Just to prove to my crew that vacuum sealing preserves crackers and cookies, I opened a few jar that I vacuum sealed in 2014-2016. The Oreos were as crunchy as the day I sealed them and the crackers and cereal tasted perfect. So they were approx 6-8 years sealed.

Happy to report that my saltines serviced five (5) years! Opened them up and they was fresh and crispy as when I bought them. I would suggest smaller jar unless you can eat them right away. Next they were getting the stale taste. But, felt very proud about the storage. Love you ideas, Heidi. Did NOT disappoint!

We mostly vac bag our cereals, leaving the cereal in its original bag, but with a tiny hole punched in using a bulletin board push pin, putting the factory bag into the larger factory made (or roll style cut to length) vac bag and cut out the front of the cereal box, placing that in with the cereal bag so we can instantly tell what type of cereal is in the bag & when dated. We don't vac pack any cereal with nuts of any kind or dried fruits (raisins, blueberries, strawberries, etc) because the oils in the nuts probably go rancid even in a vacuum & similar for the dried fruits.

I vacuum seal nuts of all kinds, I am not afraid of the fats. Vacuum sealing high fat foods prevents rancidity. I have been doing this for quite a number of years now: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d7xdlqyU0tPMlGg.html Remember that you can buy nuts vacuum sealed into jars and cans from the store. Plantars used to use that as a main selling feature

On potato flakes stuffing mix rice a Roni etc. I vacuum seal them with an 02 packet. I make sure it’s sealed in the bag as the same size as the box. I then put the sealed bag back into the original box date it and tape the lid. Works perfect. That way I know the original exp date. Ingredients and cooking instructions.

The large mouth one seals perfectly but often I and others have found the smaller lids don’t seal. So I heard a good prepped say to put two small lids on at the same time and the bottom one seals. So you could keep using the same top one I would think and use fresh ones on the bottom only.

I put the bands on my jars when I seal cereal/crackers too. I do this because once we open a jar and if we don't use all of the contents we have the band to secure the lid.

One thing I learned the hard way with store bought cookies/animal crackers/wheat thins, even if vacum sealing they dont last much longer past the due date, my 2 cents worth, so rotate your stock. As for your food saver breaking down, I either have better luck, or im not as hard core about it as you!! :)

With the ransomware attacks on businesses, having at least a 2 week supply of food is necessary.

At the VERY least. That should be the first goal but it should not stop there. People need to set their goals as large or small to suit them bu they should be working up to have at least a year or more. I believe we are at about three years now.

I say 2 years should be the goal. Get creative! If you can, start the garden. There is cooking from scratch, storing the ingredients that can last for years (wheat berries, oats, etc.). Water bath canning, pressure canning, dehydrating, freeze drying, vacuum sealing things, use oxygen absorbers as well. Many ways to get creative within your own budget bracket.

The 2 weeks I suggested was for beginners. Keep building your food supply. With attacks on infrastructure and other things, we WILL see a complete halt to our usual lives with no way to get to resources as we are used to.

I had problems with a particular brand of cereal getting bugs, But normally I don't have trouble. I do have to watch the tiny moths that come in in the summer if they can get in they will lay eggs on boxes and you end up with webworms in boxed or plastic bags of grains, nuts, and seeds. evil little wormies :) they also invade your closet to eat your natural fibers...

Ok I got on the rabbit trail from this video, watching all your granola and cracker videos. Oh, by the way, I frequently have hair envy watching your videos, lol, but I LOVE your hair in the berry almond episode 😁 so classy. ANYWAY, my question is tgis: if I want to make granola BARS for a grab n go morning, what do I do different other than obviously not stirring it halfway thru? Make it stickier? Maybe a smaller pan to make it thicker? Cooking time might be longer that way, I guess.

Maybe it is because we live in the deep south but, I vacuum sealed store brands of cereal about 19 months ago and it went rancid. We kept at 76 degrees and didn't store any with nuts . I really think it because of the oils
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead 3 жыл бұрын
I would say 76° is too warm for storing any kind of fat. Our pantry stays much cooler than that. I store nuts in jars plus many fats without issue of rancidity
