NEW ANNOUNCEMENT
The JUMPER DIGITAL MULTIMEDIA JUMPS RESOURCE
LINK: pubsecure.lucidpress.com/THE_...
As John mentions in the video he has produced an on-line digital offeing which can be downloaded from the web, initially viewed as a web document or - should you wish - downlaoded as a PDF, where the many links to videos and podcasts will still work.
John produced The JUMPER in response to a number of requests to explain his coaching philosophy and also due to some of the limitations with videos i.e. certain subject matter comes across better in the old fashion written way (with up to date video support of course!).
Subjects covered in The Jumper include,
How John puts his training together, how you can reduce fouls, the optimum triple jump phase ratios and videos featuring top jumps coach Jeremy Fischer. There is also as they say, much, much more.
Let John know what you think about The Jumper
Checkout this link if you are looking for the same mats I use (it will go to Amazon)

ABOUT THIS VIDEO
In this video coach John Shepherd (www.johnshepherdfitness.com/blog) talks through and showcases how he uses mat drills to teach and develop the long jump take-off. For this video the mats are placed on the 3rd last and final step (although other permutations are possible - see a future video).
The take-off is crucial for the long jump and it needs to be set up on the preceding steps - otherwise it's too late.

Hi Coach. Thanks for this. Where can I get some mats to use for these exercises? Any suggestions for what I'm looking for? I assume that they are fairly heavy and firm.

Hello Coach Shepard; I am a high school sophomore who also does football and basketball (which are fall and winter sports), so I only run during the outdoor season. I am going into my 2nd year of ever doing track and field, so I want to know how much I can improve on my 100m and Long Jump this year? My 100m PR last year was 12.4 and my LJ PR was 18 ft 8 in. I will also note that I practiced with the 100m relay team more than I did on the open 100, so I was not very comfortable running out of blocks (my relay splits were between 11.5 and 11.7). Thanks!

Thanks for another great video! I had some questions about the triple jump take off. Which style do you see as more effective? I normally go double off the board but feel like I prepare for it too much which leads to me slowing down and not fully running off the board. And I’ve tried single arm the take off is good but I feel as if there’s not enough power throughout the phases. I think the other one I’ve heard tour mention in another video being the 1/4 push or something of the sorts I was wondering how much better you think that is and good ways to practice it or athletes to look at.
@Johnshepherdtrackcoach
@Johnshepherdtrackcoach 4 жыл бұрын
I have been thinking in this very subject ... I think if you can do a double arm shift as quick as CT then you will get the benefits - it's done on one step ... many jumpers have difficulty drawing the arms back fast at speed (it's key not to take them back too far) ... it's more of s short shift. I think that the quarter push method can also be good and does solve the slowing down issue ... take a look at Will Clare. The technique results in a bit of a single arm swing for the hop, Claye then goes double double. I may produce a video on this. Cheers

Do you notice better results from using a lot of principles in the training week, versus the ''traditional'' periodization phases?
@Johnshepherdtrackcoach
@Johnshepherdtrackcoach 4 жыл бұрын
Yes... so I’ll mix intensities over a week and undulate phasing - hence my use of undulating periodisation. So, I don’t have a don’t have a distinct build up or transition phase ... it’s a mix of speed, power, technique and plyos all year round. I do know how to manipulate intensities however within this framework to bring about peaks and re-build phases. So, we are now working more intensely due to the impending indoor season. The traditional approach has been shown to inferior in terms of producing results compared to undulating periodisation and block periodisation. How that helps. Thanks and usual for the interest.

What should the spacing/measurement be between the matts?
@Johnshepherdtrackcoach
@Johnshepherdtrackcoach 3 ай бұрын
Covering board and 4.50 or so back (centrally placed - so front of mat is closer depending on mat size. Ours are 1mx1m). Hope that helps

Hi John, I’ve been on the lookout for mats like this. Are they like 1/2” or thicker? Also, I’m curious how they wear with athletes using spikes on them. Do they need to be a certain density? Thanks for everything!
@Johnshepherdtrackcoach
@Johnshepherdtrackcoach 4 жыл бұрын
Rebecca Delnigro hi, they're standard gym floor mats and seem hard wearing. They are made from a hard but spongy rubber - so they can aid lift to a degree. They are the jig-saw type and fit together to make larger areas. Yes, they are about the height you mention. Hope this helps.

John Shepherd track & field coach - author & editor Thank you! I will be on the lookout. The only mats I’ve seen that would be able to withstand the wear and tear of spikes are the mats used in horse stalls and they are extremely heavy. And I’ve only seen them in a size that would be too large to be practical. Perhaps I will take a chance on some of the more common standard gym mats.

John Shepherd track & field coach - author & editor Do your athletes wear spikes when they use the mats?
@Johnshepherdtrackcoach
@Johnshepherdtrackcoach 4 жыл бұрын
Rebecca Delnigro I don't think the mats we use are that expensive and they are light. They belong to the facility. We will use them on average once a week 6-10 athletes. I guess volume would make a difference. And yes they wear spikes. Another option would be old pieces of track (perhaps glued and stacked together). I had a quick web search - these products seem to be the ones www.ebay.co.uk/itm/INTERLOCKING-JIGSAW-FLOOR-EVA-FOAM-MATS-TILES-PLAYGROUND-GYM-YOGA-EXERCISE-PLAY/253189763124?hash=item3af3493034:m:ms4V7AFmJBWVPxFT3uc7Xcg&var=552285747507

It’s hard to tell the mat spacing in your explanation. What is a good rule of thumb for doing this with a group of jumpers at the high school level with varying abilities? Is that about 2-3 meters between mats?
@Johnshepherdtrackcoach
@Johnshepherdtrackcoach 4 жыл бұрын
Okay, try centring the first mat in the middle of the board, then the third one's centre should be circa 4.90-5.20m. Do experiment the spacing needs to promote the speed through the last strides, the Jumper should not push from the third ... the contact is flat footed. Next time I'm at the track I will try to get some more precise measurements. Note this spacing is for long run-ups, mats would need to be a little closer for shorter run-ups and to manipulate speed if desired. Hope this helps, good luck,
