Welcome back Rex, I have for a long time had a passion for shooting, but you're videos have sparked my interest in percision shooting. Unfortunately, around here (NC) places to shoot long range are not easy to find. I am blessed with 400yard range in my back yard and have been working on using it to tighten my groups in hopes to one day stretch out more. Thanks again for all the info, insight, wisdom and hard work I know you put into the production of this series. Ervin Kimrey

Surefire makes very good stuff. You can thread your own barrel if you know what’s going on with your lathe. Make sure both ends are aligned with the axis of the bore and not just the outside diameter. Alignment needs to be near perfect.

Another point to add is a suppressor will reduce recoil which I believe aids accuracy but reducing the importance of recoil affected accuracy. Thanks for the great series!

I'll give you guys the equations I use very soon. Yeah, I do paper tables for this as well. Coriolis accounts for only a tiny tiny part of our hold off. Unless you are shooting at very small targets at extreeme ranges, it won't trip you up too bad. Stay tuned. Coriolis is right arround the corner.

In Norway its generally not advised to keep your suppressor attached to the rifle all the time. Both our gunsmiths and suppressor manufacturers suggest removing the suppressor then the rifle is not in use, due to ammonia that forms inside the suppressor which can greatly accelerate corrosion in the barrel. My gunsmith says he has replaced several barrels due to this. Lot of powder deposits build up in the suppressor, if you hold the gun muzzle up it could easily loosen and go inside the barrel and action. I always remove my suppressor after use. It wouldn't fit in my drag bag if I didn't, but still... I would suggest removing the suppressor every time.

So, I'm a little late to the party on this one, but wow. Thanks so very much for putting this out there! I've been watching your whole series on long range shooting and I'm consistently blown away by the quality of your information and how well you present it. Thanks again very much. My question, I'm interested in a suppressor for a Savage 10BA Stealth in 6.5 Creedmoor. Thunder Beast Arms make a 9" titanium suppressor in both 30 caliber as well as 6.5 creedmoor specific. While I'm tempted to go for the caliber specific model, I feel like it's a large investment to limit myself to just using it on one rifle. I thought the 30 caliber might be more versatile considering it'll work with anything from 223 up to 300 win mag. Thoughts? How much performance am I really sacrificing on my 6.5 creedmoor if I use a 30 caliber can? P.S. - On a side note, have you ever done any one-on-one training or offered any classes before? I'd be very interested if you do.

Do you recommend a different cleaning regimen for use with suppressors? They seem to foul a lot more quickly. Should I just leave it alone until accuracy declines?

The covers that go over suppressors are to eliminate or reduce the heat waves that would come off of them if they didn't have a cover. If there is no cover you would see mirage in your scope which could affect accuracy.

If the effective range is determined by the distance at which the projectile becomes subsonic, then if the Bullet leaves the bore subsonic, isn't the effective range decreased?
@TiborasaurusRex
@TiborasaurusRex 10 жыл бұрын
Great question, sir. The short answer is 'not necessarily'. Dynamic destabilization commonly occurs when the following criteria are met: 1) When the bullet passes through the transonic region (Mach 0.8 - 1.2) AND is coming belly down through that region due to a lack of tractability at long ranges. It’s the combination of both of these (passing through the transonic barrier AND doing it while not pointed strright on with its flight path) that causes problems and limits your max effective range. Low supersonic or transonic velocity? The transonic zone becomes less of a problem the lower the yaw angle is. With a lower supersonic muzzle velocity bullet, the transonic zone is penetrated while the bullet is still very close to point-on...thus dynamic destabilization probably won't occur. The bullet will penetrate the zone straight-on and will then travel uninhibited by such effects through its entire flight. Subsonic? If you start off subsonic, you avoid the transonic zone all together and thus your max effective range is only limited by your accuracy and remaining energy criteria...although your bullet drop at long ranges will be extreme. Does this sort of make sense?

plus if your using one...keep it tight..so everynow and then I reach up and make sure it's tight...the cover keeps you from frying your hand...it gets hotter than the filling on a nuked hot pocket...and will give you a severe burn if you reach up ungloved and touch it...believe me...you will only do this once.

