. Marcus operated as: Me, Men, Mission.

Steven Schmidt I would also recommend checking out a map of Sawtalo Sar, and seeing just how far 7 miles is from where they were ambushed. About 6 miles farther than the village. Luttrell told a sea story for personal fame and profit, at the expense of the man that saved his life, American soldiers and Vets, and Americans in general. No surprise he lived with Rick Perry, and shilled for both he and Donald Trump. He only answers questions through his lawyer. He is everything that is what not to like about America.

Yeah. If you read the book and other writing on this event, the general consensus is that Marcus was and is pretty torn about the decision to let the guys go. He said in the the book that he believes if they killed those goat herders, his three best friends would be alive today. However, he felt had to follow the rules of engagement. In some people's mind, saving three American lives is the "right thing to do" where as others believe that sparing "innocent civilians" (those guys were clearly taliban supporters and wanted to kill Americans) is more important.

Yea but to Marcus’s credit he seemed like he didn’t wanna hurt the interviewer’s feelings half way into his answer. But he defended himself strongly. What I’m curious about is why Marcus has so much regret over the decision to let the goat herders go when Gulab stated that the entire Taliban heard the helicopter landing and that they started tracking the SEALs immediately after. That would have made the goat herders running into them more or less irrelevant.

I served in Afghanistan in 2004 and when Marcus’ book came out I knew I wanted to read it. At that time there weren’t a lot of military history books about our generation of war. Up to that point it was Black Hawk Down and In The Company of Heroes. So this book was special to me because I had been there and left a big piece of me. Even all these years later it still bothers me. I lost 14 men I call brother over there. I always ask why did I make it home. Why couldn’t I have kept them safe and brought them home to their families. Now since being home I hate large crowds and the movie was coming out so my wife and I went to a theater on a Monday for the first 1100 am showing. It actually turned out to be me, my wife, and two Vietnam Vets. I was really tense throughout the movie my wife had to keep telling me to take some deep breaths and calm down. And when the pictures of those who fell I openly weepy in that theater. One of the Vietnam Vets walked up and put his arm around me and we stood there for a bit and then walked away. So thank you to Marcus and Peter, as well as the actors who played these American heroes. Thank you for bringing light to what we ALL did in Iraq and Afghanistan. 🇺🇸

This is a great conversation. Marcus and his matter of fact approach is inspirational, "Stay out of our way, and we'll stay out of yours!" All said after making an emotional response but still has clarity of mind after all his been through, how can anyone not admire such strength. I would love to see a talk on Marcus with photos that have meaning and him explaining, l just think that would make for good watching. Cheers.

She asks him if he regrets his decision not to kill the aphgans and he says he regrets nothing about the entire ordeal. In the book though he says numerous times that he regrets not killing them. He says he regrets it because if they had killed them, that his team would still be alive. I think Marcus is a warrior. He is also an emotional wreck. You can see it in his posture and how he talks about what happened. Though still alive, he truly gave his life and part of his sanity to this country and I thank him for that.

+chuckv5150 He's gone back and forth on how he feels about that, and even in this video you can say he's conflicted because he DOESN'T KNOW. Of course part of him wishes they had snuffed them and gone on to finish their mission with all those SEALS home safe and sound... On the other hand, showing mercy and compassion is what will make us the good guys, right? As he says, it's a conundrum that will never be answered. It's a tragedy, what we go through, sometimes.

Luttrell is a liar. The insurgents already knew they were in the area. They heard the Chinook, they likely even found the fast rope, they most likely saw them moving around in the open during the day, and they certainly saw their boot tracks. Luttrell is a warrior, and he is an emotional wreck, but that isn't an excuse for abandoning the man the saved his life because his embellishment and lies about what happened would get exposed.

@Gaven Miller that is a valid assessment, had the Afgan herders been dispatched, the likelihood of additional casualties and KIAs' may have been reduced or nullified. Unfortunately Rule 47 of the 1949 Genivia Convention strictly forbids the killing of non-combatants. There are soldiers and contractors who have been charged, court martialed and or convicted with murder for killing civilians under the assumption of a posed threat by way of civilains providing intelligence of military activity to the enemy. Delicate situation, how does one choose and how can one stipulate unequivocally that the goat herders posed as an eventual threat to the success of the operation? He definitely will wrestle with these questions as to why they "voted" on that decision to let the herders go and the lieutenant did not make a command decision. I was not there, however I have been in situations where remembering the minute to minute accounts and details of an occurrence are difficult to recall with definitive accuracy. He made it back and others did not, no amount of finger pointing will bring the downed participants back from the dead. We learn from the mistakes, make adjustments and deploy moving forward.

