Wyoming Gun Company’s Geoff Montgomery and Jeremy Scribner are on location at Platte River Rod and Gun Club for the finale of the Precision Hunting Rifle Build Series. We picked the Platte River Rod and Gun Club because these guys run an awesome facility with a large variety of targets from 100-1200 yards on their long range. They also have separate ranges designed for handguns and pistol caliber carbines as well. Today we are utilizing their long range, the steel targets on this range are placed at various distances and elevations in a very realistic hunting environment. We are field testing a Wyoming Gun Company custom 6.5 PRC built on a fully accurized Remington action with a double sleeved bolt, Badger Ordnance M-16 style extractor and dual ejectors, Proof Research Carbon Fiber 24-inch Barrel, and Jewell Trigger. This barreled action is glass bedded in a McMillan A3 Tactical Stock. A couple additions to this rifle are the Leupold VX-6 HD 4-24 X 52 optic, Harris Bi-pod and a TBAC Ultra 7 CB silencer. This rifle had approximately 45 rounds through it before this video, 20 rounds for the break in process as recommended by Proof Research, and 25 rounds after that. During the initial sight in process, we were able to achieve 1/4” five shot groups at Wyoming Gun Company’s Indoor 100-yard range. After the sight in process a chronograph was used to verify velocity, this information is needed create a ballistic data chart for this rifle. We are using factory Hornady Precision Hunter 143 grain ELDX ammunition in this rifle during this entire process. Geoff has built many precision rifles as a Professional Gunsmith and it is a testament to the quality of work being done when you can take a custom rifle that he has built out to the range and it will perform as well as, or better than expected, even when using factory ammunition. After completing the initial break in, and 100-yard sight in process at Wyoming Gun Company’s indoor facility we wanted to see how this precision rifle would perform at six hundred, and one thousand yards in an outdoor setting. We were fortunate to be able to get out to Platte River Rod and Gun Club on a calm morning to test this rifle in the field. There were some minor adjustments that needed to be made from the calculated ballistics, to account for the environmental conditions at the 600-yard target. This rifle shot three, 3-shot groups at the elk silhouette, all three groups were approximately 3” or just below ½ MOA, the final group ended up near the center of the intended target after fine tuning the elevation on the optic according to the ballistic data chart. After completing a successful group at 600 yards, we wanted to take advantage of the ideal conditions on this beautiful day in November and finish up the series on this particular custom build by testing this rifle’s performance out to one thousand yards. After a few small adjustments to the optic, we were able to achieve a 4-shot group measuring 10”, just under 1 MOA on the Buffalo silhouette 1000-yard target. Jeremy was the individual shooting the rifle in this video, this was the first time he had successfully shot at distances beyond 550 yards. This proves that even an individual who is not experienced in long range precision, using good quality factory ammunition, can attain a high level of success with a precision rifle that is built at Wyoming Gun Company by Professional Gunsmith, Geoff Montgomery.