Rex what is your thoughts on a breakdown rifle for our application? I have a Nemesis Vanquish and it would be cheaper for me to buy a .338 barrel.
@SavageShooter93
@SavageShooter93 9 жыл бұрын
I know he mentioned this is the brake pull of vid but some brakes installed on rifles that shoot tame cartridges like a .223 can turn a pretty quiet gun (compared to something like a .338) , that should be a pussycat for signature and blast into an obnoxious concussion and blast machine. Perfect example Is my Bushmaster 16" upper its got a pinned and welded (thanks Clinton) Mini Y Comp on it, Its a Cylindrical muzzle brake with 3 very large oblong shaped holes that are roughly 7/16" across and 5/8" long on each side at roughly a 40 degree rearward angle and 2 roughly 1/4" inch holes on the top that are angled rearward slightly , That gun is actually unpleasant to shoot for long periods. Just because of the face full of blast and concussion. Ive actually got headaches after shooting a few hundred rounds running drills with that gun. The recoil reduction and muzzle rise reduction are fantastic, the gun basically doesnt move, but its hardly worth it. Not only is the signature as far as noise and blast far worse than any other comp Ive ever seen or heard on an AR-15, even with no downward facing ports the amount of debris that gets kicked up while shooting prone is pretty bad as well, Its bad in the wet and mud of Western Washington But in the Summer in Eastern Washington the amount of dust that gets kicked up will completely envelop you if you shoot prone. And simply putting a mat down wont work, I even tried a second full size shooting mat sideways and a little behind the muzzle and it was still a massive dust signature. I do have another comp with almost the same design as the Mini Y comp on my 18" heavy barreled Precision AR-15 or my version of an "SPR" and even though it also has 3 rearward facing holes and 2 on top exactly like the Mini Y comp, the diameter is much smaller roughly 1/4" wide and 3/8" long on the sides and 3/16" on the top and it behaves completely different, it still reduces recoil and muzzle flip extremely well, Ive put it on my other 16" Carbine that is an ultralight build, And It performs fantastically, Maybe not quite as well as the Mini Y Comp but Its hard to tell, My ultralight is over a pound lighter than the Bushmaster, and that weight difference may have more to do with the change in perceived recoil, than the performance difference in the brakes So not only does the brake with the smaller holes perform just as well, it does it without the massive increase in blast and concussive force it and has a reasonable prone signature that can be mitigated pretty well with a fairly small mat. If course since its a brake it does increase blast at the shooter and at the sides, But it sounds like an Ar-15 and feels like one while shooting it. My Bushmaster with that Mini Y Comp does not. So even though you cant really judge recoil reduction and muzzle flip reduction performance by the looks, You can get an idea of which comps and brakes with produce an incredible blast and If a comp with big holes can make even an AR-15 unpleasant to shoot for long periods imagine what a design like that on a .338 Lapua Magnum would do for just a few rounds. So be picky about your designs, do some research, look at reviews and vids if you can before you buy a brake, Those things can get expensive especially when talking about suppressor ready ones. I want to point out that im not recoil or blast sensitive, Ive shot all sorts of guns in all sorts of calibers and the only one that I really felt was an unacceptable amount of recoil and blast was a dangerous game load in a very light single shot rifle, I think it was a .470 Nitro but I cant be sure it was a long time ago, and I only fired it once and had no desire to do it again. The other biggest caliber I have fired was a Barrett 99 chambered in .416 Barrett, while certainly not a gun I want to put 50 rounds through in a day, that gun wasnt producing obnoxious recoil or blast for what it was.

Hey Rex, the machinist who did my barrel cut down said that the 11° crown is pointless and has no bearing on accuracy. The gun came with an 11° crown (it had no threading). He cut mine at 90° and I asked (and we initially agreed) for the 11°. Will this hurt the accuracy? Should I go get it re-crowned? By the way, I don't shoot any boat tail bullets, only flat base.
@jacktraven9930
@jacktraven9930 4 жыл бұрын
Like Rex stated in the video, the crowns effect on accuracy is a question of uniformity rather than the degree of the crown. 11 degree, 90 degree, doesn't really matter for accuracy, heck some of the old school M40 sniper rifles had 45 degree crowns. You can definitely make the argument that using flat based projectiles will have more of an affect on accuracy when using a 90 degree crown, but without knowing what you are shooting and how it was manufactured I can't accurately comment on it. The degree is more important for mitigating muzzle erosion, as the gasses are escaping at a more gradual angle. This places more support on the edges of the rifling where as a 90 degree crown would leave the teeth of the rifling directly exposed to a sheer point at the end of the muzzle, so escaping gasses would cut through those fine teeth of the rifling much faster than if you had, say an 11 degree crown where you broke the edge of the rifling at 60 degrees. That would give you a lot more support around the rifling, as well as a compound angle to disperse gasses even more gradually. And there's also the fact that the recessed muzzle is protected by the outside of the barrel by the 11 degree crown, but if you're getting it threaded then it sounds like that probably won't be an issue. So I guess long story short he isn't entirely wrong, as long as the machining is done concentric to the bore then it shouldn't matter what degree the crown is. However to call it pointless is very irresponsible, as you gain longevity by using an acute crown (11 degree is the industry standard).