IMHO I don't think he realized that people would take it this far. As he said, no one asks him about hunting, shooting or sports. Sounds like some regret there, but yes, he did agree to make a book and movie. Double edged sword no doubt. I work with a Nam vet and one time he started talking about what he saw, a 72 year old man started to break down. I told him not to worry about it, no need to talk about it. Let's just get our work done today. It's why I don't ask any Vet what they endured, saw or did. But that's just me.

Wait wait, did Tina Brown just say at 13:42 that the right thing to do was KILLING INNOCENT CIVILIANS? Rules of engagement, and basic ethics would disagree with you Tina. There's a word for people who target civilians in a war zone - war criminal. These guys sacrificed their lives to uphold the law and what morality exists in a warzone. How dare she disrespect their memory by suggesting that they didn't do the right thing and died for nothing.

Remy Kim Saying that not killing the civilians was the right thing to do isn't Monday night Quarterbacking, it's just making a clearly moral statement. There are no real vagaries here. If they'd killed the civilians they would have breached the rules of war. Talking about tying them up, or taking them with them etc. - That's Monday night quarterbacking.

As a Vietnam Navy Veteran, I have the greatest respect for the SEALS and all service members who put their lives on the line for duty. Civilians cannot understand the level of commitment, training, skill, dedication and the special bond between brothers in arms who give their lives for each other and for a civilian population to live free. I didn't serve in combat, I was a Navy Corps-wave, but I did witness the deep spiritual scars left behind due to combat. These men put their bodies, minds and spirits to service. Much of the cost isn't evident until they come home and try to integrate in society. Look on any street in America, if you see a homeless guy in fatigues there is a great chance that he was in service. The SEALS are the elite and most highly trained and dedicated. It is evident that Marcus Luttrell earned his membership in this group. You can see the price paid in his body, his face and the dignity when speaking about getting the job done. His book is a great tribute to the men he served with. As a civilian, I owe these men respect, understanding, honor and the deepest compassion.

Sybil Galer "Civilians cannot understand the level of commitment, training, skill, dedication" and brainwashing that all service members have. So much that they will invade another country and kill innocent people because they are ordered to by the U.S government. DAYUM. To this day, there are still people (see GOP voters, not ALL of them thou) that think the Iraq War was beneficial for Iraq and the Middle East. AND ALL YOU PUPPET SERVICE MEMBERS DO IS SAY "We were put in a situation, and we did what we had to do" Fucking murderers. If you really had some balls and a conscience (see judgement that assists in distinguishing right from wrong) you would tell your government "We will not go to (Insert name of the country you have invaded here; Iraq, Vietnam, Korea, Afganistan, bombings in Lybia, Pakistan, just to name a few) and kill their people" But since I am talking to a Vietnam Navy Vet, you probably are no more intelligent than a war-mongering psycopath.

Wambli Padilla Actually Wambii my experience in Vietnam has made me a Quaker pacifist. I protested the Vietnam War, the Gulf War and the Iraq, Afghan War. I agree that the US rush to war is a disgrace. The US domination of foreign countries is egregious. The politicians and civil leadership hold US lives and foreign lives in contempt. The interference in foreign sovereignty has toppled governments and led to the destabilization of countries from South America to the Middle East. It is ultimately responsible for the rise in hatred for America. This wanton imperialism should be resisted by all who value Peace. However, my hatred of war does not compromise my appreciation and love for the men and women who serve with honor.

Sybil Galer I understand and share your point of view. But I do not understand "However, my hatred of war does not compromise my appreciation and love for the men and women who serve with honor" These soldiers are human beings, and they deserve our love as any other human being. I agree with you. But as service men and women they are invading other countries and killing people because they are ordered to. They do not question or protest it. From this point of view, they are harming the world.
